The only thing that stands between a man and what he really wants from life is often merely the will to try it and the faith to believe that it is possible. -Richard DeVos

CedricGttmann

Cedric Gttmann

Background & Personal statement: My name is Cedric Gttmann and I am originally from Jacksonville Florida. Growing up I was always that kid who was drawing in class instead of doing his work. Art, PE, and lunch were continuously my best subjects and as far back as I can remember my mind seemed to work a little different than my friends. When they would see a building, some architecture, a product, a car, or something like that they would comment on how cool it was or how much they liked it but, my first thought was always, I would have did it like this. I think my innovative and inquisitive mentality has steered me toward my goals and I have always felt in my heart that a career in design would bring me the most satisfaction. Shoes, sneakers, and footwear have always been important to me and they were probably the first product I actually dissected to the fun-damental core, studied it, and learned to appreciate the subtle intricacies of the design. When I was about 17 I realized that footwear was something I would love to do for a career. I had no idea what was required to become a footwear designer or how to even go about it but with blind faith and ambition I decided to take a journey. When I was 18 I saved up some money, bought a plane ticket, and flew to Portland, Oregon. When I got off the plane I took a cab to the Adidas headquarters, I snuck in the building, ran up a flight of stairs to the receptionist desk, and proceeded to show her my sneaker designs and told her all about how I wanted to be a shoe designer. Needless to say I didnt get offered a job but, she did go get a designer who I spoke with and who explained to me a degree was needed for that position. He also had me sign a contract explaining that he would take my designs but, I could not sue Adidas if they used any of my ideas. I was young and naive so, I signed it and flew back home to Florida. After that, life happened. I rekindled my relationship with my high school sweetheart and we had a beautiful baby girl. I worked in swimming pool construction and did odd jobs for 10 + years to take care of my family. Finally, after the housing market crashed, new homes w/pools were not being built as frequently, and I couldnt make enough money to support us I realized that if I ever wanted to be truly happy and provide the type of life my family deserves then I needed to take a big leap of faith and do like I did when I was 18 and go chase my dreams! Luckily my family supported my ridiculous proposition and 4 years ago my fianc Janae, our daughter Ayannah and myself sold everything we owned, packed up the truck, and drove across the country so that I could pursue my dream of becoming a product/footwear designer. It was hard starting our lives completely over but, it has also been an adventure worth having. Since I have been in Oregon I have attained my Associates Degree, I attended Pensole Footwear Design Academy and this past July I transferred from Clackamas Community College in the Portland area to the University of Oregon. Once again we had to pack up and start our lives over in a new location. Each time we move it is a big risk because we have to start from scratch, I have to find a new job, go without pay checks, find a home for us, and get my daughter enrolled in a new school but, I wouldnt trade it for the world because with each move I get a little bit closer to achieving my goals and reaching my dreams! I am applying for acceptance into the PD graduating class of 2017 but, if this is not available I will gladly accept enrollment into the 2018 grad-uating class. Thank you in advance for your consideration. Sincerely,

Table of Contents 1 -OCTOSHOE Design perimeters & initial ideation

2 - 3 -Concept development

4 -Product description

5 -Final product w/ design variations

6 -Product brainstorming

7 -Pensole Footwear Design Academy intensive study

8 - 9 -U of O course study: Introduction to product design

10 -Footwear development

11 -References

BRAND:NIKEPROJECT:WET WEATHER RUNNING SHOE FOR AN URBAN ENVIRONMENTPRICE:$150DISTRIBUTION:FOOTLOCKER, CHAMPS, SPORTS AUTHORITY

INNOVATION:

STORY: COLOR:

1. The owner & instructor Mr. DWayne Edwards is a 20+ year footwear design vet that got his start at LA Gear and eventually retired from Jordan brand after an amazing career.I designed a multi-terrain running shoe for Danner Boots brand. Their company is based in Portland, OR. I did my best to keep the DNA of the company in my design while expanding on the type of footwear Danner currently produces.I designed this shoe for the US Military because Danner is currently the contractor for the Militarys combat and training boots and I figured since they already had an established consumer it only made sense to work off of that.We had a showing for our products and head designers from places like Nike, Jordan, Adidas, Danner, etc. came out to view our work and discuss our designs. It was a wonderful experience and the knowledge I gained there will continue to help me throughout my career.

Footwear Design Academy

U of O Course Study: Introduction to Product Design24 in

6 in

9 in

48 in

21 in 21 in

front back 4 in

side

leg

1/2 in

9 in

12 in

6 in

11.5 in

top

4 in

12 in

(drill hole)

3.5 in

Design a Cornhole Playing Board

Sketches & Technical Drawings

Perspective Drawings

1/4 Scale Model

Step 1:

Step 2:

Step 3:

Build Full Scale Product

U of O Course Study Finished Product

Step 4:

FOOTWEAR DESIGNS & THE INSPIRATION
