Welcome!

The Sun Prairie Area School District is pleased to offer Summer School Enrichment courses for students currently in Grades 4K – 4. Students whose homeschool is C.H. Bird, Eastside, or Northside will register for classes at the C.H. Bird location. Registration for Enrichment Courses featured in this course guide will begin at 8:00 am on April 15 – April 29, 2013. Registration will be done online at: http://www.sunprairie.k12.wi.us/ss_information.cfm If you do not have access to a computer or would like some help with registration, computer access is available at your neighborhood school, the district office, or the public library. Now is the time to look through this guide and check out the great courses being offered this summer.

Key Information

• When registering for classes, please use your current year grade.

• Transportation is based on each student’s home address. To be eligible for transportation, a student must live more than one mile from the summer school location. Transportation must be requested at the time of registration.

• Breakfast will be available at 8:00 am for students attending the 8:40 am class.

Grades 3-4 8:40 – 10:10 am 10:25 – 11:55 am Fee: $10.00 Description: In this class you will perform different science experiments including making gak, parachute people, volcanoes, fossils, crayons, bottle divers, tie dye, fountains, towers, and boats. You will receive copies of all of the instructions on the last day of class so you can do these experiments at home. If you are interested in science and want to try new things, this class is for you!

Grades K-2 10:25 – 11:55 am Fee: $15.00 Description: You will explore art from different countries while learning about many artistic styles and techniques from various parts of the world. Some of the projects you will make include mask making, calligraphy, bark painting, plate and spoon art, and making musical instruments.

As a student writer, you will be inspired by the works of Ezra Jack Keats, Steve Jenkins, and Lois Ehlert. You will create your own stories and collage art similar to the authors’ style.

Grades 2-4 8:40 – 10:10 am 10:25 – 11:55 am Fee: $0 Description: Ballet is one of the most beautiful forms of dance. Come take a ballet class that teaches you the basics of classical ballet including the history of ballet, French ballet vocabulary, and basic ballet positions through stories, games, and engaging activities!

The building block progression for balance, mobility, strength, and power will complement fun and active physical activities designed to incorporate 3rd and 4th grade literacy and math concepts.

Would you like to learn how to find these sites and how to better use them? If you answered YES and would like to make new friends while using computer technology then this is the class for you!

Grades K-1 10:25 – 11:55 am Fee: $15.00 Description: Learn basic kitchen safety and how to use cooking equipment all while channeling the creative chef inside of you! Join the fun in the kitchen as you learn how to read recipes, use kitchen math, and create recipes of your own.

Grades K-1 8:40 – 10:10 am 10:25 – 11:55 am Fee: $10.00 Description: In this course, you will experience unique Chinese culture such as Chinese calligraphy, paper cutting, and character writing. You will also learn basic Chinese phrases and sentences from Chinese children’s song and games.

Grades 2-4 8:40 – 10:10 am 10:25 – 11:55 am Fee: $6.00 Description: Dream Journal is a mix of personal narratives, creative writing, and journaling. In this course, you will brainstorm, write, and share about your past, present, and future. Through this experience, you will become excited about writing as you realize writing is a terrific way to express yourself, share your opinions, bring your ideas to life, and document the many dreams and goals you have for your future.

Grades K-2 8:40 – 10:10 am Fee: $5.00 Description: Examine and explore fascinating facts about the human body to promote lifelong health and fitness. You will participate in hands on experiments and demonstrations using models of skeletons, brain, heart, muscle, lungs, and human torso along with stethoscopes, heart rate monitors and microscopes. You will also be able to explore literature and internet resources to find answers to questions you have about the body.

Grades 1-3 8:40 – 10:10 am 10:25 – 11:55 am Fee: $5.00 Description: Reading brings forth so many different adventures that you can’t necessarily have in real life! You will explore with the characters in the Magic Tree House as they go on adventures. Research and discuss the facts learned from these adventures and connect them to social studies and science! You will enrich your reading comprehension in this “book club” class!

This course will focus on the nervous, sensory, skeletal, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, and immune systems in regard to harmful effects of tobacco use and poor nutrition. It also focuses on the benefits of exercise and other healthy habits.

You will play games, sing songs, and watch great DVDs to learn how to communicate using your hands. Learn about Deaf Culture, hearing loss, and how you hear. If you've taken the class before, come and learn some new things and make new projects. You will get a booklet of signs and will make a special project with your name using signs. Don't just say it, Sign it!

Grades 1-2 8:40 – 10:10 am or 10:25 – 11:55 am Fee: $5.00 Description: Math is everywhere! Even in storybooks. You will use books to jumpstart your adventures into the world of math. From Fibonacci bracelets to Skittles measurements you will use basic mathematical skills in a fun way. You'll play math games and apply addition, subtraction, and probability in your activities.

Grades 3-4 10:25 – 11:55 am No Fee Description: NXT Advance Lego Robotics is for 3rd and 4th grade students who want experience robot design and programming. NXT Legos use an on board computer, up to 3 motors, gears, belts, beams, bricks, and 4 sensors, to create amazing robots. You will learn how to build 1 robot together, then you will design, build, and program another unique robot.

Grade 4K 8:40 – 10:10 am or 10:25 – 11:55 am Fee: $10.00 Description: Each week you will focus on a different camping critter (ex. fish, bugs) in order to learn the alphabet, letter sounds, numbers, and some hands-on science. The daily routine includes a story time, a directed reading or math activity, a music/game time, and a free choice center activity. Note: This course runs six weeks (June 17 – July 25)

The choice of books and materials you use will help you find meaning in print. Non-fiction books of your choice and interests will also be explored. You will make fun projects and will take time to practice reading stories in comics, graphic novel books, magazines and newspapers in formats for kids.

Grades K-2 8:40 – 10:10 am No Fee Description: WEDO Lego Robotics is for our youngest engineers. As a Kindergarten, 1st, or 2nd grade student, you will learn about building and design, motors and gears, and computer programming. You will work through a series of Lego Robot plans, then design and build an unique Lego robot of your own.

Grades K-1 8:40 – 10:10 am or 10:25 – 11:55 am Fee: $10.00 Description: You will study Eric Carle books such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Grouchy Ladybug, The Very Busy Spider and learn about the science behind the insects in the books! There will be many fun craft projects to go with the bugs in the books. It will be a creepy crafty crawly good time!

Grades K-2 8:40 – 10:10 am or 10:25 – 11:55 am Fee: $5.00 Description: Would you like to spend more time exploring the fun and educational websites that are used in our schools? Practice various leadership skills through fun and engaging activities. Learn how to put your fantastic ideas into reality by planning and developing a project. Have fun discussing important topics with other student leaders!

Grades 2-3 8:40 – 10:10 am or 10:25 – 11:55 am Fee: $10.00 Description: Explore the oceans of the world through books and experiments. You will read about various ocean animals and create a 3D model. You will research salt water vs. fresh water. Our biome study of the ocean will include various experiments and craft projects to enhance your ocean exploration.

This summer session will emphasize knowledge and skills for a lifetime of physical fitness. You will participate in independent and team activities including: sport stacking, noodle mania, spooner boards, curolling, floorball, and much more.
