Interim Head of School Sue Baldwin.A record 930 girls made the 2011–12 school year one to remember!

Upper School Chinese teacher Yun Zhu received her Ph.D. from the VCU School of Education in December. Her dissertation was the impact of faculty-student interactions on student learning and multicultural perceptions.

50 pieces of art created by St. Catherine’s students and faculty were featured by the Billboard Art Project on Interstate 95.

Two Saints field hockey players were among 16 athletes nationwide to earn All-American status for the sport.

Four Upper School students selected to participate in the Summer Residential Governor’s School programs in Math, Science and Technology; Humanities; French and Engineering.

29 faculty and staff members presented at 29 different local, regional and national workshops and conferences.

One Upper School student named to the All-State Orchestra. Three Upper School students earned a spot in the Senior Regional Orchestra.

On September 9, more than 700 members of the St. Catherine’s community joined together on the Green in celebration of our students and the future of our School. A 90-foot banner featured photos of all students.

Upper School faculty member Nicole Hood conducted two Lunch and Learn series events at the VMFA. Her lectures on Jacob Lawrence and Elizabeth Catlett were received by sold out crowds.

Six Upper School students attended the James River Writers Conference and interacted with authors from around the nation.

More than 350 alumnae attended

2012 Reunion Events.

St. Catherine’s girls consistently outscore national averages on SATs and ACTs (2011 averages)• 137 points above national averages for writing SAT• 115 points above national averages for critical reading SAT• 98 points above national averages for math SAT• 4.8 points above national average on ACT (scale is 1–36)

Two Middle School students performed before a sold out audience in Carnegie Hall with the American Youth Harp Ensemble.

Seven Upper School students engaged with students

across the nation at the NAIS People of Color

Conference in Philadelphia.

Another stellar year of 100% Annual Fund participation from the faculty and staff, Board of Governors, Foundation Board, Ellett Board and Richmond Chapter.

One Saints golfer and the only female in the tournament qualified for the VISAA Division I state tournament.

Tyler Bird Paul ’77 personifies the School Motto What we keep, we lose; only what we give remains our own. As archivist, she lovingly maintained and documented the School’s 122-year history, and answered thousands of requests. She also served as school historian for Lower School classes, tour guide for student pilgrimages to Miss Jennie’s grave, and hosted annual luncheons honoring retired faculty and staff. On the switchboard, her soft voice and sweet smile welcomed countless callers and visitors.

10 Middle School girls took a missions trip to partner school Saint Esteban in San Pedro, Dominican Republic, built them a computer lab and formed friendships to last a lifetime.

100 boxes packaged by Middle School girls for troops in Afghanistan.

The entire Upper School joined together to pack more than 50,000 meals for Stop Hunger Now.

Twenty students performed in the 2011 Richmond Ballet production of the Nutcracker, including one in the staring role of Clara. Four St. Catherine’s Middle Schoolers performed as part of the Richmond Ballet’s production of “Coppelia.”

Four seniors performed a segment of their senior dance live on WTVR Channel 6.

Middle School students held a walk-a-thon to raise $3,248 for ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation in honor of second grader Charlotte Baxter.

41 students from Wuhan School in China visited the Lower School for a cultural exchange that ended with a dragon parade on the Green.

presented $1,124,239 to the School.

Saints athletes achieved 66 all-state and 75 all-LIS honors. 25 girls were named all-metro for their respective sports by the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

This past February, six individuals and one team were inducted as the inaugural class of the St. Catherine’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

St. Catherine’s and St. Christopher’s Upper School students received the Youth Philanthropist of the Year Award by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Central Virginia Chapter.

Lower School students collected art supplies and materials to fill 30 bags for students at St. Andrew’s School to enjoy over the summer months.

One gold key, four silver keys and two honorable mentions awarded to Upper School girls in the National Scholastic Art and Writing competition.

Music in the Parks Festival at Busch Gardens awarded our Lower School Choir a superior rating, first place trophy and the Best Overall Elementary School Choir.

One middle schooler was among a group of local children selected to sing with Grammy winner Jason Mraz at a SPARC benefit concert.

134 girls took 283 Advanced Placement Exams this year.

St. Catherine’s admissions advertising campaign won two national awards: • GrandAwardwinnerforCouncil for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District III, beating out prestigious colleges. • AssociationofEducationalPublishers Beacon Award, beating out PBS.

One Senior was named a National Achievement Scholarship Recipient.

Middle School students collected 2,350 pounds of food for Central Virginia Foodbank.

ExxonMobil gave St. Catherine’s grants for $7,000 to use for a science and math initiative.

Upper School students raised $10,000 for our partner school in Haiti through the Hustlin’ for Haiti dance event.

7 student-athletes will compete next year in college athletics at Amherst, Duke (2), Randolph-Macon, Sewanee, Wake Forest, William & Mary.

3 student-artists will continue at top-ranked art schools: Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) & VCU School of the Arts (2).

hurricane rattled her for the opening of school. Her

grace and professionalism is evident in everything

she does. Sue leads with the perfect blend of sound

decision making, strong conviction to do the right

thing, and a deep passion for the education of

girls. The community of St. Catherine’s is forever
