Something for all tastes and all ages..... That’s what is on offer during the 2013 Callington Festival. Over the years

it has grown and, with your support it, will continue to do so: more support means bigger audiences; bigger

audiences mean more income; more income means charities derive more benefit; and also advertising and

sponsorship increase; which means we have more funding; which means we can get bigger acts; which means YOU

have a better Festival and Callington has a greater footfall and the town becomes more vibrant. It’s a win-win

situation, so please get along to as many events as you can.

The Festival kicks off with an exciting event at the Community College: open to all the community from 3.30pm,

“Playing the Field” is a fun, interactive event for all the family. Four artists have been specially commissioned to

create inventive new works with a collection of sound and music installations. Immerse yourself in a Sound Field;

walk through a garden of pinwheels; follow a trail of Aeolian harps; trigger hidden sounds; create your own junk

instrument; perform in a junk orchestra; record your own track! Great for all the family!

After the end-of-year concert featuring talented students from the Community College we open the Festival

officially with the amazing Callington Carnival (see more on page 2) which is followed by the first concert of the

week when we welcome “Spectra Musica” from Somerset, a chamber choir based in Wincanton, which performs

throughout the South West of England and whose repertoire spans six centuries. The concert will be in support of

the Pillaton Church restoration fund, a truly deserving local need.

On Sunday afternoon we are delighted to have John Brolly with us. John is a talented

storyteller who will present his show for children and well-behaved adults. This is a

wonderful concoction of story-telling, poetry and fun that will delight the whole family.

A Bingo evening and a Pub Quiz at the beginning of the

week take us through to our co-operative venture with the

Dante Quartet on Wednesday. A late afternoon workshop

(when gypsy jazz fiddler Tim Kliphuis leads a music

workshop for all ages, instruments and abilities) is followed

by an evening concert in St Mary’s Church with Tim and his

trio delivering ‘the most breathtaking instrumental show

you’ll hear all year’. This world-famous Trio are not to be

missed.

The last four events of the Festival feature Callington’s very

own Community Gospel Choir in concert; the GLADRAG

Summer Ball featuring Strictly Ballroom Plus; the Festival

Concert in the Methodist Church where Burraton Male Voice

Choir, Pelynt Male Voice Choir, St Dominick Handbell Ringers and a Guest Soloist will

be appearing; and the grand finale at Polhilsa Farm which will be hosting the Tamar

Valley Festival of Transport.

The Art Exhibition in Jane’s Floral Designs is linking in with the Festival Week, so do

pop in to have a look at the artwork. There are still a few other things in the pipeline (think

Montmartre in Callington!) and there may well be other events which may yet still

surface, so keep an eye out for posters with updates or keep up with the latest at

Festival!

Mustard Seed Church

Our Sunday services are at 10.45am each week; we have a

their mums from 9.15-11.30 each Wednesday in school

term time and we have a youth group, 'Underground

Youth' on Thursday evenings from 7-8.45 in our

downstairs hall for secondary school age people.

Catholic Church Callington

To whom it may concern:

VANDALISM

Once again we have experienced some vandalism to the

property of 'Our Lady of Victories' Catholic Church in

Coronation Terrace. One asks the question: why?

Damages have been caused to the kitchen double-glazed

pattern door (glass smashed) ; also damage has been

done to one of the bollard lights in the car park (uprooted

from the ground). Once again, why?

Would the vandals show themselves? We know who you

are and also your names. Let us hope you have insurance

to cover the cost of damage you have caused. It will be a

mighty sum!

We are a small community who try to keep what is

known as 'An Oasis of Peace' in a small hamlet of

Callington where we like to keep in and around the

surrounding area looking good for the people of

Callington. The Church is open from 4pm Saturday and

Mondays. To the Vandals, we await your visit.

PROBLEMS we need to address.

1. We have recently experienced dog poo appearing on

the church lawns. Children from the Catholic

Community have been experiencing dog poo on their

shoes. Not a nice experience! POLITE NOTICE. To

whom it may concern, please refrain from walking your

dogs on the Church lawn. Also football is not allowed.

Trespassers are also not allowed.

We have had complaints from the residents in the

bungalows opposite the church lawns about the noise

which disturbs their afternoon rest. So may I remind the

culprits of the above that the Catholic Church,

Coronation Terrace and surrounding area (which

includes the car park) is private property and belongs to

the Roman Catholic Diocese of Plymouth.

Watch out, you trespassers!

We would like to thank Emma and her immediate family

who live opposite the church for total commitment in

keeping a beady eye and reporting to us any problems.

Their help is most valuable and much appreciated by the

Catholic Community.

Your Say...

Honey Fair

The Lions of Callington are already busy

behind the scenes making preparations and plans

for Callington’s Honey Fair Day which, as always, will

take place on the first Wednesday in October.

Don’t forget to pop the date in your diary and watch this

space for further details

Community Spirit

On May 29th at the Mustard Seed Hall a meeting took

place where 40+ residents from the Broadmead/

Glebelands area of Callington met to discuss the re-

introduction of the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.

Special thanks to Julie Dowton representing Devon and

Cornwall Community Watch Association who gave an

overview of the neighbourhood watch system. Professor

Mike Moore shared his knowledge of running a NHW.

Thank you to PCSO Mark Stribley and our Portreeve

Denise Winfindale for their support. It is important to

remember that the NHW is not just about crime

prevention but also aims to build a better community

spirit and promote good neighbourliness.

MayFest thanks...

