Callington Memory Café There was a hive of activity at Saturday’s Memory Café where members converted tin cans and milk bottles into honey bees. You could say there was a real buzz in the air. We also learned a little about the history of Callington's Honey fair. Chris, who organised the event, provided Cornish Honey cake made with local honey and served with clotted cream. See our website for the recipe, where you can also find out what the café has to offer over the next few months, www.callington-memory-cafe.org

Are you, or someone you know, living with memory loss? Callington Memory Café has re-opened and invites you to visit us. There is no charge (but donations are welcome).

CALLINGTON WI After months of Callington Women’s Institute members zooming to keep

in touch it was nice to finally get back together and meet in person,

even though we were social distancing. Over the last few months we

have had various speakers including the Head Gardener from Cotehele

followed the next month by Chris Cook telling us about Stain Glass, which

were both very enjoyable. In October, there was a lot of hilarity as

members were making Christmas decorations ably led by WI member

Kathie Seldon. It was a very enjoyable evening where we also enjoyed

refreshments made by some members. Members also visited the English

Spirit Distillery at Treguddick, near Launceston in October. Where

members were given a tour and then enjoyed some tasting of different

spirits. The Distillery only opened the week before our visit and is well

worth a visit even if only for a cup of tea!

Callington WI meets on the second Wednesday of each month in the Council Chamber of the

Town Hall at 7.30pm and we would welcome anyone to come along and see what we get up

to. Our next meeting is Wednesday 10th November where the Cornwall Blood Bikes will be

coming along to talk to us.

Poppy Volunteer Group The Poppy Volunteer Group has been very busy repairing the Poppy Wave and making some new panels to cover the railings around the war memorial. The Poppy Wave and the additional items, will be put in place on Monday 1st November at about 7pm. The Callington branch of the Royal British Legion has arranged for help from our amazing local firefighters to install the wave (fingers crossed that they have better weather to do it this year). We are so grateful for their invaluable help; we could not do it without them. Everything the Poppy Volunteer Group does is completely community based. Many people have spent hours knitting and crocheting beautiful poppies. The

Methodist Church ladies have been amazingly productive again this year and have supplied us with hundreds of lovely handmade poppies to use; thank you ladies. Grants from Callington Town Council and Cornwall Council via Andrew Long, Jeremy Gist’s kind donation and Sue Pell’s donation from the sale of prints of her poppy wave mural, have all helped fund the work. The volunteers buy and supply much of the materials required themselves. They really are an amazing and inspirational group of people and I feel very privileged to work alongside them. Last year our local shops and traders joined in with our efforts and did an incredible job of decorating their premises and shop windows, resulting in a truly memorable visual display in honour of the brave men and women who lost their lives in defence of this country and for all veterans living here. We hope that our local shops and traders will make a similar effort this year and help us to show, once again, that Callington has a very caring and respectful community. We invite our community to come along and look at our work and spend a little time reflecting. Let us all

remember the sacrifice made by others in both World War I and II and many conflicts since and show the world

this small Cornish town will NEVER FORGET .

Seasonal Gardening

Tips

Happy November my fellow weed wranglers. I hope you have all survived the deluge of rain. I was considering turning part of my plot

into a rice field, but there is a distinct lack of Water Buffalo in Callington so I scrapped the idea. Despite the bad weather there are still some gardening jobs we can do in preparation for winter and spring next year. Pruning fruit bushes is an important job and the branches and twigs you remove can be laid in a pile for insects to shelter in. Leave your mature ivy to provide another home for them and the berries will be a helpful food source for birds in the colder weather. If you are lucky enough to have grown your own

Brussel Sprouts you should use stakes to prevent

them falling over before you harvest them for

Christmas lunch. My sister Doris has a horrible habit

of putting them onto cook on the first Sunday in

November, so if you should wander past her place I

would recommend a sturdy clothes peg for your

nose. Short one this month as the Newsletter is

crammed with other juicy information and I’m off to

start Christmas shopping at the Ideal Gnome

Exhibition and Hobbits R Us. Ta Ta until December.

Accept that some days you are the pigeon and some days the statue !!!

1st CALLINGTON SCOUT GROUP

Firstly, on behalf of 1st Callington Scout Group, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the ‘Celliwic Evergreens’ for their very generous donation to our group: we will certainly put your money to good use.

The Squirrels have embraced the opportunity to earn new badges this month. So far they have thought up stories in small groups using various puppets and designed a page from their favourite book. We have been baking delicious cupcakes and tasting some exotic foods from around the world. We have even made mini campfires and had a sing-song.

