1.1 CATALONIA INTERNATIONAL GOLF FESTIVAL (CIGF)

CATALONIA INTERNATIONAL GOLF FESTIVAL (CIGF) is a 4-day golf festival in some of the leading golf clubs and resorts in Catalonia. The 2011 event took place in early October 2011, following 5-months of golf events and promotions in the UK & Ireland.

Goal: CIGF aims to educate golfers about the fantastic golf and tourism facilities on offer in the region through professional destination marketing. We strive to generate loyalty and interaction with the most passionate golfers in the UK & Ireland through a series of exclusively sponsored events, online communication, poster campaigns and press coverage.

DESTINATION GOLF MEDIA LTDDestination Golf Media Ltd is Ireland’s largest golf events and publishing company. 1.3 DESTINATION MARKETING – BROCHURES AND DVD’S

A Destination Marketing Campaign ran across 5-months, to educate thousands of golfers in the UK & Ireland about the fantastic golf product that Catalonia has to offer golf tourists.

As part of the Destination Marketing campaign in the UK & Ireland, we were able to distribute over 2000 copies of Catálogo Club de Turisme de Golf 2010 and run the Catalonia Tourist Board Golf DVD at each promotional event in the UK & Ireland. In addition to thousands of golfers who saw the Destination Marketing Campaign, over 2500 golfers directly interacted with brand.

A dedicated website page on Barcelonagolf.com will provide news and results from events across UK & Ireland as well as promote the CIGF. There will also be a website banner here, where Members of Club de Turismo de Golf can promote for a discounted fee. There also is a Facebook page, linking into the existing database of followers that Barcelonagolf.com has.

2.3 - COURSE AND CLUBHOUSE BRANDING AT EVENTS

Destination Golf Media Ltd and Barcelona Golf invested heavily into an array of course and clubhouse bannering. This consisted of horizontal A-Frames; Flying Teardrop Banners; Ex-roll Popup Banners; Table Cloth; 6ft x 3ft Welcome Banner; 12ft x 3ft Welcome Banner; and Course Flags. By investing in this, we had an opportunity to provide a “sense of occasion” for the golfer and to display logo’s and website contacts.

3.18 CAPTAINS QUOTES

Hi Dermot,

I just want to say a ‘Big Thank-You’ for your (Destination Golf) sponsorship of our Saturday Medal competition. The Prize of playing golf in Catalonia was a great news story for the club and we had the highest number of entries ever from our members for this Saturday competition, no doubt due to the attraction of your sponsorship. In fact we had a waiting list at 15+ members. It was a fantastic occasion (the weather was very good as well), it created a great buzz in the clubhouse and great credit is due to you and Ian for being so available to our members on the day. All in all it was a colourful - colourful flags and brochures - and successful day for us and we would be delighted to welcome you again to Old Conna Golf Club anytime in the future. Our winner Alex Brett is thrilled with the prize and so he should be - he’s the envy of the members of our club! Well done again and it was a pleasure to meet you and Ian.

Best wishes,

John G Ryan Captain 2011, Old Conna Golf Club

Dear Dermot,

We would just like to thank you very much for bringing this great competition to Stackstown Golf Club and on the particular day, we had over 150 participants. The prize itself of a visit to Catalonia attracted the players from far and wide and the day was a great success, complimented by the fact that the organising of this event was excellent. The banner advertising on the 9th & 10th tee boxes proved successful from the enquiries that ensued.

I personally hope that this event can take place again next year and our course will be at your disposal if required. Again, thank you very much for your fantastic organisation of this event and I wish you well in future projects.

Our aim was to (1) provide an effective Destination Marketing Campaign to promote Catalonia as a golf destination across 5-months and; (2) to interact directly with golfers through 15 promotional events in the UK & Ireland.

This campaign proved to be highly successfully, with 2,500 players competing in Catalonia events across the UK & Ireland. In addition, poster campaigns and media coverage reached thousands more. Over 60 people attended the first Catalonia International Golf Festival, with players coming from Ireland, Scotland, England and Italy.

Monday 3rd October - Players arrived

Tuesday 4th October - Players played PGA Catalunya. Non-golfers went on a 1/2 day tour to Girona.

