Research Design || Focus Setting

The purpose of this exploratory study is to understand the relationship between existing memberships and services of American Legion Post 135 and the conditions providing opportu-nities for holistic growth and organization development and transition.

The American Legion was founded in 1919 by Congress to benefit veterans who served during a time of conflict. The Legion offers a variety of services and events, though the primary focus is in organizing commemorative events, offers volunteer veteran support activities, and remains active in U.S. politics.

The local American Legion Post 135 located in historic downtown Savannah provides an opportunity-rich research site because it exists not only as an organization for fellowship and benefit of military veterans , but is a community environment for interaction, outreach, and support.

Initial areas of contextual inquiry can be categorized into four categories:

•Membership and recruitment impacting diversification and growth of member base.

•Services, technology, and lifestyle leading to a direct adver-tising and marketing plan, consequently modernizing Ameri-can Legion as a brand

•Organization events and third-party revenue resulting in increased revenue opportunities

•Benefit and grant opportunities offered for support programs that providing better and broader-reaching services for more veterans.

Moving into our synthesis and analysis phase, we decided to reframe the idea of the office chair by comparing it to other seating systems that exist outside of the home office domain. We also compared the corporate office space with the home office space.

Fine Art Watercolor Paintings

A Habitat Harmed“Environmental Effects of Global Warming”January 200818” x 24”Watercolor Paint

MethodologyAfter collecting and arranging an assortment of magazine clippings, internet prints and personal illustrations, I began to integrate them by composing several sketches.

My first sketch was a horizontal composition. This draft satisfied my intent, but I felt that included too much negative space.

I decided to refine my original idea in a second draft. This vertical arrangement contained less negative space, and allowed room for me to collage all my intended ideas into one seamless composition.

Final Concept

Together, the separate but similar scenarios included in the painting form a collage that displays several drastic effects of global warming, as it pertains to the various habitats of current endangered species.

s Contextualization

A Habitat Harmed (2008) was selected to be featured on the front cover of the 2009 Excelsior Fine Arts Department student art calendar. It was also on display in the Celebrate Black History exhibition at the Character and Heritage Institute (Tallahassee, FL) in February of 2009 and was featured in the VISIONS VIII Graduating Senior Exhibition at the Foster Tanner Fine Arts Gallery from November 13 through December 12, 2009.

Disruptive College StudentsBook Cover IllustrationMay 20088” x 10”Watercolor Paint

Research & IdeationBefore any preliminary sketches of this proposed book cover illustration was made, several individual photos of coworkers and classmates portraying inattentive roles were taken and analyzed, as well as lecture-style classrooms, which are one of the most common types of college classrooms.

My first sketch collaged these students, but only displayed the silhouette of the professor in order to solve the issue with race identity.

The next sketch followed this same idea, displaying only a portion of her upper-body, below the neck.

Refined Sketch

The final sketch included a full image of the professor with the exception of her lower waist. This sketch was chosen by the author because she felt that it best satisfied the idea for her book.

Final Concept

The final concept was rendered in watercolor paint and serves as a vivid depiction of inattentive college students in a classroom setting.

Fine Art Mixed Media Drawing

Ebony RealityA Black History TributeFebruary 200818” x 24”Mixed Media Drawing

IdeationThe 1-point perspective view proved not to be the best angle. The second sketch, rendered in 2-point perspective, proved to be the most effective for space maximization.

Final Concept

Inspired by the initiative of “Black History Month”, Ebony Reality pays homage to African American inventors. This mixed media composition serves as a response to the question “What would this country be like without the contributions of Blacks as African Americans?”, and functions as a depiction of how the basic inventions of African Americans led to a more simplistic way of life.

In this picture, a linear perspective drawing of the “common household” is displayed in shades of black and white, emphasizing value to suggest light and space. Highlighted in various colors are the innovations of African Americans, and towards the central portion of the composition is a rug displaying the faces of six noteworthy inventors embedded in its pattern. In the foreground and right corner of the print is a typewriting machine (invented by Lee Burridge) that contains a piece of paper with a typed quote that reads “By the time we leave for work, Americans have depended on the inventions from the minds of Blacks.” In my opinion, this quote ties the overall idea of the composition together. Located above the typewriter and mounted on the wall of the hallway is a portrait of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the author of the quote himself

IdeationThe preliminary layout for these designs were rendered in photoshop, then converted into layers using the “filter gallery” operation.