Beavers have completed their Global Issues badge by carrying out various missions. These included making a homemade water filter, roasting some chocolate baked bananas, crafting endangered species masks and learning about Fairtrade. They have also been learning how to spell their names in British sign language.

Cubs have been exploring the local woods and cooking camp twists over an open campfire. They have made some outstanding origami models and tied some knots. Not any old knots though, this time once they completed the knot correctly, they could eat them as we used strawberry laces. Yummy! They also had an evening of Egg Racing. The idea being to keep the egg passenger safe from harm whilst travelling at speed down a hill strapped into a car. Needless to say, some poor eggs didn’t make it. Scouts have covered Emergency Aid in-depth, all agreeing this is a valuable skill for all. They have made various styles of paper planes by completing the Air Activities badge, with lots of fun and laughter during the flying competition at the end! In addition, they have been busy planning their programme for the next term, including a planned evening walk around our local area using maps and directions taking in lots of important landmarks and services. Remember, you can also be involved with our group whatever your age. Simply give us a call on the number on the back page or drop an email to [email protected]

It seems lately we are the beneficiaries of the unfortunate closure of certain Callington’s venerable and long standing Clubs and Social groups. On Friday 8th October we hosted the dispersal of monies from The Celliwic Evergreens. About a dozen visitors attended our venue for the ‘handing over ceremony’ to a number of on-going institutions. The Heritage Centre, together with the 1st Callington Scout Group and The Memory Café were each presented with cheques by Evergreen representative Maureen Stokes. Terry Gimblett kindly attended to record the event. Our heartfelt thanks to the Evergreens for their hugely generous donations. We are currently buying more photo boxes and special photo wallets, to preserve our extensive collection. One of the computers has also had a new hard drive, so this money will be put to good use. On the visitor front we have been busy and it is nice to see parents bringing in younger children; there is plenty to interest them. We would still welcome more volunteers, a discussion took place as to their potential availability, on the one hand each year you apparently have a new batch of ‘Pensioners’ who are the vital resource on which we depend. There again it has been pointed out to me that pension ages are now being deferred, people are working longer together with the role Grand Parents are playing in today’s society, all contribute to the scarcity of those coming forward. I must say and this is a personal view, that I was extremely disappointed that the Callington Lions had decided to do a virtual ‘Honey Fair’. This I found rather odd as on the same day I learnt this, the London Marathon was being run with 40,000 participants. Yes, I know that it is London and this is Cornwall but the potential for problems is surely the same and they chose to go ahead. Well this is an abridged version, to meet the submission date, so my apologies for that. More next time, but in the meantime, we look forward to welcoming you to the Centre in Liskeard Road.

Monthly

Recipe

Beetroot

Soup

Ingredients 3-4 medium (apple-sized) beetroot (about 500-600g/1lb 2oz-1lb 5oz, grated coarsely, or chopped into small dice 500g/1lb 2oz ripe tomatoes, halved 1 clove garlic, chopped roughly 1 medium onion peeled and finely chopped 2 tbsp olive or sunflower oil 500ml/16½fl oz good strong stock (beef chicken or vegetable) salt and freshly ground black pepper 125g/4oz feta cheese

Method 1. Place the halved tomatoes in an ovenproof dish. Throw over the garlic and drizzle over half the olive oil. 2.Roast for 25-30 minutes in a fairly hot oven (190C/375F/Gas 5) until soft and pulpy. Rub through a sieve to remove the skin and pips. 3.Heat the remaining oil in a pan and sweat the onion for a few minutes until soft. Add the beetroot and the stock and bring to the boil. Season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Simmer gently for 7-10 minutes until the beetroot is tender. 4.Stir in the tomato purée, transfer the soup to a blender and process until completely smooth. Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary 5.To serve cold, chill the soup in the fridge, then divide between six bowls. Using your fingers, crumble a little feta into each bowl. A sprinkling of grated raw beetroot makes a good garnish for the cold version 6.To serve hot, reheat the soup until thoroughly hot but not boiling. Divide between warm bowls and crumble over a little feta into each bowl. Serve with crusty bread.

As Callington Community Arts gets back into action, we were delighted with the support of our September audience for “Knives Out” and, as we write, look forward to continued support in October for “1917”. November brings the final film of the autumn season as we present “Mrs Lowry & Son” on Thursday 25

th November.

