The Arts team put on a brilliant Variety Night with the dance drama and musical performances by year eights, nines and tens. They performed to packed out audiences and had to turn people away who had not booked due to lack of room. There was a good transfer of skills and knowledge from the mentoring of older students and it was great to see former Arts students in the audience like Montana and Aeyeisha.

Principals Report

Last week along with Kerrie Mansell, the Head of Humanities, I presented the case for demonstrating to a panel that Cecil Andrews SHS is ready to become an Independent Public School (IPS). I acknowledge Kerrie for her vision, dedication, passion for the students and very effective communication skills. We will know towards the end of July if we were successful. We look forward to managing the affairs of the School and determining our destiny together as a community. The increased autonomy and flexibility will enable us to more imaginatively and flexibly meet students’ needs, channelling resources to where they are needed and

achieving improved student outcomes.

Nathan Morton a valued member of our School Council and a previous Deputy Principal at the School had the

following to say:

“I believe Cecil Andrews Senior High School’s decision to become an Independent Public School will allow the school to further entrench its connection with Seville Grove and the wider Armadale community by delivering better educational outcomes to its students. This will allow the local community, who know the school best, to control their own destiny. As a former Teacher at the School, I appreciate the greater authority and autonomy this will offer the Principals over their school’s budget, the teachers they employ and how they teach the local

students. “

We are very excited by the very successful excursion to Melbourne of our AFL and Arts students. We wish to thank the staff who worked hard, planned, organised and took such great care of the 40 students who went on the trip, providing them with a once in a lifetime experience. The students came back raving about how much they learned and grew together. There was a fusion of football and theatre with the exchange of talent and skills preparing our students better for the future and giving them an enhanced appreciation of sports and

culture.

We wish to thank the following staff from our two flagship specialist programs, AFL and Performing Arts; Jeremy

Bruse, Glen Myles, Sharlene Cuellar and Austin Ward. They are amazing teachers!

Our students conducted themselves very well in the recent Lightning Carnival. Thanks to Brian Kazakoff and the

team for an excellent effort. Our students always demonstrate good sportsmanship.

The Arts team put on a brilliant Variety Night with the dance drama and musical performances by year eights, nines and tens. They performed to packed out audiences and had to turn people away who had not booked due to lack of room. There was a good transfer of skills and knowledge from the mentoring of older students and it

was great to see former Arts students in the audience like Montana and Aeyeisha.

Find a Cure

In conjunction with and support of the Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation and ‘Keep The Flame Alive 2014’, Steph Sexton, a former Shenton College student working in Los Angeles, has written and produced “Find a Cure”, a music video in which Hollywood celebrities from film, T.V., dance and music performed. This video was created to be an uplifting experience for people and their loved ones, especially children, who are facing pain and suffering through some kind of illness. It is to honour their struggle and to give them hope in finding a cure. All the backdrop visuals were sent in from around the world in this celebration of hope. Copy and paste the link below into your

browser to watch ‘Find a Cure’.

NAPLAN Testing NAPLAN Testing NAPLAN Testing NAPLAN Testing –––– Year 9Year 9Year 9Year 9

On Tuesday 13, Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 May, students in Years 9 took part in the National

Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy, or NAPLAN, as it is commonly known.

Reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy were tested. These tests were

done at the school as part of the curriculum.

NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test. It just looks at what level students are achieving in literacy and

numeracy against National Standards and students throughout Australia.

Later in the year parents will be sent an individual student NAPLAN report that can be used to view

and monitor how your child is progressing.

If you would like further information please contact Donna Paice.

Homework ClubHomework ClubHomework ClubHomework Club

Homework club operates at the school for an hour after school on Tuesday and Wednesday in the library. Students can receive help for any of their subjects. On Thursday the Maths Department runs a homework club

specifically for Maths. Afternoon tea is provided to students who attend Homework club.

What are students saying about homework club?

Homework club is very helpful for multiple things. There are nice teachers available to help you, you can read the library’s books and healthy snacks are provided. If you attend regularly you will received ViVo points. You can also use the school computers, which is really useful because you can access school work that you can’t access from home. On Thursday there is a homework club devoted to Mathematics and you have teachers there

that work in the maths department.

