Our Policy & Research team have been active on a number of submissions, including a submission to the National Aviation and Tourism Policies, as well as on a number of other local issues. With the budget date set for October 15th, the Chamber has produced a strong submission document in advance of the budget, outlining the position of our members in Employment, Taxation and Support for SMEs, dealing with issues such as access to credit, peer to peer lending and prompt payment policies for SMEs, which will offer lifelines for businesses that rely on cash flow to continue.

We look forward to seeing our members at our next Cork Chamber’s Dublin Dinner on the 18th November at the Doubletree Hilton Hotel. Attended by over 500 Cork and Dublin companies, this event promotes the strong business connections between the two cities and offers premium corporate hospitality and networking opportunities. Cork Chamber launched its Pre Budget Submission 2015. The document covers a number of areas with a primary focus on innovative solutions which the Chamber believes will aid continued economic growth and job creation whilst fostering a positive environment for start-up enterprises and increasing consumer confidence.

Cork Chamber has called in this submission for initiatives that we feel will not only make it easier for those in business today to continue and grow but will also facilitate entrepreneurs to enter the market. Dealing specifically with issues like access to credit, our call for regulated peer to peer lending and prompt payment policies for SME’s will offer a vital lifeline to small and medium businesses that rely on cash flow to continue.

From a Cork and wider regional perspective we have also identified a number of key infrastructural projects such as the upgrade of the N28 to Ringaskiddy, which we have shown through our recent Indecon Economic Assessment has potential to deliver over 5,000 jobs by 2033. We also feel that the development and support of the Cork Science and Innovation Park will help the region to grow the knowledge economy that has the potential to deliver over 1,000 jobs and add upwards of €35million to the economy.

Monday 18th August marked Eugene Canavan’s first day of work after 4½ years of unemployment. The Carlow native had been unable to find a job after moving to Cork, despite over 11 years of experience in the hospitality sector.

Eugene attended our Jobseeker Support Programme which started on the 21st July last. This fully funded programme included 4 weeks of training, including a Certificate in Consultative Sales (FETAC Level 6), Career Coaching & Interview Skills, IT training and mock interviews. Eugene showed remarkable commitment to this programme, often arriving early to help set up the tea and coffee!

Norma Lynch, Business School Manager, had engaged with PJ Coogan’s Opinion Line on 96FM to do a Reality Radio slot where they followed Eugene’s progress through the Jobseeker Support Programme. Eugene spoke with PJ and elaborated on all that he had learnt during the programme and expressed his thanks to Cork Chamber and Skillnets Limited for the opportunity to engage with this programme.

After Eugene’s 4 weeks of training, he was fortunate enough to secure an interview with the newly reopened Kingsley Hotel. The interview went very well and Eugene landed the job of public areasofficerandstartedworkonthe18th August last! Eugene is loving his job and is delighted to be back in the industry that he knows so well.

Our next Jobseeker Support Programme started on the 15th September and we will be running another Programme later in the Autumn.

For further information about the Jobseeker Support Programme, please contact Aoife Dunne, Business School Executive at [email protected] or 021 4530141.

Why target India for opportunities in the energy and cleantech sectors?India is a land of opportunities for European clean technology businesses and researchers. The second biggest country, the largest democracy in the world, and with a growing young working population, India is a large and diverse market with many opportunities to be reaped. The country has consistently grown and offers a vast scope for the expansion of European technologies into new markets.

How can the Enterprise Europe Network help? One of the key roles of the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) is to assist local businesses to identify opportunities in new markets. The EEN’s main partner organisation in India is the European Business and Technology Centre (EBTC), whose mission is to assist the business, science and research communities - in Europe and India - to work together towards generating new business opportunities in clean technology transfer, and establishing business relevant cooperation in the field of research, science and technology.

In India, services are available for European businesses, researchers, clusters, and policy makers. EBTC’s toolbox of modular and customisable services supports EU-India cross-border collaboration and technology transfer. From helping you to understand the Indian market, finding projects and partners, establishing your organisation in India, localising your technology, making pilots happen, and more – every service takes European organisations a step further to enter and ensure sustainability in the vast Indian market.

Discover Energy & Cleantech Business Opportunities in IndiaOn Monday 13th October, EBTC’s Energy sector specialist Mr. Vittal Kumar Dhage will address Cork companies at an information seminar about business opportunities in India in sectors such as biotechnology, energy, environment and transport, which offer huge scope for synergy and collaboration. Vittal will also talk about market demand, opportunities and potential partnerships for Irish SMEs interested in these sectors in India.

For companies looking to make real contacts on the ground, the seminar will provide some background to the 2nd Global Innovation & Technology Alliance Platform at KNOWLEDGEXPO 2014 which is taking place in Delhi in November and is organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). This event provides an excellent platform to meet potential business partners and showcase Irish technologies in multiple sectors (e.g. energy, environment, transport, and much more).

Attendees will also have the opportunity for one-on-one meetings with the EBTC Energy sector specialist after the seminar, to ask any specific questions they might have about their own interests in the Indian market.

Speaker ProfileMr. Vittal Kumar Dhage is the resident Energy Sector Specialist at EBTC. He has over 15 years of diversified programme, consulting and technical experience in the energy and environment sectors including hands on intelligent and smarter solutions for green growth. Vittal has interdisciplinary policy and technical knowledge in energy efficiency, cleantechandrenewables, aswell as comprehensive clean technology transfer and market entry strategy formulation specialisation.

The lucky players at the Cork Chamber Golf Classic experienced the end of the “Indian Summer” at the Castlemartyr Golf Resort on Thursday 4th September. The sun shone all day as 40 teams played this stunning course to get their hands on the perpetual Golf Classic trophy!

A great day was had by all at the fourball scramble, with some fantastic scores in from the teams. The winning team was a mixed Cork Chamber team of Norman Coleman (Cola Design & Print), Aodh Bourke (ASA Marketing), Mark Scally (Hayfield Manor Hotel) and Andrew Kingston (GroupBooked) with a superb score of 50.4 on the day.

All players had an opportunity to play for a “Hole in One” on the 5th Hole, with a sleek Ford Ecosport up for grabs, courtesy of CAB Motor Group. Unfortunately no one won the car, but over €1400 was raised for Trócaire.

We’d like to thank our main sponsor (BAM Group Ireland) for their partnership of this event, which would not be possible without their support. We’d also like to thank all of our supporters, who provided a variety of supports such as prizes, refreshments, goody bag items and much more to help make the day the best Golf Classic to date!