Wednesday 5th October - Players played Real Club de Golf El Prat. Non-golfers went on a 1/2 day tour to Monserrat.

Thursday 6th October - Players played Club de Golf de Barcelona. Non-golfers went on a 1/2 day tour to Barcelona City. We also had a Gala Meal and Presentation.

Friday 7th October - 30 players few home on a morning flight. The other 30 players joined us on a visit to Torres, and to Sitges, before returning on the evening flight.

CIGF was managed by Dermot Synnott (Destination Golf Media), Ian Denham (Barcelona Golf) and Susana Viñas (Barcelona Golf). Every player received a Catalonia welcome bag and information was available at each golf course and our registration desk.

Catalonia Tourist Board branding was displayed on:

Golf Course: Teardrop Banners, Popup Banners, Flags and staff uniform.

Hotel: Popup Banners, Table Cloth, Welcome Banner, Gala Menu and Trophies.

Two members from the golf media were invited. Karl Doyle writes for the Sunday World, Teebox Ireland and the Dublin People. Donal Hughes writes for the Irish Examiner and www.golfcentraldaily.com (one of the biggest online golf blog sites). Donal has already submitted an event report on this website.

There were many prizes on offer, but the Overall Winners were: Steve Gray from UK (Men) and Livia Dall’ara Volponi from Italy (Ladies). Anna Carrera was in attendance to present the prizes on behalf of the Catalonia Tourist Board.

On the Tour truck: Which shaft? 2011 Portugal Masters Betting Preview and Tips

Oceânico Victoria Golf CourseVilamoura, Portugal 13 Oct 2011 — 16 Oct 2011

Francesco Molinari 16/1IF there is one player who is owed something at the Portugal Masters it’s Francesco. Denied victory in 2009 when Lee Westwood got an outrageous piece of luck on the 17th on Sunday while he himself missed his short birdie putt. Second on that occasion and tied second again last year after shooting two rounds of 62 and two of 74. After a few weeks off Francesco played great in Madrid last week and is my banker in Portugal.

Peter Hanson 22/1THE big Swede took a 12-week break between appearances in Scotland at the Scottish Open and Dunhill Links but didn’t seem at all rusty with a top 10 on his return followed by a tied sixth last week at Madrid Madrid. It has been over a year now since Peter won at the Czech Open and he has always liked the Victoria Course where he tied third in 2007 and fourth in 2009.

Peter Lawrie 65/1THE Oceanico Victoria course in Villamoura to Peter Lawrie represents a rare break from the monster courses they play week in week out on Tour these days. Two of the four previous winners Richard Green and Steve Webster wouldn’t be considered long hitters by their peers. Lawrie had a great chance here in 2009 but took a fi nal round 76 to fall away. Came back stronger last year to tie sixth and I think he really fancies a crack at this one.

Best Of The RestGonzalo Castano (38/1) is one of my favourite players and I am delighted to see him returning to form. He could have won last week in Madrid but for a second round 75. His confi dence is still brittle but he tied for second last year and is worth following. Like Gonzo, Open de Espana Champion Thomas Aiken (34/1) had a run of six straight missed cuts mid season but found something again recently and top fi ved last week. A great competitor and when he fi nds form, Aiken knows how to win. Simon Dyson (14/1) has only managed one top-10 at the Portugal Masters in 2008 but his form has been very impressive this season.

FED Ex Cup winner Billy Haas is a brand ambassador of the Titleist Performance Institute whose fi tness regime we have covered all season with Robbie Cannon and John Kelly. This week we look at the four keys to Billy Haas’ golf swing and how fi tness and mobility play such a huge role in it.

SO you’re changing your irons this winter and you’re wondering which shaft to buy. This week let’s look at Dynamic Gold shafts, made by True Temper. While there are lots of Dynamic Gold shafts, the three most popular are the R300, S300 and X100. The R300 are the lightest shafts at around 127 grams and will suit most regular higher handicap players with slower swings. The S300 are the next step up. These are a little heavier at 130 grams and

feel stiffer too, usually suiting better players with faster swing speeds. The X100’s weighing in at around 134 grams are the stiffest shafts and generally used by players of a professional standard. Of course there are exceptions and every player’s swing is different. and just because you use an R300 shaft now doesn’t mean you’ll be better with an S300. The key is to always make sure to check the shafts and try before you buy wherever possible.

