Horticulture, which includes fruits, vegetables, tubers, ornamental plants, medicinal and aromatic plants, spices, plantation crops has made rapid stride during the last two decades owing to technical input and incentives. However, availability of quality seed and planting material, a basic to any technology led development, continue to be a limiting factor. Seed replacement rate is still very low. Indian Council of Agricultural Research, through the network of its research Institutes has made significant contribution by way of developing technologies for propagation/seed production and also disease diagnostics which can facilitate the production and availability of quality seeds and planting material. These technologies have been adopted in potato, citrus and banana bringing about a consciousness for quality planting material. One of the approaches adopted is in-vitro production of plants, which has been successfully adopted in production of banana

plants. The Government also encourages policies for ensuring availability of quality seed and planting material. To provide protection to the cultivars PVP Authority is also in place in the country. Advent of biotechnological tools and transgenics have become a reality. At this stage it is pertinent to integrate all the developments together and come out with strategies that can address future needs of seed and planting material which is the most critical requirement of today. Therefore, it is inevitable to take stock of the technological developments and the policies and, develop strategies to ensure availability of quality planting material and better seed replacement rate. Accordingly, it is proposed to hold a four day National Conference on Production of quality seeds and planting material-health management in horticultural crops. On this occasion, to showcase the technological advancement, an exhibition shall also be organized.

I take this opportunity to cordially invite you for active participation in the Conference and share your knowledge for strategic development of seeds and quality planting material for the benefit of researchers and farmers.
