A Note from the Playhouse - Member Supported Theatre

The Boards of Pickwick Players and Coronado Playhouse are very excited about this amazing partnership of two San Diego community theatres to bring you A Year With Frog and Toad! While many of the individual talents have played at both theatres, our mutual production is something new and has been an enriching experience.Coronado Playhouse is moving towards its 70th year. In contrast, Pickwick Players is a relatively new theatre company, yet we share many goals and a basic mission to provide an outlet for creative community involvement, while seeking to produce quality entertainment. A big part of that are the creating, acting and technical aspects of producing and directing shows, which is a most rewarding element. We are fortunate to see community spirit come together every day in community theatre. For example, Barron Henzel designed the impressive and challenging set you are about to see which required many hands to make. It was heartfelt when the crews started to arrive after a couple calls and emails! It is extremely satisfying to see the bonds made with each production. It strengthens our communities and human compassion.Fundraising is a hard part of each production but crucial for every show in community theaters. We continue

to keep ticket prices at an accessible level to attain the largest reach in San Diego for live theatre. We need your help to keep treasured shows such as A Year With Frog and Toad in our seasons. We try to make fundraising a little different for each show, so for this one we are happy to offer Frog & Toad Fun Packages to enhance your child’s experience, an opportunity drawing for a very large stuffed frog, and small plush swap creatures, all for a minimal donation cost. If you are able to increase your support, another great way is to become a sponsor member; you can see the levels in the program insert. All donations benefit both theatres and help in the larger costs such as the set, costumes, and our 7-piece band!Coronado Playhouse and Pickwick Players are both all-volunteer, non-profit theatres sharing with you this experience of live theatre through this classic favorite. We truly hope you, your friends, and, your families enjoy our production of A Year With Frog and Toad, even though Toad is a little grumpy.Katy Skyrud Managing Director Coronado Playhouse Jennie Gray Connard Board President Pickwick Players

The story of A Year With Frog and Toad begins in 1970, when Arnold Lobel’s classic book Frog and Toad are Friends was first published. Lobel received a Caldecott Honor award, and went on to publish three additional volumes of Frog and Toad adventures. In 2002, Adrianne Lobel, the author’s daughter, commissioned a musical based on her father’s most beloved characters.A Year With Frog and Toad was written by brothers Robert and Willie Reale, based on all four books in Lobel’s Frog and Toad series. Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis first produced the musical in 2002. It next opened Off-Broadway at The New Victory Theater. After stellar reviews and a sold-out run, the show transferred to Broadway, where it opened at the Cort Theatre in 2003. The show broke new ground by bringing professional children’s theatre to Broadway, sparking the interest of the age 3 to 12 set. A Year With

Frog and Toad was nominated for three ToNY Awards including “Best Musical,” “Best Book of a Musical,” and “Best original Score”.I had the great pleasure of directing Coronado Playhouse’s Young Audience’s production of Sleeping Beauty or the Famous Rose Taboo last summer, as well as Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella in 2010. It is always such a joy seeing the excitement in the eyes of children and watching them respond with laughter, awe, and applause. When Coronado Playhouse and Pickwick Players were looking at presenting a co-production of A Year With Frog and Toad, I jumped, or should I say hopped, at the chance to direct. Though I had never read the books prior, I had heard the jazzy upbeat music, which is filled with so much melody and wit, and I was excited to read the script. I feel it has the charm, innocence, and pure entertainment that I believe audiences of all ages enjoy. It is the perfect show for the entire family: the young and young at heart. our production’s creative team, cast, designers, crew, and musicians are outstanding, and they all need to be recognized. I truly thank all of them for their professionalism, expertise, and hard work. So, whether you have read the books and loved them, or you are experiencing these spirited swamp friends for the first time, may the musical magic of A Year With Frog and Toad awaken fond memories from hibernation, or create a few new ones.

Director’s Notes