Escaping the rain for the Catalunya sunshine IT was almost like the dark clouds over Knock International Airport were forming some kind of barrier to keep us in Ireland but when the nose of the Boeing 737 burst out through the grey our trip to the inaugural Catalonia International Festival of Golf was one the highlights of the golfi ng year. Now I don’t now about you but the daily grind of putting on base layers, doing school runs and bleeding radiators can take its toll. Thus landing in Reus just two hours later was a shock to the system. There’s that strange other worldly feel when a blast of hot air hits you as you step on the tarmac. Base layers? They’ve never even heard of them in Barcelona! The Catalonia International Festival Of Golf is the brainchild of Dubliner Dermot Synnott of Destination Golf and colleague Ian Denham. Golfers fl ying from Cork and Dublin will most likely fl y into and base themselves around Barcelona. There you can hop from the tee box to Las Ramblas or Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia, if you’re a sports fan like me, a visit to the Camp Nou is a must. Unfortunately Messi, Iniesta and company were away from home last week but the Stadium Tour for just €22 is a must. The International Festival Of Golf brought 70 golfers together for fi ve days. From low single fi gures to fair-

weather players, PGA de Catalunya and El Prat embraces all comers and it’s amazing to watch 16 odd fourballs sitting on the clubhouse balcony agonising over missed putts in several languages.Of course the key to a successful golf group trip is occupying people’s hours off the course and one of the highlights included combining the transfer to the airport on the fi nal day with a trip to Torres vineyards, a powerhouse in the wine making world, with a fascinating visitors’ centre. For more information on the Catalonia International Festival of Golf check out www.barcelonagolf.com.

1. AT six foot four Dustin can drop step and dunk a basketball from under the hoop. That’s a dunk with just one step to you and me. Many commentators say if he hadn’t become a golfer, Johnson would have been an NBA star.

2. THE Masters or The Open? When Dustin was a kid on the practice greens at Myrtle Beach he always pretended he had a putt to win the Masters at Augusta.

3. JOHNSON’S fi nal round of 82 when leading the 2010 US Open at Pebble Beach was the worst score for a third-round leader at the Open in 99 years. Ironically two of his fi ve Tour wins have come at the venue.

4. WHEN Johnson was 16, he

was one of fi ve boys involved in a burglary in which a gun was stolen. The next day, Johnson was persuaded to use a fake ID to buy ammunition at Wal-Mart. One of the fi ve, Steve Gillian later used the gun to kill a man named Jason Ward. Johnson was required to testify at the trial where Gillian was sentenced to life in prison.

5. DUSTIN’S worst job was as a cleaner at the Myrtle Beach golf club: “I haven’t had that many jobs but that was the worst one of them.”

6. DUSTIN’S dad was a club professional and brought his son to the course every day.

7. JOHNSON’S favourite TV show is Entourage.

8. WITH a one-shot lead, Dustin was disqualifi ed after grounding his club in a controversial bunker on the 18th hole at Whistling Straits at the USPGA Championship. What people may not remember is that he birdied the 16th and 17th to get into that lead.

9. DUSTIN hits his driver 314 yards on average and has had an eight iron shot measured at 220 yards. He has been third in the driving stats for the past three seasons and beat fellow long drivers Bubba Watson and Robert Garrigus in the long drive contest last season.

10. DUSTIN’S favourite place to be is on the water. He owns a 24-foot cruiser with a 200 horsepower engine and is a talented swimmer.

CONGRATS: Into the hat from last week goes Cathal Walsh from Dunmore in Galway

1 The hover: Look at 1 and see how Billy hovers his golf club behind the ball before his swing. This alleviates tension before the sequence even begins providing for a smooth and wide takeaway. You just can’t snatch at your driver whilst hovering your club.

