The SHARE in our Community Free Family Fun Day was an amazing success on Bank Holiday Monday. There have never

been so many children in Golberdon Park, estimated around 300 people in total, all enjoying the activities laid on by South Hill Parish Renewable Energy community group, S.H.A.R.E.

Events centered on energy and money saving tips, recycling and reducing waste, clothes alterations, promoting cycling with E Bike demos and bike slalom course, planting seeds, foraging the hedgerows and an energy science project. Plus The Big Beat Junk Band invited everyone to join in and make lots of noise.

“South Hill Rocks” was launched as rocks were painted and hidden around public spaces for people to find, then upload a photo to South Hill FB and re-hide, encouraging families to be creative and explore the area. Join in the fun, like South-Hill FB www.facebook.com/SouthHillParish or visit www.south-hill.co.uk/south-hill-rocks

Free Energy Saving Light-bulbs were donated by E-On, sunflower starter kits and grocery Bags for Life, donated by Tesco, Mor-risons and Waitrose were given away. A massive thank you to everyone that helped make the day so special, to all that donat-ed items, Tamar Organics, Spar, Launceston Cycles, Compton Park Farm Shop, Callington Fresh Produce, our generous parish-ioners, the South Hill WI ladies for teas, the South Hill Horticultural Show for including the Sunflower class on August 19 th. MANCHESTER BY THE SEA Academy Awards 2017

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role: Casey Affleck

"That Manchester By The Sea is so absorbing is down to Lonergan's painstaking directorial style and to a superb Method-style performance from the lead actor."

"The movie is pulsating with urgency and feeling. I could not take my eyes off any of these people."

"A gut-punching, heart-breaking movie, with Affleck's Lee in the epicentre ... a perfect role for the under-appreciated actor." After the death of his older brother Joe (Kyle Chandler), Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is shocked to learn that Joe has made him sole guardian of his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Taking leave of his job, Lee reluctantly returns to Manchester-by-the-Sea to care for Patrick, a spirited 16-year-old, and is forced to deal with a past that separated him from his wife Randi (Michelle Williams) and the community where he was born and raised. Bonded by the man who held their family together, Lee and Patrick struggle to adjust to a world without him.

LION

Starring Dev Patel & Nicole Kidman

"Lion is an astounding, all-encompassing story of hope, determination and dumb luck that will leave you both crying like

a baby and clapping like a seal once the credits roll."

"This is an inspiring story about one young man's search for identity."

"An astonishing true story that's treated with an admirably light and artistic touch, rather than an overly dramatic heavy hand."

Five-year-old Saroo gets lost on a train which takes him thousands of kilometres across India, away from home and family. Saroo must learn to survive alone in Kolkata, before ultimately being adopted by an Australian couple. Twenty-five years later, armed with only a handful of memories, his unwavering determination, and a revolutionary technology known as Google Earth, he sets out to find his lost family and finally return to his first home.

FIRST CALLINGTON SCOUT GROUP

For more information please email [email protected] or [email protected]

During May the Beavers had a sleepover! We went on a hike, played some Samba, made wooden pictures frames, leaf crowns, bird feeders, sang campfire songs and ate tons of cake!! Although not much sleep actually occurred, they all had an amazing time.

The Cubs have been up to Appleby Lodge working on their Community badge, planting flowers, chatting and singing with residents, some Cubs played their musical instruments too. They have also recycled some old pallets and transformed them into planters.

From June we will have a Scout Troop again! If your child is aged 10½-14 years old and would love to give Scouts a try please contact us for more information on the emails below.

We meet in the Scout Hut at the top of the Co-Op car park in New Road, Callington. Maybe you fancy helping out too, we are always seeking adult members to join our ever growing team. It's great fun and extremely rewarding. It looks fantastic on your CV too. You would be helping the youngsters of the local community to get outdoors, try new things, gain confidence and most importantly have fun!

For more information please email [email protected] or [email protected] or [email protected]

Ladies Luncheon Club

Hello July! Surprise us. June was beautiful, it certainly made one happy to be alive. Twenty ladies gathered for our monthly luncheon club, we did not let the sun outshine us for we all had a delightful beam on our faces, it was a great day.

Please note that we have changed our July luncheon date to Wednesday 12th July, usual time, 12 noon for 12.30pm. This will be our last gathering of the season. We have no meetings in August or September. This allows the grannies to spend some time with their grandchildren over the holiday period.

We will meet up again for our fifth year since formation on 4th October, same time same place. I look forward to greeting you all back to our luncheon club and I will be in touch nearer the time to remind you all of the date.

Although I have had a number of new members who have settled in to the club. I have room for a couple more. Contact Val if you are interested, information below.

As I wish you all a good holiday, let us dance in the sun, wearing flowers in our hair. Let us remember, no beauty shines brighter than that of a good Heart.

