A Note from the Playhouse - Member Supported Theatre

At Coronado Playhouse, anything is possible!Small has always been big in the world of Dr. Seuss, and there are always so many things you can think! “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” At Coronado Playhouse, that message is in everything we teach and promote to all who pass through our doors. We embrace our community in all that it is, and show-off our community with all its vast talents.Seussical is woven together using many of Dr. Seuss books and feature characters and scenarios from all. Songs do much of the storytelling in Seussical The Musical and we are especially proud to showcase powerhouse singers from our CPH family and equally fortunate to have attracted 14 new singers and dancers to our stage in this whimsical Seuss tale.We also welcome a new director, choreographer and set designer to our family, and we hope you notice and enjoy the advanced technical aspect brought to

you by hours of hard work by our Seussical team. The Coronado Playhouse Board is committed to including a youth production in each season to reach out to our younger audience and those young at heart. We do our best to make them family-friendly with earlier show times, more matinees and keeping prices affordable. We support our community and we ask you to support us by spreading the word, that Dr. Seuss is in the House. Sit back and relax and discover all the places you’ll go.Katy Skyrud Managing Director Coronado Playhouse

In 1957 a revolution occurred. It was a revolution that changed the way that children learned how to read. Fed up with the ineffectiveness of first and second grade primers like Dick and Jane which, according to journalist John Hersey, featured “abnormally courteous, unnaturally clean boys and girls” and “insipid illustrations”, publisher William Spaulding challenged author and artist Ted Geisel to “write me a story that first-graders can’t put down!”. The result? The Cat in the Hat, a story whose plot centers around a sly, lanky, con-man of a feline whose promise of “lots of good fun that is funny” both entertains and alarms the children he encounters. Once published, the book flew off the shelves and was hailed as an exciting way to learn to read. The book led directly to the creation of Beginner Books, a publishing house whose titles included Green Eggs, and Ham, Are You My Mother?, Oh, The Thinks You Can Think!, and Go Dog Go! and put Ted Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, squarely

on the map as a pioneer of children’s literature. Now, the ubiquitous Cat with his signature Hat is as recognizable as any American icon and the good doctor’s words of wisdom and whimsy march through our brains like rhyming soldiers.“A person’s a person no matter how small”Small has always been big in the world of Dr. Seuss, where the battles fought by underdogs, outcasts and freethinkers are championed in squiggly line and rhythmic rhyme. Thus, our hero begins their journey as a kid, complete with kid-trust, kid-fears, and kid-rules. Dr. Seuss understood how important it was for children to be the warriors of their own stories; their decisions have power, their actions have consequences, their existence matters. In this way,

the Seussian kid-hero is all of us, regardless of age. We celebrate Jojo’s imagination, we defend Horton’s loyalty, we empathize with Gertrude’s insecurity, and we breathe huge sighs of relief when the Whos’ existence is vindicated in the end. As Horton and Jojo sing about their need for “one small voice in the universe, one true friend in the universe, who believes in me,” they are speaking for all the kids — big and small — who have longed for a sympathetic ear when times get tough. This is a show that celebrates friendship and community as much as the power of the individual imagination, and proves that those qualities are not mutually exclusive. This is particularly truthful of this show: I am honored and humbled to be surrounded by a group of artists whose imaginations and talents are unparalleled only by their dedication to this show and its success. They love what they do, they love each other, and they love the importance of the Arts in children’s lives. As Dr. Seuss so prophetically writes, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
