"Thus says the Lord: 'Standin the ways and see and askfor the old paths, where thegood way is, and walk in it;then you will find rest for yoursouls… Also I set watchmenover you, saying, 'Listen to thesound of the trumpet! '."

Jeremiah 6:1 6-1 7

Civilisation is at StakeSince 1 91 4, God's people havebeen subjected to a HundredYears War. There is a concertedand comprehensive conspiracyto undermine, subvert, eradicate and annihilate thecompany of nations, who havebeen the bastion and bulwarkof Christian civilisation forcenturies.

Recognising the ThreatsThe threats to Bible-believersare very real and extremelyserious. Never have God'speople faced suchextraordinary hostility fromsuch a bewildering array ofenemies. Centuries ofEvangelism and discipleship

have been eroded. Centuriesof Reformation work andRevival blessings have beensubverted. Centuries ofprogress and technologicaladvances have been side-tracked and spectacularachievements are beingundermined and sabotagedon almost every side. Schools, universities and churches havebeen hijacked by secularhumanism and radical atheism.

The New World OrderThe United Nations isploughing ahead with its NewWorld Order agenda ofcentralising control, disarming, drugging, sterilising, pornifying, aborting, homosexualising andperverting the world.

Multi-culturalismIn the name of multi-culturalism, Christians arebeing guilt manipulated, indoctrinated and brainwashedto accept invasions of welfarejunkies to parasite off theproductivity and hard work of

God's people, turning vastareas of our cities into ghettosof litter, pollution and crime.

It is Easier to DestroyIt takes longer to build thanto destroy. For example, it tookthe Americans seven years tobuild the twin towers of theWorld Trade Centre in NewYork. However, it only took anhour for Muslim terrorists, todestroy the remarkable feat ofengineering. Similarly, while ittook 90 years to buildRhodesia into one of the mostefficient and productiveagricultural economies in

Africa, it took Robert Mugabeand his Marxist governmentjust a few years to destroy it.

Building BlocksCivilisation needs: The rule ofLaw, the fear of God,knowledge of the Bible, astrong work ethic, respect forlife and property, an efficientinfrastructure of roads, railways, means ofcommunication, educationalinstitutions, literacy, moralstandards, respect forcontracts, concern forneighbours, compassion forthe weak, practical help for

Great War because it wasliterally greater than any warever waged before that time.In numbers of soldiersinvolved, in numbers ofcasualties, in terms of thedisastrous consequences, itwas the most catastrophicevent in the history ofcivilization.

When Christians RuledIn 1 91 4, Christian nationsruled virtually the whole world. With the exception of China,Japan and the OttomanEmpire, the globe wasdominated by Christianpowers, either Protestant, asin the case of Britain,Germany and the UnitedStates, Roman Catholic as inthe case of the AustriaHungarian Empire, Italy, Spain,Portugal and the FrenchEmpire, or Orthodox as in thecase of the Russian Empire.

Evangelising the NationsChristianity came to thebeginning of the 20th centuryon a rising, and apparentlyunstoppable, tide. Christianitywas gaining spectacularmomentum as Missionariesfrom Europe were Evangelisingand discipling every tribe andnation. The Protestant Faithhad far outstripped theCatholic and Orthodoxbranches in missionaryactivity, vitality and initiative.

The Great CommissionAt the world's first Missions

Conference, held inEdinburgh, 1 91 0, delegateswere anticipating thecompletion of the GreatCommission within theirgeneration. The consensus atEdinburgh 1 91 0 was thatevery nation would bethoroughly Evangelised anddiscipled, and all falsereligions extinct, by 1 960.

Retreat from VictoryHad present trends continued, that was a realistic scenario.Nothing could have stoppedthe positive onward march ofChristianity worldwide, exceptthat Christians werepersuaded to kill one anotherso enthusiastically and soefficiently.

Technological InnovationsWorld War I saw suchspectacular technologicaladvances in warfare assubmarines and aircraft usedin war, flame throwers, gasand tanks.

20th Century Weapons –But 1 9th Century TacticsHowever, these 20th centuryweapons were being usedalongside 1 9th century tactics.Of the 65 million Europeansoldiers who were mobilisedfrom 1 91 4 to 1 91 8, over 9million were killed, 9 millionwere permanently disabled,and 1 5 million were seriouslyinjured.

Total MobilisationRussia mobilised 1 2 millionsoldiers, Germany 1 1 million,France 8.4 million, GreatBritain 8.9 million, (over250,000 under-age boysserved in the British Army,

including one who wasdiscovered to be just 1 2 yearsold. Average life expectancyin the trenches was about 6weeks), Italy 5 .6 million,Austria 7.8 million and theUSA 4.3 million.

