On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. He told a parable to those who had been invited, noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at

the table. "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at table in the place of honor. A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him, and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say, 'Give your place to this man,' and then you would proceed with

embarrassment to take the lowest place. Rather, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place so that when the host comes to you he may say, 'My

friend, move up to a higher position.' Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table. For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but

the one who humbles himself will be exalted." Then he said to the host who invited him, "When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or

your brothers or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors, in case they may invite you back and you have repayment.

Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;

blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."

Census Workers Start Address Canvassing Operation Census Bureau workers will be canvassing neighborhoods in San José to confirm and record address-es in preparation for the 2020 Cen-sus. This operation is important in ensuring that the Census Bureau has a complete and accurate master address file that will be used to mail Census 2020 information to all households. Census data determines political representation and federal funding for critical programs that support education, housing, trans-portation, social and emergency disaster relief services. As part of this operation, Census workers may contact residents to confirm address information. No personal infor-mation (e.g., social security, bank or credit card account, driver’s li-cense) will be requested. Census workers will have official govern-ment badges with their photo-graphs, and carry black canvas bags and laptops with the Census logo. If a resident is in doubt about a visitor, s/he can call the U.S. Cen-sus Bureau Regional Office at 213-314-6500 to verify the person’s identity. If it is determined that the visitor is not an official Census worker, residents should call the San José Police Department non-emergency line at 408-277-8900 to report the incident. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The readings today center on mindfulness, aware-ness of where we stand in God’s plan. The mountain of Sinai carries a message of the majesty and distance of God, while Jesus’ presence as host of the banquet speaks of intimacy and mystery. September’s shadow calls us all to mindfulness as we prepare to return to life outside of summer. The Christian life holds these two places of knowledge of God in careful balance. Even in the accounts of the Passion we see the table of the upper room in balance with the Mount of Olives. Altar means “high place,” yet it is also a table. The former liturgy of the Latin Rite began with the priest bowing at the foot of the altar’s three steps, chanting Introibo ad altare Dei, or “I will go to the altar of God,” followed by the altar servers’ response, “The God who gives joy to my youth.” Many parishioners can recall and recite this scene by heart. As with so many things in liturgy, there are layers of meaning in our worship. The altar table evokes memories of the high places once re-served for encounter with the holy, and the intimacy of the table where hospitality draws us to share food and drink.

Sacrament of Baptism The Sacrament of Baptism for infants and children under the age of 7 years is celebrat-ed at the Cathedral monthly. An orientation to this sacrament of welcome and the role of parents and sponsors is a required aspect of the arrangements. Meals played an important role in the so-ciety in which Jesus lived. More than a time for sharing nourishment, they were a time to share ideas and to model different aspects of social relationships. In Luke's Gospel, the places that a person ate (at the

home of a tax collector, 5:29), the people with whom a person ate (sinners, 5:30), whether a person washed be-fore eating (11:38), and, as is the case here, the place that a person sits while eating are all important. The nar-rator says Jesus tells a parable, but it is really wise ad-vice to both guests and hosts about finding true happi-ness at the heavenly banquet. Jesus warns guests to wait before taking their places at the table lest they be asked to move if someone more important arrives. This is more than just a lesson about dinner etiquette. It is ad-vice on how to find your true place in the Kingdom of God. Jesus advises hosts not to invite people who would be expected to repay them to dinner but to invite those who could not repay: the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. This is where real blessings can be found. In these sayings, Luke gives us not only advice on how to approach the end times but also on how to live ac-cording to Jesus' vision of a good society. Luke's Gospel also advises us how the Church must be part of bringing about this society. It is yet another example in Luke's Gospel of the reversal the kingdom brings about. Loyola Press

S aint of the Week Saint Giles 650—710

Despite the fact that much about Saint Giles is shrouded in mystery, we can say that he was one of

the most popular saints in the Middle Ages. Likely, he was born in the first half of the seventh century in southeastern France. That is where he built a monastery that became a popular stopping-off point for pilgrims making their way to Compostela in Spain, and the Holy Land. In England, many ancient churches and hospitals were ded-icated to Giles. One of the sections of the city of Brussels is named after him. In Germany, Giles was included among the so-called 14 Holy Helpers, a popular group of saints to whom people prayed, especially for recovery from disease, and for strength at the hour of death. Also among the 14 were Saints Christopher, Barbara, and Blaise. Interestingly, Giles was the only non-martyr among them. Devotion to the “Holy Helpers” was especially strong in parts of Ger-many and in Hungary and Sweden. Such devotion made his popularity spread. Giles was soon invoked as the patron of the poor and the disabled.

Sadly, the pilgrimage center that once drew so many fell into disrepair some centuries after Giles’ death. Reflection Saint Giles may not have been a martyr but, as the word martyr means, he was a true witness to the faith. This is attested to by the faith of the People of God in the Middle Ages. He became one of the “holy helpers” and can still function in that role for us today. Saint Giles is the Pa-tron Saint of the Disabled, Disasters and the Poor