2 Massive shoulder turn and arm height: In order to get your arms to the height shown in 2 you need to have great shoulder fl exibility

and great lat mobility. The general trait among Tour Players who hit it a long way is having a high arm angle at the top of the backswing as shown. Whilst anything above 45º is considered very good, Billy’s arm angle of 63º is just awesome. He generates 172mph ball speed with those high arms and that turn.

3 The lead leg drop: Look at Billy’s left leg at the top of the backswing in 2. It has

moved off his start point due to the huge coil and hip turn. Now at the very start of the downswing in 3, he throws all his weight into his left hip almost driving the weight down into his shoe thus returning his left leg perfectly into position. Creating this kind of lag and the subsequent unwind requires strong oblique abdominal muscles to control the unwinding of the torso. The abdominal muscles almost put the brakes on the hips

and lifts the pelvis creating the perfect impact position at impact.

4 Putting on the brakes: Look at 4 and how Billy’s abdominal muscles almost put the brakes on the hips and lifts the pelvis creating the perfect impact position at impact. It’s a trait similar to Rory McIlory’s and the key to huge hitting. You can view the video of this exercise on www.golfcentraldaily.com.

1. Golfshot GPSTHERE are literally loads of GPS related apps for golf but Golfshot GPS is pretty much regarded as the best. Not only does it have thousands of courses mapped with distances to greens, hazards etc but it tracks all your stats. It’s an expensive app at €22.40 but compared to GPS devices, it’s cheap.

2. iSwing GolfI FIRST saw this app being used by the Tour caddies at the Irish Open. iSwing allows users record their golf swing

on video and replay it frame-by-frame in slow motion and analyse their fl aws by drawing lines over their screen to make sure they’re on-plane. This one is only a couple of quid but provides an incredible amount of data. Within the app you can then purchase an add on which allows you to compare your swing with that of your favourite pro in a split screen format.

3. PGA TourALL the big Tours have apps but the offi cial PGA Tour app is the best. This free app provides schedules, real-time scoring, video highlights, player stats and more. If you’re unfamiliar with a certain course on

the Tour, the app also offers course profi les complete with images of each hole. Live video is even available for some events.

Steve Jobs’ legacy to golfTHE untimely passing of Apple boss Steve Jobs last week was very sad. It’s not many people who can say they had an impact on almost every aspect of lifestyle be it work or sport. Even in the golf world, a myriad of Apps have changed the way the game is taught and played. Here’s a rundown of the fi ve best golf Apps on the market.

5.2 GOLF TOURISM INDUSTRY REPORT BY IAGTO’S PETER WALTON WRITTEN FOR KPMG IN AUGUST 2010

Main points:

The entire tourism industry has faced enormous challenges over the past two years and of course golf travel is not immune to global events affecting the wider tourism industry, but it has proved to be remarkably resilient both in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 and in the current economic crisis. In short, golf travel tends to recover quicker than general leisure tourism, with avid golfers refusing to be denied their regular golf travel fix. However, their choice of destination and resorts can change quickly and dramatically which means that not all golf tourism suppliers recover at the same rate from every downturn.

Golfers are no longer swayed by bland generic promises of ‘undiscovered golfing gems’ and require specific tailored messages that will convince them that the golf vacation they book offers not only the best value for money but also delivers the type of golfing experience they are looking for. It is much easier for golf tour operators to deliver these market-specific messages than it is for entire golf destinations or individual golf resorts trying to market directly to golfers in perhaps 20 or 30 countries. Therefore although life has definitely become a lot tougher for tour operators over the past decade, with decreasing margins meaning that higher sales volumes are required just to stand still, tour operators can take heart from the fact there are now more reasons than ever for golfers to book through operators who know the product, do the leg-work, protect their advanced payment and manage adversity!

If an entire destination suffers a bad reputation then this can drag down even the best individual golf resorts and courses or at least make them have to work twice as hard to get results. So it is essential that all golf destinations position themselves in the best possible way to attract the golfer and make it easy for the golf tour operator to sell the destination. Sustainable growth achieved through the delivery of value for money and consistent pricing has to be the objective, and the golf tourism industry must embrace it collectively.
