The Glory of These Forty Days 584 I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say 723 I Received the Living God 619 There's a Wideness in God's Mercy 648
Placing the Mystery of the Person You Are Before Divine Mercy St. John Paul II wrote: “The evil of our times consists in a kind of degradation, a
pulverization, of the fundamental uniqueness of each human person. To this disintegration, we must stand up for the blessed mystery of the person.” Yet, how is it that we can protect the blessed mystery that is each one of us? We can do this by inserting ourselves in the very place of the Samaritan woman in today’s Gospel. And why are we to do this? Because she placed the mystery of her life before the mystery and the mercy of God. This encounter of Jesus with the woman at the well is the ideal for each one of us. She, though a sinner, is the example for each one of us, also sinners. And the exchange between the two is astonishing. In fact, it demolishes the rationalistic understanding of the person made popular by Rene Descartes’ formulation, “I think therefore I am.” For you see, in this exchange between Jesus and the Samaritan woman, we come face to face with the Biblical truth of the human person: “I am a mystery who is divinely loved, so therefore I exist.” This is the very reason for our faith. Faith gives birth to an act of divine love. Once the woman had faith in Jesus, she allowed herself to be loved by God and, as a result, everything in her life changed. In fact, she did not have to have it all figured out, but she could now savor what was to come.
And it is here, in three specific ways, that she is the model for each one of us. First, she
recognized the relentless nature of God’s mercy. Jesus so deeply desired to meet her that He broke many of the Jewish norms of the day and had the “audacity” to speak to a woman, and a public sinner no less. Friends, no matter what we have done, God’s Divine Mercy is relentless and wants to track us down. We are never to think that we are unworthy of this divine love. In fact, God does not love us because we are worthy; we become worthy because God loves us. Second, she allows Jesus to invite her to be generous when He asks: “Give me a drink.” What is so beautiful in this encounter is that Jesus does not begin the conversation with this troubled woman by pointing out her sins. No, He begins the discussion by inviting her to be generous. She had something to give! Friends, this same relentless love tracks us down and recognizes that we too have something to give. And, finally, she recognized that God’s mercy is demanding. After she realizes who Jesus is, He lovingly turns to her, towards her behaviors that will stand in the way of her realization of the gift Jesus longs to give her. This is not a mercy that makes no demands. He relentlessly tracks her down; He invites her to be generous; He cajoles her; and she experiences His love and mercy. But, He then brings up a criticism of the state of her life in terms of her husbands. The woman has to work some changes in her life if she wants the fullness of what God intends to give her. Friends, what are the quality of our relationships right now? Are there changes that we should make? Such demands may sound extreme, but that is because God is extreme in his mercy!