It’s fairly common knowledge that during the 19th Century faced with adverse conditions in Mining and Farming locally, at times many from our area emigrated to find their fortune or just plain work. One such place was Callington, South Australia, founded in the 1840s and, in its copper mining heyday when copper was close to the surface, grew to about 600 persons. However, by the 1900s, mining had virtually ceased and the population declined. Ever adaptable, the Cornish miners moved 200 miles north where new deposits of copper were found at Moonta, Walleroo and Kadina, today known as “The Cornish Triangle”. This area, as back at Callington, still goes to great lengths to promote its cultural heritage and Cornish traditions. For most of the 20th Century, Callington, South Australia, became a rural backwater of some 300 people. So what’s it really like now? Thanks to a recent visit by our own Mark Tamblyn, we can fill in some gaps.

The town is situated on the Eastern slopes of the Adelaide Hills and not a dust bowl as I imagined it. In fact, Mark described it as “being forested like the Tamar Valley with orchards and vineyards with good rainfall and four clear seasons”. Today, the town, only a tenth of the size of our Callington, boasts a General Store and Post Office, serves an area ten times the size enjoying all amenities and facilities. It is undergoing something of a renaissance thanks mainly to a new interstate freeway which has reduced travelling times to Adelaide to about an hour.

With cheaper land and house prices it is now attracting commuters and in the last decade the population has grown back up to bonanza mining levels. One thing is for sure, if you plan a visit you are ensured of a very warm welcome! Mark’s excellent book illustrating his visit is on display at the Heritage Centre. Opening times as ever Fridays 10.00am – 4.00pm. First Saturday of the month 10.00am – 2.00pm. Contact Kay Greenstock 01579 383209 or Chris Cansfield 01752 851403

Callington U3A

Our June speaker at the Callington U3A was the delightful and funny Denise Walker, her talk was entitled 'Who goes there', a look at animal tracks.

She suggested when we are out walking in this beautiful county, that we keep our noses to the ground, as there is a world of animal tracks and clues to the wildlife in your area. You need to look for clues to the small dramas that have been taking place.

There maybe fur caught on barbed wire, tracks and trails in the bank, and footprints if the path is wet. Denise showed us various tracks we could spot, like hedgehogs, squirrels, deer and foxes. She showed us pictures of various poo which contains the indigestible parts of foods such as hair, feather, bone splinters, which provide a wealth of information. Smells also play a vital role in the social aspects of mammals. Clues about their eating habits in their droppings can also be found, there are three types, vegetarians, carnivores and birds.

As you continue on your walk she explained other things you might see, like broken birds eggs, if the shards are folding inwardly then it has probably been the victim of a fox, badger, squirrel or magpie. If it has hatched naturally the edges fold outwards and its clean with no yoke marks. She also explained about feathers that tell the story of animal predation. For example, if it was a bird of prey, there would be a mass of down and feathers. The real evidence lies in the individual feathers, there will be a kink or bend in the feather were it has been gripped, the quill base will be undamaged. If killed by a fox then the feathers would be matted together with saliva, the quills bitten off and spat out, with a trail of dropped feathers.

She also told us that moth wings indicated bats. If you find owl pellets, soak them overnight in warm water, then tease them apart with tweezers to discover what the owl had for dinner. Plus, strangely, you can buy owl pellets from Amazon to dissect. If you have interested children or grandchildren or yourself of course.

Denise made us think more about what we could see if we only looked. 'The more you look the more you see'. The Q & A afterwards was both informative and funny.

If you are interested in joining us at the Callington U3A go to www.u3asites.org.uk/Callington or come along on the first Monday of the month 10.00am in Callington Town Hall.

ROTARY CLUB OF CALLINGTON At a recent meeting, Rotary Callington presented a cheque for £400 to the Plymouth Soup Run group. The Soup Run team provide soup and other food to the homeless of Plymouth during the evening, on a regular monthly basis. Bob Wade, Rotary Callington's President said, " the Soup Run is a deserving Callington based cause, which we are delighted to financially support. We are always willing to consider requests from other organisations in the town who may require similar assistance." The photograph shows Bob Wade presenting the cheque to Jeremy Gist of the Plymouth Soup Run group.

CANTICORUM

The choir had a very busy May, opening at Tavistock Music Festival with Tapestry Choir, followed by a concert in St John's Church, Pensilva on 12th, then two appearances at the Callington Mayfest the following day. We rounded off the month with a concert at St Mary's Church, with a German choir – Liedertafel – as part of the Twinning weekend. The choir is now preparing for an equally busy July, starting on Friday July 7th with a concert in St Mary's Church, Callingtn with Mevagissey Ladies Choir, at 7.30pm. The next day, Saturday 8th, they will be singing behind the Bedford Hotel, as part of Tavistock Edge, from 12.20pm – 1.00pm. On Saturday 22nd they will be at St Dominick Parish Church at 7.30pm. Canticorum rehearse on Friday evenings at 7.30pm, in Callington, and would be happy to welcome new members – come and try us one evening!