The Butcher's BillThe results were devastating. The London Times of 24 July1 91 6, during the Battle of theSomme, listed 608 Britishofficer casualties and 5,500other ranks. This was just oneday's casualty list. 8% of GreatBritain's total population werekilled or wounded, 9% ofGermany's total populationwere killed, or wounded, and1 1 % of France's entirepopulation were casualties. The British Empire lost908,371 people; Russia lost1 ,700,000; France lost1 ,357,800; Germany lost1 ,773,700 soldiers killed. Thisdid not include the manyhundreds-of-thousands ofcivilians who died ofstarvation due to the navalblockade. Diseases accountedfor one third of the deathsduring the war. The British

Army recorded 1 50,000soldiers coming down withvenereal diseases. More mendied in action on the last dayof WWI (1 1 /1 1 /1 8) than on D-Day (6/6/44).

Women in FactoriesWith so many men mobilisedfor war, millions of womenwere mobilised to fill theirplaces in the work places, infactories and on farms. Morethan one million women inBritain were mobilised intowork places previouslyperformed by men. Thosewomen who worked with TNTfound that their skin turnedyellow through toxic jaundice. The mobilising of millions ofwomen into factories andfields to take the place of menconscripted into the war, transformed the social orderand eroded the stability offamilies as a generation ofchildren were deprived of theirinfluence of both mother andfather at home.

Logistical NightmareOver 25,000 miles of trencheswere dug on the Western Frontacross France and Belgium.During the four years of thewar, Great Britain shipped 25million tonnes of supplies totheir forces on the Westernfront, including 3 milliontonnes of food and 5 milliontonnes of oats and hay forthe horses. The British postalservice delivered 2 billionletters to soldiers at the frontand 1 1 4 million parcels duringWWI.

Ruinous CostsThe costs of the war for Britainalone, was £6 million a day.In one 24-hour period, £4million bullets were fired byBritish soldiers on the WesternFront. The total cost of theFirst World War for Britain wasUS$1 86.3 billion.

Crippling War DebtsThe crippling debts incurredby the cost of the war andloss of productivity, led towidespread poverty, famineand hardship as prices soared, but wages lagged far behind.Taxes increased throughoutthe world to fund the ruinouswar debts creating discontentthroughout the empires andcolonies overseas.

PasschendaeleDuring one battle in Flanders,Belgium, 5 million artilleryshells were fired by the Britishartillery, in a 3-day period, along a ten mile front. Anaverage of 5 tonnes of highexplosive was placed on everysquare meter, turning theground into mud, whichswallowed entire units, cavalryand artillery of the British andCanadian forces ordered intothis quagmire ofPasschendaele.

Chemical WarfareIt is not true that the firstchemical and biologicalwarfare in history was in WWI.The Spartans are recorded ashaving used sulphur and pitchto overcome the enemy in thePeloponnesian War, 500BC.

The first use of gas in warfarewas originated by the Frenchagainst German troops inAugust 1 91 4, as the FrenchArmy fired gas grenades (XylylBromide), in the first monthof the war. In January 1 91 5the Germans first used teargas against Russian armies onthe Eastern Front, but the gasturned to liquid in the coldair. In April 1 91 5 , Chlorine gaswas used near Ypres on theWestern Front. The British,French and Germans releasedover 1 30,000 tonnes of gason the Western front, affecting1 .2 million soldiers, of which91 ,1 98 died.

Artillery Most DeadlyMost combat deaths in WWIwere due to artillery, over 60%of all casualties were causedby artillery barrages. In 1 91 4,no soldiers had metal helmets. The French were the first tointroduce metal helmets in1 91 5.

Pool of PeaceThe pool of peace is a 40 footdeep lake near Messines,Belgium. It fills a crater madein 1 91 7, when the Britishdetonated a mine containing45 tonnes of explosives. Thisexplosion could be heard asfar away as London.

Dog FightsThe term 'dog fight' originatedduring WWI. During aerialengagements, pilotssometimes turned off theiraircraft engine, so as not tostall when banking abruptly

in the air. As the pilotrestarted his engine in mid-air, it sounded like dogsbarking.

Assassination in SarajevoWWI was sparked by theassassination, in Sarajevo, ofArchduke Franz Ferdinand andhis wife, Sophie, on 28 June1 91 4. Gavrilo Princip, a 1 7-year old Serbian terrorist ofthe Black Hand murdered theheir to the Austria-Hungarianthrone and provoked themobilisation that quicklyenflamed Europe.

The War Between CousinsKaiser Wilhelm II of Germany,Tsar Nicholas II of Russia andGeorge V of Britain were allgrandchildren of QueenVictoria and first cousins.

Medical AdvancesGreat medical advances weremade during WWI in woundmanagement, blood

transfusions, blood banks, setting of bones, skingrafts, plastic surgery andfacial reconstruction.

