CHARACTER OF GOD

PURPOSE:

1. Not to give head knowledge of names and character of God but to increase closeness of relationship with Him

2. After studying names will be able to read scriptures and identify the different names and know the promises associated with each name are yours

3. Each of us have areas in our personalities that aren't complete -- areas where we feel something isn't quite righta. God foresaw damage Satan and sin would produce in our lives so He

created a plan to repair our fragmented personalitiesb. In His Word showed us pieces and parts of His total being by using many

names for Himself -- each one with its own meaning and abilityc. Every name fits like a replacement part into a broken personalityd. When we incorporate these individual parts into the broken, hurting places

in our lives, we become whole

ELOHIMGod of Power and Might

1. Occurs over 2500 times in Bible2. Name through which God reveals His power3. Made up of two parts - EL OHIM

a. EL = all powerful (power and might)b. OHIM = plural

4. Genesis 1:1 God = Elohima. Shows God's total power and ability to createb. Shows Trinity

1) Genesis 1:1 God the Father2) Genesis 1:2 God the Holy Spirit3) Colossians 1:16 God the Son, Jesus

5. Genesis 1:1 also shows God as creatora. Spoke the worlds into existence by faith

1) Faith is substance2) He created by faith, not out of nothing

JEHOVAHLord of Holiness

1. Comes from Hebrew word meaning "to live"a. Literally means to be fuel of life

2. Jehovah translated LORD (all capitols) in Bible3. Jehovah is a personal God

a. When Adam and Eve walked with God in the Garden of Eden, God was Elohim, not Jehovah to them

b. They didn't have a personal, intimate walk with Him4. Jehovah, the Revealing One

EL SHADDAIAll Sufficient God

1. First appears Genesis 17:1-2a. Translated God Almightyb. "God Almighty" not same as God of might and power (Elohim)c. God Almighty always relates to blessings and multiplication

1) John 10:10 - Jesus speaking of El Shaddai, the one who supplies an abundance of nourishment for body, soul and spirit

2. Name derived from Hebrew word meaning field as the field produces abundancea. Also translated breast or "the many breasted one" signifying nourishment and

productiveness3. El Shaddai - the one who is more than enough; the all sufficient one saying "I am more than

a. Abraham - Gen 17, 211) God showed self as the impossible God in giving Abraham son at age 992) Shows sufficiency by turning nature around and providing miracle

1) Genesis 28:1-3 - Isaac telling Jacob El Shaddai will work contrary to nature to overcome any different circumstances

a) When we get eyes on the circumstances, become defeated; need to keep eyes on God

1) Pride, greed, and lust are the things that snare a person and keeps him from walking with God and fulfilling His purpose in his life

a. El Shaddai can walk around total disasterb. Job lost everything - children, health, possessions, money - but he kept saying God is

more than enough (Hebrews 10:23)c. Staked a claim under the shadow of the Almightyd. Job was blessed doubly at the end of his trial because he held on to El Shaddai

1) 10 more children, lived 70 more years, had double wealth2) Had to hand on 9 months

1. Translated "Lord" (not capitalized) in Bible2. Elohim, Jehovah, El Shaddai - all relate to person of God

a. Adonai indicates our responsibility as His servantsb. Knowing Him as Adonai helps you make a deeper commitment to Him

3. Used over 300 times in Old Testament alone4. Literally means master, own Lord

a. Signifies ownership and our responsibility comes from being owned1) Redeemed by the blood of Jesus2) He purchased us

1. First found in Leviticus 20:7,8 2. Found over 700 times in Bible3. "God who sanctifies"4. Sets you apart by making your personality one with His5. Many Christians go through life not really knowing God's plan for them (God wants us to know

His plan - Eph 4:1)a. Walk aimlessly without getting involved in God's word, witnessing or becoming active

6. To sanctify - to become holy, to dedicate7. Jehovah M'Kaddesh is the Holy One who demands holiness from His children8. Leviticus 20:7 instructs people to sanctify themselves

a. Israelites in wilderness at Rephidim (Exodus 17:8)b. Amalek came to fight them

1) Amelek - grandson of Esau (Genesis 36:12)2) Amalekites first nation to appose Israel3) Were vicious4) Moses stood top of mountain. As long as held arms up, winning;

when dropped arms from tiredness Israelites losinga) This is an example of our standing in faithb) Sometimes we also need help to stand

5) Aaron and Hur held his arms up and Israelites victorious3. Banner in Moses' day = a bare pole with a bright, shining ornament that would

glitter in suna. When Moses held up arms at battle held up his rod (a symbol of God's

strengthc. When Joshua asked God why they lost, He revealed there was sin in the

campd. When the sin was taken care of and they got God's strategy, they

4. Psalms 103:1-35. Not only healing for self, but God wants us to lay hands on the sick so they will