YourTutor: An Online resource for our Students’ LearningYourTutor: An Online resource for our Students’ LearningYourTutor: An Online resource for our Students’ LearningYourTutor: An Online resource for our Students’ Learning

Our students are very fortunate to have free access to the YourTutor program. This program is generously funded by Edith Cowan University for the benefit of our students. YourTutor provides a comprehensive set of skill builder activities for students in all year groups in Maths, English and Science. Students can also

communicate directly with a tutor who can assist them with any of their subjects.

One parent recently said, “she loves the online tutor. It helps a lot with her maths.”

All students received their log on details earlier this year. Any student who requires a log on can see Mrs Paice.

LOWES

Bomber jackets will arrive at the beginning of Term 3 at Lowes ranging in sizes 6-34. The uniform committee have viewed the garment along with Lowes schools coordinator Stephen McNally. The jacket is fully lined for warmth and is durable, it is made from an anti-pilling fabric and requires hand or gentle machine washing to maintain a long life. The price of $69 provides excellent affordability for

a garment that should last many years.

Please refer to Lowes website to get www.lowes.com.au to gather the washing and care instructions

for the uniforms.

Blue tights are now available they are $6.50 a pair.

A selection of uniform items are on display in the front office at Cecil Andrews.

Thank you to Mrs Sharlene Cuellar and Mr Philip Hulbert

for modelling the new Bomber Jacket for us.

Follow the Dream

Are you the parent of an Indigenous student, who attends school at least 90% of the time and is achieving passing grades in all core subjects? Do you want your child to have many great opportunities? Opportunities for university camps both here and interstate, the opportunity to participate in culture based and leadership building camps, here and interstate. Would you like your child to be able to access tutoring up to eight hours a week? Are you a parent who works hard to help your child achieve success? Are you willing to work with the school to help your child be the best they can be? Do you have a dream for your child and are working hard to help them achieve it? If the answer to all of these questions

is yes, then Follow the Dream needs you.

Follow the Dream is a program for Indigenous students who aspire to achieve year 12 graduation

and then go on to further education or training.

The program works with students from five local schools and has had a long history of success, ranging from students studying medicine and nursing, architecture and engineering, criminology and forensics, electricians, business trainees or even an AFL footballer. The program helps your child be prepared for the future, assistswith resumes, job applications, university and TAFE applications, scholarship applications and introductions to key staff at university for those

students wishing to pursue that avenue.

Another great aspect of Follow the Dream is the network building, having the opportunity to work

with other like-minded students who all want a successful future, from this school and others.

Life long friendships are formed.

If you meet the criteria and would like your child to participate in the program please call Jo

Warren on 94970246 or email [email protected]

ABORIGINAL AND ISLANDER EDUCATION OFFICERS

My name is Linda Little and my colleague, Norm Gardner, and I are the Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers (AEIO) at Cecil Andrews SHS. Our job involves us in supporting students in classrooms, attend meetings to develop individual attendance plans, monitor student attendance, and participate in case conference meetings and organising and running programs designed to support students. We also organise reward luncheons for students who has 80 to 100% attendance

for the term.

We encourage you to contact us if you want to discuss your child’s progress at our school or you have

any issues or concerns about your child’s education.

There are a number of great things happening for the students at CASHS;

The Clontarf Academy has opened at Cecil Andrews SHS to provide support to the male indigenous

students who choose to be part of the program.

To support the indigenous girls we have started a Netball Program and a Beauty and Modelling

program for next term.

The school has continued to run Aboriginal Studies for all the year 8 students to encourage a greater

knowledge and understanding of Noongar culture.

Norm and I are currently organising a Parents/Guardians forum to see what we can do with our students and what the community would like us to do. If you would like to be part of the forum or have any positive suggestions to help us in the organisation of the forum please contact at Cecil Andrews

on 94970200 during normal school hours.

CASHS Clontarf Academy

The Clontarf Academy has received a warm welcome from the school community and is very

pleased to be working in partnership with Cecil Andrews Senior High School.

The Clontarf Foundation exists to improve the education, discipline, self-esteem and life skills of young indigenous men

and by doing so equips them to participate more meaningfully in society.

Using the passion that Aboriginal boys have for Aussie Rules allows Clontarf to attract boys to school but it is not a sporting program. The program is focussed on encouraging behavioural change, developing positive attitudes, assisting

students to complete school and secure employment.

The program has hit the ground running, engaging boys in a variety of camps, games and other activities.

