Coldwater Community Schools’ mission is to provide a supportive

and challenging learn-ing environment where every student is pre-pared to succeed in a

global community.

Coldwater High School has been ap-proved to start an Early College program for the 2016-2017 school year.

This program is perfect for the student who intends to begin their college years at a Michigan community college and who will begin their junior year at CHS in September of 2016. They will have the opportunity to take a 13th year of stud-ies at KCC in Coldwater, kicking off their college education.

“This is a very exciting opportunity for our students. We are very proud to be able to offer this new program here at CHS to help support the current and future educational plans and needs or our students,” said Bill Milnes, CHS Principal.

The great financial benefit to the stu-dents and their families is that almost all of the fees for the classes would be supported by funding from the school. Students who qualify for the Early Col-lege initiative will be limited to students who are currently completing 10th grade and who are committed to attending classes for a 13th year.

Towards the end of the school year, staff members met with students to explain the program and its potential to help stu-dents kick off their college careers.

More information and the Early College application can be found on the Coldwa-ter Schools website at ColdwaterSchools.org

U.S. Secretary of Education John King today announced the selection of Mindy Young of Coldwater, Michigan, who attends Coldwater Senior High School in Coldwater, as a 2016 U.S. Presidential Scholar.

Young is one of 160 out-standing American high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, leader-ship, citizenship, service, and contribution to school and community. The U.S. Presidential Scholars will be honored for their accom-plishments in Washington D.C., from June 19-21.

This year’s class of Presidential Scholars con-tinues a more than 50 year trend of honoring students who’ve shown excellence in their educational, artistic and civic pursuits.

Stormtrooper Kyle Visits Young 5s Classroom Each year, Kellie Stroud’s Young 5s Class-room at Max Larsen Elementary selects a theme for the year. This year’s theme was “Star Wars”. Students have spent the year learning how to “use the force for good.”

In the fall, students collected over 700 pop cans to raise money to purchase food for a Thanksgiv-ing basket that was given to a Branch County family in need. In recent months, students collected pop cans once again, with their efforts raising money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. After five months of collecting, students raised $220

for this cause.

To help celebrate the success of their proj-ect, students were treated to a visit from

Stormtrooper Kyle Fish-er, a volunteer from the 501st Legion. The 501st is a worldwide organization dedicated to sharing the love of Star Wars with chil-dren through costuming and acts of charity. Stu-dents had the opportunity to interact with Kyle and take pictures with him.

Mrs. Stroud and her students were incred-ibly grateful to Kyle for coming to share in their philanthropic celebration!

There were some big changes in the Coldwater Community Schools 5th Grade Band Program this year! Band took place before the school day at CHS rather than in a portable building at Lakeland Elementary during the day. While many were apprehensive about this change in timing and venue, it has turned out to be a wonderful thing for the band program. Band now takes place every day, the stu-dents are able to get more individual-ized instruction, and they benefit from improved day-to-day consistency. Prior to this year, students received band instruction either 2 or 3 days each week so, with the new arrangement, the band was able to get much further in their band books, and play much more difficult musical literature.

The 52 students involved in the pro-gram have also enjoyed the great sense of camaraderie that comes with daily rehearsals and preparing for perfor-mances. On May 17th, the 5th Grade Band performed their final concert for the year. It featured soloists, small ensembles, full band music from the books, and even some musical selections that the band members typically wouldn’t be able to play until 6th grade! It was a wonderful evening filled with music what was beautiful and, often, fun.

There were 52 band students this year, and 82 students have signed up for next year!

CHS Class of 2029 Graduate from Kinder Learning Academy

On May 19, Legg Middle School students, parents, and teachers strolled through downtown Cold-water guided by local his-torian and author, Randall Hazelbaker. The social studies department hosted the historical walking tour that began at the four cor-ners where Mr. Hazelbak-er explained how Coldwa-ter was founded. The tour proceeded down Chicago Street towards the Tibbits. Participants studied cop-ies of photographs and compared them to existing buildings as Hazelbaker revealed the changes that have taken place over time. Families learned about Coldwater’s Ital-ianate architecture and listened while Hazelbaker told the story of Dr. Crip-pen. Discussion of the Kerr Building renovation and Tibbits Theater resto-ration concluded the tour.

Coldwater High School physical edu-cation teacher Kerri Jent has recently incorporated a new program into her physical education classes. Jent con-tacted a company out of Indianapolis that rents inline skates. For the two-week program, the students in her class each received a pair of roller blades, a helmet and wrist guards. Students also received instruction on the use and care of the equipment and how to skate from the rental company.

Students learned how to inline skate forward, cross over, and stop. They were even able to try skating back-wards. They went through obstacles, and they tried floor hockey, team relays and varying games that involved all roller-blading skills.

“This was the best team building unit I have ever taught. All kids were in the same playing field and all kids were great at helping one another. It was awesome to watch

the camaraderie between all grade levels,” said Jent.
