When the sower, in this week’s Gospel, sowed his seed, not all of it fell in “good soil.” What can you do to make sure that you are open to God in your life? What is getting in the way of your being “good soil?”

The weekend of August 12-13th is San Jose Jazz Festival weekend and extra time for arrival to Mass and parking should be considered. We will enjoy the essence of jazz in our Eng-lish Masses and are very happy to have Frank and ValLimar Jansen back for their wonderful music ministry. They will join us for 4:30pm and 11:30am Masses. Our 2nd collection will benefit music ministry.

Support Group for Families of Incarcerated Persons The Diocese of San Jose, through the Office of Restorative Justice, has formed a support group for family members of incarcerated persons. This group meets at 7:00pm on the third Tues-day of each month at the Women’s Gathering Place (First Presbyterian Church) 49 North 4th Street, San Jose 95112.

The purpose of this group is to pro-vide support, encouragement, and prayer during this difficult time.

The parable of the sower Today’s Gospel marks the beginning of the third long discourse given by Jesus in the

Gospel of Matthew. Over the next few weeks, the Gospel readings will consist of the entire 13th Chapter of Matthew’s Gospel, a lengthy teaching discourse. Throughout this discourse, Jesus will offer sever-al parables to illustrate for his listeners what he means by the kingdom of heaven. He begins with the parable of the sower, which appears rather straightforward—of course seeds grow best in good soil. Seeds that miss the soil, are sown on rocky ground, or are sown among other plants will not grow. The surprise in the parable is the enormous yield of the seed that is sown on good soil. Jesus then explains his use of parables. Jesus seems to suggest that he uses parables to teach because the meanings of parables are not self-evident. The hearer must engage in some degree of reflection in order to comprehend the message of a parable. In this way, the medium—the para-ble—models the point of the parable of the sow-er. Those who are willing to engage themselves in the effort to understand will be rewarded by the discovery of the message and will bear fruit. To bring home the point, Jesus interprets the par-able of the sower to his disciples. The different types of soil in which the seeds are sown are metaphors for the disposition with which each individual hears the teaching about the kingdom of heaven. Some will be easily swayed away from the kingdom of heaven. Some will receive it for a time but will lose it when faced with dif-ficulties. Some will hear the word but will then permit other cares to choke it out. Yet some will receive it well, and the seed will produce abun-dant fruit. - Loyola Press

S aint of the Week Saint Kunigunde 1224-1292 When Pope John Paul II traveled to his native Po-

land in June 1999, he fulfilled a long-held dream to can-onize Kunigunde (or Kinga), a Polish princess whose ele-vation to sainthood had been stalled for many years be-cause of political conditions. Celebrating the momentous event with him were half a million people who gathered in a field outside the small town of Stary Sacz. Kinga was born in 13th-century Hungary into a royal family distinguished for its political power as well as its holy women. Her aunts included Saint Elizabeth of Hun-gary, Saint Hedwig, and Saint Agnes of Prague; num-bered among her siblings are the Dominican Saint Marga-ret and Blessed Yolande. When only 15, Kinga became engaged to the man who was to become the next King of Poland: Boleslaus the Chaste V. Upon their marriage, the two took vows of chastity before the bishop and lived out their promises during their 40 years of married life. Mean-while, Queen Kinga undertook the care of her young sister and spent many hours visiting the sick in hospitals. As the First Lady of Poland she was ever attentive to the welfare of her people and their special needs. When King Boleslaus died in 1279, the people urged the queen to take over the reins of government, but she wished to consecrate herself wholly to God. For 13 years, she lived the simple life of a Poor Clare nun, residing at a convent she and her husband had established. Ultimately, she was elected abbess, and governed with charity and wisdom. Kinga was willing to undertake even the most menial of tasks and chores with her fellow sisters, washing dishes, clean-ing house, taking care of the poor. Upon entering, Kinga had stated to the sisters: “I come to you to be your serv-ant. Forget what I was in the past and have me as just another sister religious.” She died a peaceful death, sur-rounded by her loving sisters. For Reflection Queen Kinga cared for others’ needs even as a teenage bride. The virtue of charity, like faith, is more caught than taught. If our young people see us responding to poverty and suffering, chances are they will follow in our foot-steps.

S anta de la Semana Santa Cunegunda 1224-1292 Cuando el Papa Juan Pablo II viajó a Polonia en Junio del 1999, cumplió con su sueño de canoni-

zar a Cunegunda (Kinga), una princesa Polaca cuya cano-nización fue dilatada por años debido a las condiciones políticas. Celebrando el destacado momento con el Santo Padre fueron medio millón de personas en el pueblo de Stary Sacz.