Because the letter “X” is a signifier of many things, I decided to use this letter in conjunction with the following terms: “ecstasy” – a state of being carried away by overwhelming emotion“x-rated” - relating to or characterized by explicit sexual material or activity“exotic” - intriguingly unusual or different; excitingly strange

The final designs were rendered using silkscreen printing inks.

Good Morning SeriesSunriseJuly 200930” x 30”Oil Paint

Inspired from the songs Good Morning by R&B singer John Legend, and Knock You Down by R&B sensation Keri Hilson, the woman in this composition takes the form of a beautiful and highly respected monarch butterfly. Emerging from her cocoon, she now has wings to fly away from the harsh life she once had to “pull” herself through in her past relationships while in her caterpillar form. A “promise ring” wraps around her index finger which expresses commitment to her significant other and a “promise” for a future together. The two lovers both lie in a garden of tulips, with their flowers imparting a sense of grace and elegance and their meaning being perfect love (Red tulips = declaration of love, Yellow = joy and happiness). Surrounding this union are other butterflies which represent wisdom and everlasting knowledge. Hovering above is a single white dove, which symbolizes harmony, happiness, inner peace and God, who oversees and protects their companionship.

Digitally constructed in Adobe Photoshop using collaged photo-graphs and pictures. In Phase I: Sunrise, the woman’s face shines bright like the sun, which radiates from the sky behind her as she gazes into her lover’s concealed eyes. Phase II: Butter-fly Kisses is a more maximized view.

The final designs were both rendered in oil paint and glitter glue.

Future PerfectA Series of Couples Portraits While interning at the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science as a graphic designer, I became deeply influenced by Bernard and

Shirley Kinsey’s life story while researching and preparing for The Kinsey Collection exhibition. The Kinsey’s live their lives according to two principles: “To whom much is given, much is required”, and to “live a life of no regrets”. Greatly inspired by these quotations, I felt that it was necessary for me to utilize my artistic ability and decided to give back to two wonderful leaders whom have both given back so much. The oil painting Portrait of Bernard and Shirley Kinsey (2009) is 1 of 3 paintings that was included in the Future Perfect oil painting series. This series also contains of a portrait of my mother and father and current Florida A & M University President James Ammons and wife Judy Ammons.

Fine Art Mixed Media Sculpture

ÉtreinteDecember 20084’4” x 2’8”Mixed Media Sculpture

Ideation Final Concept

4

Étreinte was the product of a project that challenged my approach for three-dimensional design. This abstract form functions as a visual expression of the term “embrace”, and appears as two figures clasping each other.

The completed work of art is a free-standing sculpture, but has a mysterious lean, which greatly contributes to its unique form.

Introduction

8

To begin my process of creation, I developed a detailed sketch of my proposed plan. I transferred this sketch onto a large block of styro-foam, and sculpted its shape using a hot knife. After using sandpaper to smoothen the texture of its surface, I covered the entire figure in hydrocal plaster. Since the bottom neck of this piece was thin in comparison to its upper-most portion, I deposited additional layers of plaster at its base to give it durability. When the plaster set, I added a coating of textured spray paint to give the figure a “concrete” appeal. Finish-ing this form, I added three helium-filled spheres coated in a metallic silver spray paint. This material was chosen for the spheres because they were light in mass and were able to be supported by the weight of the base.

Methodology

This abstract figure focuses on the use of aesthetics and fundamental design principles. With a hollow and narrow shaft extending from the base of the form, I was able to control its equilibrium by packing its “legs” and “head” of its base with thick layers of Georgia red clay.

Final ConceptFollowing a detailed sketch with slight modifications, I was able to bring this artwork to life

s Contextualization

Stitch was featured in the Visions of the FAMU Fine Arts Society exhibition at the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science from February 2 through March 10, 2009. It was also featured in the VISIONS VIII Graduating Senior Exhibition at the Foster Tanner Fine Arts Gallery from November 13 through December 12, 2009, and was on display at The Painter’s Daughter art studio in The Lollipop Tree located in Semmes, AL from March 2010 to December 2010.

Photography The Four Elements

Ideation

While president and founder of the Florida A & M Fine Arts Society (2008-2009), I was able to I was able to successfully arrange and execute planning for the “Explore YOUR Element” poetry night and performing arts showcase. The showcase featured a live body art segment in which each model was decorated in washable tempera paint and represented one of the four elements: earth, air, fire and water. These elements were artistically represented and expressed by the use of color and symbolic design.

Admission is $3 at the door
