Dear Parents Our Year 6 Camp was held down at the Ern Halliday Recreation Centre last week, from Wednesday to Friday, and I want to express my appreciation for the excellent behaviour, camaraderie, positive collaboration and support for each other demonstrated by this wonderful group of children. They all faced their own particular challenges with maturity and respected other people’s with a good deal of compassion. I am proud of them for the way in which they are showing understanding of classmates differences, acknowledgment of their areas of strength and a willingness to accept people for who they are. We are very appreciative of the fine job these young ladies and gentlemen are fulfilling as leaders of the student body here at St John’s. My apologies for the pressure that is being placed on all of you at drop off and pick up time due to the church renovation. We hope we will be permitted to use the church car park within a couple of weeks once all the action requiring large truck movement has diminished. In the mean time I appreciate the difficulty you are experiencing in finding a parking space. Please be very mindful of the need to maintain the Kiss ‘N’ Drive rules
for the safety of our children.
At drop off please go right to the very western most end of the zone so that subsequent cars can come in behind you. I frequently observe cars pulling up in front of the gates with empty car bay spaces in front of them. The idea is to politely accommodate those coming after you. Please also let family members know, such as grandparents who do pick up, that we urge our community to avoid parking on Lalor St across the road from the school. NAPLAN commenced today for Years 3 and 5 and the children were all involved in the Language Conventions

Boxes and Cardboard Required PLEASE! This term, in Art, we are doing a unit on mask making inspired by Kimmy Cantrell. The masks are made from a variety of different pieces of cardboard that are layered to create a three dimensional effect. As each student is making one of these masks it means that we require A LOT of cardboard ... and different types e.g., thick, thin, coloured and corrugated. If you have any that you are willing to donate to the art room please send it in. If possible, can each child please bring in any spare cereal boxes or sturdy sheets of cardboard, which can be cut with scissors. The cardboard needs to be A4 size or larger. The cardboard from a carton is perfect. This is required by Monday 22nd May.

Year 6 Camp We had a wonderful 3 days at Ern Halliday Recreation Camp site last week. Apart from some sleepless nights, it was non-stop action and activities throughout the day and night. We were pampered with delicious food from our caterers at all meal times. It was great to be with our class mates, to see them in a different situation and to watch with amazement the things they did which were very surprising. Many thanks to our parents for allowing us to go and for paying the camp fee. A special thank you also to Mr Schulz, Mrs Bizzaca, Mrs Bottega, Mrs Cotton and Mr Beresford for their expertise, encouragement and advice during these very special days that will live for a very long time in our memories. “Best practice play spaces provide contact with nature, stimulate students’ creativity and imagination, and encourage ‘active play’. As much as play spaces need to be safe they also need to be challenging for students.”