Influenza PandemicThe Spanish influenzaepidemic, whichdemobilised soldiersbrought back home, wipedout even more peoplethan had died in the War(1 5 million died of flu inEurope). 3-5% of theworld's population died inthe influenza epidemic of1 91 8. 1 2 million died in

India alone. The influenzaepidemic killed 25 millionpeople in just 25 weeks (byway of comparison, AIDS killed25 million people over 25years) . The Influenza epidemickilled 675,000 Americans (sixtimes more than their wardeaths) , 50,000 Canadiansand 228,000 British. Half ofall the victims of the Influenzaepidemic were between theages of 20-40 years old.

Hamilton of MajubaGeneral Sir Ian Hamilton, whocommanded the Allied forcesin the disastrous Gallipolicampaign was a veteran ofboth Anglo-Boer Wars (1 880-1 881 and 1 899-1 902). He hadbeen captured by Boer forcesat the Battle of Majuba, wherehe was wounded in the leftwrist.

Authors at WarNumerous famous authorssuch as C.S. Lewis (of theNarnia series) , J.R.R. Tolkien(who was born inBloemfontein) , who wrote Lordof the Rings, and A.A. Milne(creator of Winnie the Pooh),fought on the Western Front.

The Christmas TruceOn Christmas Eve 1 91 4 aspontaneous cease fire wasobserved across the whole ofthe Western Front. Beginningat Ypres, Belgium, as Germansoldiers placed Christmastrees on top of their trenchparapets and sang SilentNight, British soldiers joined

in, and soon Australian, NewZealand, French, British andGerman soldiers were singingChristmas carols, exchanginggifts and conducting churchservices together. OnChristmas Day Footballmatches were played in no-man's land as the competingarmies mingled and enjoyedfellowship together, evenvisiting one another'strenches.

Animals at WarMore than 1 00,000 homingpigeons were used by theBritish Army alone. At theheight of the war, the BritishArmy employed 870,000horses. Dogs were alsoemployed to lay telephonelines between trenches.

The Royal Flying CorpThe Royal Flying Corp (RFC)of Great Britain recruitedsporting men who could ridea horse, or drive a car, for pilottraining. 8,000 young men inBritain died during fighttraining. This means that moreBritish airmen died fromaccidents and equipmentfailures than from enemyaction. Most RFC pilotssurvived only an average ofthree weeks, once arriving onthe Western Front. One thirdof all RFC pilots wereCanadians.

The Red BaronThe most successful fighterpilot was German Cavalryofficer, Baron Manfred vonRichthofen (1 892-1 91 8). Heshot down over 80 enemyaircraft in just 1 6 months.

The French MutinyIn May 1 91 7, half of theFrench Army mutinied. Withover a million deaths alreadyin the war, and decimated inanother disastrous failure ofan offensive, 20,000 Frenchtroops deserted outright andthe rest refused to obeyorders. The Frenchgovernment clamped a veil ofsecrecy over the whole affair, but it is known that at least500 French soldiers weresentenced to death officially, and the Commander-in-Chief,General Nivelle, was removed.

Resistance in South AfricaNumerous respected SouthAfrican leaders opposed SouthAfrica's involvement in theWorld War. President MartinusSteyn of the Orange FreeState, General Christiaan DeWet, General De La Rey andChief of the Union DefenceForce, General ChristiaanBeyers, actively campaignedagainst fighting for theirprevious enemies against theirprevious allies, just 1 2 yearsafter the Anglo-Boer War.General De La Rey was shotby police at a roadblock andGeneral Christiaan De Wet wasimprisoned in the fort inJohannesburg for opposingthe war.

The Devil's WoodAt one battle, Delville Wood,in France on 1 5 July 1 91 6, theSouth African Infantry Brigadeunder Major General Lukin, was ordered to occupy theWood and protect the flanksof the British Brigade. After 6days and 5 nights of ferociousfighting, only 750 soldiersremained of the Brigade's3 ,433 soldiers. Of the 1 46,000South Africans whovolunteered for service in WWI,7,000 were killed and 1 2,000wounded. South Africa'sinvolvement in the First World

War cost our taxpayersUS$300 million.

Secularised EuropeEven more devastating thanthe actual numbers of peoplekilled, crippled, or severelyinjured, was the damage tothe spiritual life of Europe.Europe went from being amajority church attendingpopulation to a continentwhere most people did notgo to any church. Along withthe spiritual decline of Europecame the decline of WesternEurope in the total worldscene. The secularisation ofEurope and the breakdownof moral standards coincidedwith the great resurgence ofRevolutionary extremism.

Exploiting the VacuumMarxist Communism filled thevacuum left by the collapseof the Russian Empire and bythe emergence of many newcountries in Eastern Europe, which the Versailles Treatycarved out of the old Austrianand German Empires.

