Taking questions after the first Public Works and Infrastructure Committee meeting.

Public Works & Infrastructure Committee - First Meeting

Earlier this month, I took the reins of my first Public Works and Infrastructure Committee meeting

    as Chair.

Congestion and gridlock remain my number one priority and it was front and centre on Public

    Works agenda.

We voted to move forward with a pilot project to reduce congestion by speeding up city-led

construction projects. Among other things, the pilot will explore extending work hours, shifting to

overnight work and using incentive-based contracts.

We also took an advanced look at some of the congestion-cutting initiatives lined up for 2015,

including the roll-out of 80 additional arterial cameras, a pilot of the latest smart signal

technology and signal synchronizations on 12 major corridors.

I spearheaded two motions to help get the city moving.

The first asks for a report on using portable cameras at construction sites, allowing us to monitor

and respond to construction-related gridlock in real time.

The second asks for a report on how we can better share traffic-related information between the

citys key players, like the TTC and the Transportation Services Division. I also asked city staff

to explore using Big Data to understand, evaluate and respond to congestion.

You can see copies of my motions here and here. You can also read up on the citys plan to

speed up public-sector construction projects here.

Welcoming Vickery Bowles: Our New City Librarian

As former Vice-Chair of the Toronto Public Library Board and Chair of the City Librarian Select ion

Committee, I'd like to congratulate and welcome Vickery Bowles to her new role as our City

    Librarian!

Our second-to-none public library system has a higher circulation per capita than any other public

library system, and I'm confident that Vickery has the strength and vision to build on its

    incredible success.

Before taking on her new job, Vickery managed a collection of more than 10 million electronicand audiovisual items as Director of Collections Management and City-Wide Services.

Waste Disposal Tips - What Goes Where?

    Recycling (Blue Bins)

Many of the products we consume come in packaging that can be recycled rather than sent to

landfills! These include beverage and food containers, home and personal product containers,

takeout food containers, retail shopping bags and paper.

    Organics (Green Bins)

The benefit of properly disposing organic waste is that it can be reused as compost down the

line! This includes food waste, coffee grinds, and animal waste.

Garbage (Black/Grey Bins or Yellow Bags)

Many of the items we dispose of can be reused or recycled as noted above. If, however, items

must make their way to the landfill, it's important to know what's accepted and what's not.

Household Hazardous WasteBatteries, cleaning products and paint are all examples of waste that should be disposed of

responsibly. The city offers a free service called Toxic Taxi, which allows residents to request a

free pick-up of hazardous waste. For a complete list of what counts as hazardous waste and for

drop-off depot locations, please visit this link.

    Electronic Waste

As technology improves, we are constantly turning over devices and electronics. Including

everything from cell phones to fax machines, e-waste can be part of your curbside collection. For

more information on what it includes and how to set it out, please visit this link.

Speaking to residents during last year's Environment Day.

    Winter Tips and Reminders

With winter in full swing, here are some tips and reminders to ensure you're prepared!

    Snowclearing

Icy sidewalks are a serious pedestrian safety hazard, particularly for our older neighbours and

those with accessibility issues. So please be nice and clear your ice!

Calling 311 is the fastest and most efficient way to report snow and ice issues. Each time

you contact 311, your issue is recorded (with a service request number that can be tracked)

and the request goes immediately to Transportation Services for investigation and follow

    up.

Sidewalk Snow Shoveling Service for Seniors

Services to remove snow from sidewalks are available for seniors and disabled persons.

For more information about what the services entail, please call (416) 395-6303or visit this link.

In addition, Better Living Health offers a program to North York residents who are 55 and older,

called Four Seasons Connections. If you're living with a disability or require extra assistance in or

outside your home, please visit this link.

    Potholes

To report potholes, please phone 311, the city's 24-hour service portal, or visit this link. Have the

closest municipal address on hand - it helps pothole repair crews work efficiently. The city filled

    360,000 potholes in 2014 alone!

    Toronto Hydro

If power is down following a snow storm, Toronto Hydro suggests following these tips:

Check to see if your neighbours have power. If they don't, it is likely that more work is

    planned on your street.

If your home is the only house without electricity, check your electrical panel inside

your home to see if the breakers are in the "on" position.

Check outside and visually inspect if the electrical equipment on your home is damaged or

if the service wire is down. If the customer-owned connection point (usually the pipe and

wires attached to your home connected to the powerline) is damaged, you may need to

contact an ESA-certified electrical contractor. A list is available on the ESAs website

    at http://www.esasafe.com.

In the event of a power outage this winter, you can contact Toronto Hydro's Customer Care