Early morning training has been a constant with each academy sine the first academy started in 2000. Morning training is not so much about developing the boys’ football skills. It is more about developing a good structure in the boy’s lives. Getting them to understand that a good night sleep is needed, especially the night before training. Once in the working environment after leaving school early mornings are a part of every person’s life and this just helps them to understand that and to develop a consistent pattern. Morning training is about teaching a healthy lifestyle and a bit of morning fitness and a good meal afterwards and is a great way to start the day. As the term has progressed the boys have been slowly getting used to the 6am pickups from Karl and Dale, with most of them up and ready to go when they hear the beep of the

horn.

As well as early morning training and breakfast program twice a week, other Clontarf activities have included:

Katanning Basketball Challenge (Week 2)

CASHS Clontarf Academy vs Gilmore Clontarf Academy (Week 3)

Year 8 and 9 Overnight Camp (Week 4)

CASHS Academy vs Yule Brook Clontarf Academy (Week 5)

Year 8 Garden Project

During the year 8 garden program the boys have been involved in the initial planning on the nature garden just outside our academy room. From digging up old soil to planting new plants we hope the garden will be a place where the boys can

gather around and something for them to be proud of.

The year 9 Cooking classes started off in a really positive way last week where the boys planned and cooked a lunch for some parents of students. The boys in their groups worked well as a team and produced a good meal which was enjoyed by all. Coming up will be another lunch where the boys have been asked to invite a teacher and the following week will see

a couple of celebrity chefs from the Clontarf Foundations head office to cook with the boys for the whole Academy.

Upcoming Games for Term 2

CASHS Clontarf Academy vs Girrawheen Clontarf Academy (Week 8)

Bunbury Indoor Cricket carnival (Week 8)

CASHS Clontarf Academy vs Staff and Parents (Week 10)

Chaplain’s Report

Breakfast Program: Breakfast Program is still running: Wednesday – Friday at 8am for students who would like some breakfast in the

morning! We are looking for some amazing volunteers who would like to be a part of this.

Please contact the school if this is something you are interested in helping out with.

Spectrum: Spectrum is the High School stage of Rainbows.

If your child has experienced or is currently experiencing a hard situation in their life, they might like to consider joining this Rainbows

support group.

Young adults need a chance to express their feelings, positive and negative. Yet, they may be too unsure of themselves to take the risk. Like adults, they fear rejection or lack of understanding. Spectrum provides the opportunity for teens to be with others their age who are

walking the same journey.

Adolescents face many difficult obstacles as they begin to learn their place in the world. For many teens, one of the most distressing

challenges can be changes that occur in their families through death, divorce, or other painful transitions.

Sensitive, caring, trained adults act as Facilitators who help teens put their feelings into words, work through their grief, build a stronger

sense of self-esteem and to begin to accept what has taken place.

Spectrum Groups help teens share feelings and thoughts about their loss with others their own age. Conversations are kept

confidential.

Lifegroup: This is a lunch-time program designed for students who want to simply hang out in a safe and friendly environment. Led by local youth leader Nathan Wraight from Champion Lakes Christian Church, lifegroup is designed to help grow and train Christian students in their

faith but all are welcome! There will be deep discussions, games and more!

Every Friday lunch time in the Common Room or B3.

See the chaplain for more information!

Other Programs:

Imagine Me: is currently running, with two year 9 groups.

This program is designed to promote and foster girls’ self-esteem and sense of self-worth through in-depth discussions and entertaining activities. The 7 week program focuses on 6 different aspects of life, including identity, friendships, body image, dreams, health and

fitness and choices.

If this is something that you think your teenage girl would benefit from contact the chaplain [this is a year 9 program].

Courageous Is a program designed to promote and foster boys‟ self-esteem and sense of self-worth through in-depth discussions and

entertaining activities. The 7 week program focuses on 7 different aspects of a man’s life, including dealing with feelings, self-esteem,

grief and loss, anger, fear and worry, leadership and boundaries.

This program is organised to be running by next term.

The Duke of Edinburgh The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is the world’s leading achievement award for young people. It is voluntary, non-

competitive and available to anyone ages 14-25.

Year 9s and 10s have had an information session on this, and are encouraged to consider this amazing opportunity. The award

contributes to your WACE points.

If you would like more information, or if you require a registration form, please see the chaplain or Dara O'Donoghue.