Nominated as Best Film at the 2019 Edinburgh Film Festival, it tells of the struggle between mother and son as the bed-ridden and bitter mother (Vanessa Redgrave) actively tries to dissuade her bachelor son (Timothy Spall) from pursuing his artistic

ambitions, whilst never failing to voice her opinion at what a disappointment he is to her. Timothy Spall's performance is a sterling study of understatement and pent-up frustration opposite a bed-bound Venessa Redgrave, who plays his domineering, ego-crushing horror of a mother. Within three or four short exchanges Redgrave establishes Mrs Lowry as one of the great maternal monsters of cinema.

Live on Stage for Christmas After almost two years of inactivity, CAVe can’t wait to bring you our live entertainment offerings in the run-up to Christmas. Both productions are ideal for getting into the festive mood: “A Christmas Carol” is more suitable for a family audience, while “Dearly Beloved” has some content more suitable to an adult audience. Both, in their own

way, are riveting and will make a great Christmas treat.

‘Dearly Beloved’: Saturday 20th November at 8.00pm Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate the life and work of Charlie Bicknell, cabaret artist, actress and circus eccentric. 1970… 1980 - last week. She is survived by Louise Innes, ‘internationally acclaimed’ Opera singer and suspiciously alive cabaret partner. Accompanied by a grieving David Harrod on the piano (but then he’s always miserable) and a gratuitous trumpet as Charlie can no longer blow her own. Reverend Jonathan Booth will deliver his eulogy, inspired by The Seven Ages of Man. Illustrated robustly with the help of Tim Minchin, Jacques Brel, Billy Eilish and Mozart, among others.

Charlie Bicknell became a household name playing ‘Delilah’ in BBC2’s ‘This Life’ and subsequently starred as ‘Scout’ in Ben Elton’s West End hit ‘Popcorn’. Continuing to work as an actress for the National Theatre and rep around the UK, Charlie then moved into cabaret and circus, performing all over the world. Louise Innes is a versatile operatic mezzo soprano, who has sung at Covent Garden Opera House, Scottish Opera, La Scala, Festival Hall, and 10 Downing Street to name but a few. She has recently been performing with Charlie in London's’ Crazy Coq, Chelsea Arts Club, St James Theatre and all over the South West. “Witty, wanton, wonderful - cabaret with claws. A heady, edgy high-octane mix of English rose, Vamp and Cruella, shamelessly sexy, murderously funny. You have been warned. Roses have thorns.”

Sue Arnold, The Observer

‘A CHRISTMAS CAROL’: Sunday 5th December at 4.00pm

Joy to all mankind… Bah! Spend an evening in the company of a mean, tight-fisted, squeezing, grasping, clutching old miser. Watch horrified as Ebenezer Scrooge is haunted by four creepy ghosts (wooo-oooh) each one more terrifying than the last. Sob at the bedside of a tiny, malnourished child riven with rickets. Celebrate the festive season with a mesmerising one-man performance of Charles Dickens’ timeless, transformative story Bahh... Bahh... Bahh

Recycling for Charity project updates.

October was an extremely busy month! We promoted the project at Duchy College Fresher's Fair;

Launceston Town Hall Fun Palace; Callington New Outlook group; Delaware Pre School and have plans for

more talks in November. It’s great to see all ages recycling more.

We sent Terracycle 43 BOXES this month: that’s 462 kg of crisps, snacks and biscuit packets, Pringles tubes,

bread bags, cheese wrappers, sweet packets, toothpaste tubes and brushes diverted from being binned

and incinerated, which will now be processed and made into new products like benches, garden furniture,

water-buts, kids toys etc. whilst raising funds for Kicks Count charity who aim to reduce UK still-births.

A car full of CDs & DVDs was sent to Animal Free Research in Bude and we will soon be sending off

unwanted mobile phones, stamps, and jewellery for Hill Pony Resources, a local charity who provide safe

homes for rescued ponies, together with around 60 ink jet cartridges which helps our project directly.

Please remember from the 1st of November the Pet Food programme is closing. BUT you can take your pet

pouches and flexible plastic pet food bags to TESCO stores and they will recycle them with carrier bags

and other plastic packaging. We can now accept Warburton’s waxy bread bags and plastic packaging from all their bread products.

The Recycling project trailer will be in Callington B&M car park on Wednesday November 3rd from 11 – 11:30am

then heading back to Golberdon to box up. If you would like to join us and see the operation in action, please come along.

Contact Ali for directions 07305 044049 or [email protected] If this date isn’t convenient, arrange another time.
