May Meeting Highlights

May 19th, 2020 Regular City Council Meeting

PRESENTATIONS:

The first presentation was an update on the 2020 Water Budget by

Roger Shanus. His report showed lowered expenses and

increased funds for the Water Department.

The second presentation was given by Laurie Sperstad

and Jeff Colbeth regarding Backyard Hen Chickens. The

current City code restricts owning chickens to land designated for

agricultural use. Some of the discussion points Laurie and Jeff

gave are the family friendly and education value of chickens, food

security and quality, insect control, natural garden fertilizer, and the

aesthetic appeal to these flightless birds.

THE COUNCIL:

Held a public hearing, following by discussion and action after

closing, for a variance application at the address of 303 Quentin

Avenue North. The variance request was tabled pending results of

a survey.

Decided to reopen City Hall to the public.

The Request for Proposal (RFP) for building inspection services

from Rum River Inspections was approved.

The contract for Interim Administrator Consultant, Ed Shukle, will

not be renewed for June.

IRS Income Tax Returns Due Soon

Due to the coronavirus pandemic the U.S. government decided to

extend the deadline for filing 2019 tax returns and paying any tax due

from April 15 to July 15. Minnesota decided to extend the state income

tax deadline to July 15 to match up with the federal due date. This

may be good news for anyone who has not filed a return yet, however

time is running short to file a return or request an extension.

See irs.gov/corona for federal income tax return information and

https://www.revenue.state.mn.us/our-response-covid-19 for Minnesota

income tax return information for updates as effected by COVID-19.