What can I say? I was very privileged to be a Callington

resident these last few days. Having invited 52 people

from France to join us, I was grateful to all who supported

me. Firstly, thanks to the minister Tony and the church

wardens for allowing us to use St Mary’s Church. The

joint concert with the Callington Community Gospel Choir

on Thursday evening was well supported and raised just

over £215 for the Merlin Centre. Thanks to the choir for

freely providing refreshments. Thanks also to Kay and all

the staff at the Bulls Head, who provided our French choir

a banquet fit for a king at cost on Thursday evening.

The MayFest itself saw all of our French guests joining in

the merriment and filling the streets with joy, laughter,

song and dance. Thanks to all those who then helped with

the tea, coffee and wine reception at the church. Dishes

done, then dash to the Bulls Head, where the marquee,

lounge and function room overflowed with the most

wonderful sense of community. Dancing, singing, live

music, ale, wine, pork, sausages, burgers, piano, squeeze

box and French sea shanties filled the air. The atmosphere

created was simply magical and will be treasured for a

lifetime.

Our French guests left just before 8pm, but not before

commenting on how wonderful the whole experience had

been, and how much they would like to return to our

wonderful town of Callington again one day.

Thanks to all those involved in organising the MayFest,

and let us all remember to be grateful for what a wonderful

town we have.....

the Community College being

presented with certificates of

appreciation for having raised £400

The girls decorated poppies, made

cakes and biscuits and then went out

and sold them among family and

friends for this worthwhile course.

The Royal British Legion,

a huge thank you for taking the time

and initiative to help soldiers,

seamen & airmen of our Armed

Forces to get a better life after the

Update on Town Council News and Business

When Councillor Denise Winfindale took over as your Portreeve and Mayor for the municipal year 2013/2014 it was her pledge

to keep the residents more informed, so herewith the latest news from your Town Council.

In May we said farewell to retiring Councillors Kate Glancy, Rick Lumley, Heather Jones and Chris Thomas. Their support and

guidance over the years has been much appreciated. We now welcome two new Councillors, Mark Smith and Dave Williams,

both traders in our town. At the time of going to print we still have two vacancies (one for Kelly Bray and one for Callington)

on the Town Council. If you are community-minded and have a few spare hours on a Tuesday evening, have you ever

considered being a Town Councillor?

We are also looking to recruit a new Town Crier to represent the town at the various civic and community events. Anyone

interested in becoming a Town Councillor or the Town Crier should write to the Town Clerk.

During May the Councillors agreed their new committee structures, which were are as follows:

At the Full Council meetings we do hold a Public Session at the beginning to take any questions, so please do come along with

any queries or concerns you might have.

Further details on the Councillors and the responsibilities of each committee will be provided in our Annual Parish Report,

which will be produced soon.

Over several months Councillors have been addressing anti-social behaviour issues but we have taken further steps recently.

Firstly, Councillors have arranged for additional CCTV coverage in order to monitor problem areas; this will collect the

necessary evidence for the Police. Secondly, staff will be trained on environmental enforcement, which means they will have

the authority to issue Fixed Penalty Notices for litter dropping and dog fouling on behalf of Cornwall Council.

Keeping up to date on training and current legislation is always on the agenda.

Only last month the Councillors and staff renewed their Fire Safety certificates. In the

picture you will see your Portreeve & Mayor, Cllr Denise Winfindale, getting stuck in.

We also welcome our newest tenants to the Pannier Market, Tamar Grow Local. More

details can be found on their website, www.tamargrowlocal.org/about-tamar-grow-

local .

Tamar Grow Local (TGL) is a ‘not-for-profit’ Community Interest Company (CIC) set

up on co-operative principles for the benefit of the community promoting sustainable

local produce in the Tamar Valley.

The Town Council will also be reviewing its website during the year in an attempt to

raise the profile of the town and to computerise many of our procedures and records,

such as on-line booking for the town hall facilities.

Councillors entertained the French exchange students for an evening in June as part of their week’s events.

Over the summer months, you will no doubt see our workmen whilst on your travels; they are particularly busy at this time of

year keeping the grass verges under control and weed spraying. This is a contract that we have agreed to continue this year for

Cornwall Council.

CALLINGTON’S FRENCH EXCHANGE

GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

The forecast of a week of sunny weather heralded

the arrival on June 2nd of twenty students and

their teachers from Guipavas, Brittany for the

second leg of the French exchange to Callington

Community College. A fun-packed week had

been arranged with activities including Tai Chi

with one of Callington’s visiting Chinese teachers,

Taiko drumming with Music teacher Adam Lane

and a trip to Woodlands theme park.

One of the most popular events of the week was

the Lego Robotics Olympic games run by

Callington’s robotics specialist, Ben Watts. The

students worked in Anglo-French teams and had great fun communicating in English and French in order to

complete all of the challenges.

Also, a fantastic farewell barbecue was hosted by Callington Town Council, where Portreeve Cllr Denise Winfindale

welcomed the visitors to Callington. Music and karaoke for the evening was provided by exchange participant,

Jonny Burnard. A farewell Cornish cream tea took place on Friday afternoon in College to finish the week off nicely.

This year’s French exchange has been voted a massive success by students and teachers alike and planning has

already started for 2014. The week certainly succeeded in cementing new friendships as the unprecedented amount

of farewell tears at the ferry port confirmed.

Callington Foodbank

We have a Tesco collection on Friday July 5th and Saturday July 6th. We are looking for volunteers to help on those

days in collecting food and also regular volunteers for the drop-in centre which opens Mondays, Wednesdays and

Fridays from 2-4pm. If anyone would like to help, phone me on 01579 389576. We have now fed 1649 people in

volunteer at the drop-in. We have a satellite centre at Tamar Valley Methodist church which opens from 10.30-11.30
