In this, our fifth year of Open Studios North Fife, we have a fantastic selection of participants who work in paint, pencil and charcoal, textiles, glass, mixed media, metal and precious metal, ceramics, wood, stone and photography.

There are many new participants in Open Studios 2010 and those who have exhibited before are producing new work, constantly experimenting and developing ideas.

You’ll find clusters of studios only minutes apart and single studios in more rural locations worth going to for the views as well as the work on show! We have provided maps and directions for each studio but if you are not familiar with the area you might want to bring a road map. All participants will be displaying a white ‘Open Studio’ sign board with the number corresponding to their studio in the brochure. Where wheelchair access is possible

Open Studios is an event organised by, and largely funded by the participants.

The event is an opportunity for you to speak to artists about their methods and sources of inspiration and perhaps buy or commission directly from them. And you get to see inside the interesting spaces in which they work!

it is mentioned in individual entries.

Keep this brochure for future reference. Many of the artists welcome visits to their studios by appointment throughout the year. Make sure you add your name to the mailing list of any artist whose work you admire to receive notice of other events in which they are taking part.

You will be able to pay some participants with your credit card but most do not have this facility so remember to bring a cheque book or cash if you plan to purchase!

WILD CELTIC HARES

E-14 STONELINE DESIGNS Fife, Scotland 01337-810283 www.stoneline.co.uk Marianna Lines © 2008 (a leap year)

The Brown Hare is common in Scotland, found wherever there is cultivation. It runs in the fields in spring and in autumn. The hare is as real as any animal, but it is also part of Celtic folklore where it has mystical associations. Some say the hare is the goddess in disguise, and that witches shape-shifted into that form. Thus, the hare is a symbol of transformation, rebirth, the moon, and of magic (the ‘trickster’). It is also believed that the Hare is the animal magically associated with the famous Iceni Queen Boudicca of Ancient Britain, and the Celtic warrior goddess Andraste whose symbol is the Hare.

The Scots language word for Hare is mauken. In “Tam Samson’s Elegy” (1787) Robert Burns wrote “ Ye maukins, cock your fu’ braw ...” while Galt (1822) wrote “ It is believed that the witches are in the practice of gallanting over field and flood, in the shape of cats and mawkins.”

The history of the intertwined triple hare goes back thousands of years in many cultures, and can be traced to ancient China where the symbol is found in devotional caves. There is a ‘Three Hares Project’ in Britain researching this history. The image of the three hares in a Celtic knot-dance is popular in Celtic circles, interpreted here from a carving by stone artist Gillian Forbes in Path of Condie in Perthshire, Scotland. The natural dye impression by Marianna Lines uses shaggy ink cap mushroom and flower petals for its colours on cloth.

His unique designs push the boundaries of classical furniture structure, combining traditional forms with contemporary sculptural elements. He works exclusively in solid hardwoods, occasionally incorporating metals and other materials into his works. The careful selection and use of grain, colour and texture in the wood ensures that each piece is a unique creation, which can never be repeated or reproduced.

Paul Dodman 46

Mostly Paul paints richly coloured, impressionistic landscapes of north Fife and France in acrylics. These pictures emphasise natural shapes and textures and have a sunny, open air feeling that you can step right into. But he also plunges into moody abstracts and fantasy paintings that reveal a darker side of the artist. His figure drawings, mostly in pastels, lie somewhere between these two, celebrating the natural beauty of the model but also hinting at something just beyond our grasp. Paul’s work may be found in the Baiglie Inn and galleries in Fife and Perthshire.
