A Message from the President!

Dear Members:

Collaboration.

Webster's Dictionary defines it as: “The state of having shared interests or efforts, as in social or business matters.”

“The work and activity of a number of persons who individually contribute toward the efficiency of the whole.”

This is what the Rhinebeck Area Chamber of Commerce brings to you by way of providing marketing and networking

opportunities literally every day.

One such collaborative effort is the Chamber’s Visitor’s Guide & Membership Directory. With 7,000 printed and distrib-

uted annually, it exposes your business to a remarkably broad audience. Distribution occurs at local businesses, by mail, on

-line and at numerous events. Colleen’s commitment to getting our message out has brought her to travel shows including

the NY Times Travel Show and the Washington, DC Travel & Adventure Show. We are grateful for the time and energy

that Colleen brings to her position as the Executive Director and for her commitment to sharing our story.

Statistics from our website indicate that there are between 6,000 and 10,000 hits per month from viewers around the world.

Impressive and exciting! Your listing on the website is yet another example of the Chamber working with you to get your

message out.

With a diverse audience looking to visit and do business in the Rhinebeck area, we need to provide access to information

in a variety of platforms. The Visitor’s Guide and our website will meet the needs of many, and by reaching out through

Facebook we cast our net even further.

Check out our Facebook page to see who is checking us out. With summer right around the corner and a full calendar at

our local attractions, it is pretty remarkable to see who is posting on our FB page.

Please “LIKE” the Rhinebeck Area Chamber of Commerce on our FB page, and we encourage you to post your events/

business news on the page. Please keep in mind that we do confirm that the content is appropriate for our viewers.

The bottom line is ~ people want to come to the Hudson Valley and experience all that Rhinebeck and our surrounding

communities have to offer. By collaborating with your Chamber of Commerce, we’ll help you get the word out!

The Art of Networking.

So….there she was. A ten-year-old kid in a (somewhat nerdy) dress that looked like it came

from the set of Little House on the Prairie. With utter trepidation, she looked out at the sea of

graying Episcopalians and had no idea that the experience could define her entire career. It

was coffee hour, and it would be one of her greatest lessons in the art of networking.

Fast forward almost thirty years (not QUITE thirty, of course, but…well…almost). Thank-

fully, that little girl (me) has traded in the Laura Ingalls outfits for a few power suits (despite

the fact that she never grew a whole lot more in that time, at least not vertically) – but she

hasn’t forgotten the networking skills she developed in 1985 as the eldest daughter of

Rhinebeck’s new Episcopal minister.

Indeed, I never realized that learning how to converse with people from all walks of life, our

very congregation at Church of the Messiah, would provide so much insight to me today. The

art of networking lies in the ability to connect with other human beings in such a way that

sustainable relationships built on trust and loyalty develop. As a preacher’s kid, I had to learn

how to strike up conversation, often with someone much older than me, or more educated, or

wealthier, or more wordly, just as we all do every day in our work lives. I had to learn how to

walk into a room and embrace the opportunity to learn something from the people in my

presence; how to listen and how to engage in a conversation based upon the concept of

reciprocity. My mom and dad were brilliant at this, and I am yet still learning, as we all are,

how to build strong relationships with other human beings. However, I think the take-away

lessons of coffee hour for a preacher’s kid translate into successful networking practices for

the modern-day businessperson:

1. Make eye contact and let the person in front of you know that you are truly interested in

what he or she has to share with you. Learn from that person. Enjoy the chance to discover

something new with total authenticity.

2. When you see that person again, ask a question which builds on the last dialogue you

enjoyed with him or her. How was that trip to California? How is your mom doing following

her surgery? How do you like the new job you started when I last saw you?

Stay in touch. Take the person for a coffee. Drop by with flowers or a box of chocolates.

Send a card (that’s right; a hand-written one!). Keep growing the relationship.

I believe that if we all apply those three basic steps to our networking efforts on a regular ba-

sis, not only will our businesses and spheres of influence grow, but so too will our sense of

fulfillment and joy as we forge new friendships with incredible people right in our midst.