Continental SuicideThe 1 9th century had seensuch staggering growth innumbers, productivity, militarypower and wealth, that onewould have expected thatEurope would have continuedto dominate the globe forcenturies to come. For overa thousand years, Europe hadbeen Christendom, theheartland and stronghold ofChristian civilisation. Theoptimism which had prevailedin the 1 9th century, thegreatest century of Missions, gave way to profoundpessimism after the First WorldWar. The de-Christianisationand secularisation of Europewas not only unprecedentedin its speed and scope, but itwould have been unthinkablebefore the First World War.

Self-Destructive IdeologySocial Darwinism had becomepopular among many of thegovernments of Europe. Thisthinking emphasized theimportance of armed struggle

between nations as healthyand necessary for evolutionand progress.

CataclysmNever before, had so muchof mankind been engagedsimultaneously in war. Neverbefore had mankind massedsuch large armies, or producedsuch weapons, which workedwholesale destruction on sogigantic a scale.

War ProfiteersThe sinister bankers whopulled the strings behind thescenes and engineered theauto genocide of Europe, werealso the ones who ownedmany of the companies thatmade the machine guns, bullets, bombs, shells andartillery, that destroyed thecream of Europe. Manybankers and industrialistsamassed stupendous wealthat the expense of thecombatants who incurredstaggering debts. Those whocontrolled the debt, controleverything. Communismbenefited the most from theWorld Wars, seizing andsubjugating all of Russia, andin time, most of EasternEurope.

Behind the ScenesThere are numerous studiesthat have shown the role ofFreemason bankers andpoliticians, such as Lord

Nathan Rothschild, whosegoal was to bring downChristian civilisation. AsNathan Rothschild, declared:"I care not what puppet is placedupon the Throne of England torule the Empire on which the sunnever sets. The man who controlsBritain's money supply, controlsthe British Empire and I controlthe British money supply! " Therecertainly were major conflictsof interests involved as thebankers, war profiteers andkey members of the warcabinet, were in fact often thesame people.

The Versailles TreatyThe vindictive Versailles Treatyof 1 91 9 brought about theeconomic and politicalcollapse of Germany, whichled to the Great Depressionand made a Second World Warinevitable. As MarshallFerdinand Foch, declared ofVersailles: "This is not peace. It is an armistice for twentyyears! "

Communist EnslavementThe most significant politicalconsequence of WWI was theRevolution that transformedChristian Russia into theUnion of Soviet SocialistRepublics (USSR), whichchewed up over 50 million ofits citizens in the over 1 ,200concentration camps of theGulag Archipelago andmurdered another 66 million

people. 1 00,000 Churcheswere confiscated, ordestroyed, by the Communistsin Russia, including 48,000church buildings that weredestroyed.

Post-Christian PessimismIn the wake of the First WordWar, many came to speak ofa post-Christian era. As warsand revolutions threw the

entire world into disorder, pessimists and criticspredicted the imminentdisappearance of Christianity.Yet, against all odds, despitehaving being dealt with whatseemed like a death blow inits heartland, ProtestantChristians showed remarkablevitality.

Overcoming All OppositionAs Christians had overcomethe Roman Empire, theBarbarians and Vikinginvasions, the Arab invasions, the onslaught of the Mongols,

the Bubonic plague and theinvasions of the Turks, thenthe upheavals of the FrenchRevolution, Christians adaptedand overcame. Christianityexperienced dynamic growthin Africa, the Americas andAsia. Even in Eastern Europe,in some of the mostunexpected places, behindthe Iron Curtain, churchesmultiplied and Faith

deepened, despite the mostrelentless and anti-Christianpersecution by communistgovernments.

"Now these things became ourexamples, to the intent thatwe should not lust after evilthings as they also lusted. And do not become idolatersas were some of them… Nowall these things happened tothem as examples, and theywere written for ouradmonition.. ."1 Cor. 1 0:6-1 1

the poor and lots of hard work. However, what does it take todestroy civilisation?

"Confuse, Divide and Conquer"If we can be confused, thenwe can be divided andconquered. If we do notunderstand the nature of ourenemies: secular humanism, evolutionism, antinomianism, egalitarianism, radical Islamand Marxism, we will not beable to counter what we donot understand. We mustunderstand our enemies, andwe must recognise their tactics.

AntinomianismAntinomianism, the belief thatthe Law of God does not applytoday, and the just-believeminimalist gospel, arehopelessly inadequate inconveying the Biblical message.

EgalitarianismEgalitarianism is humanism. Itsays that everybody is equal. But everybody is not equal.Zebras are not equal to lions.Pigeons are not equal toeagles. We should honour ourfather and our mother and weshould respect our elders. "Theeye that mocks his father and scornsobedience to his mother, the ravensof the valley will peck it out and theyoung eagles will eat it. "

Proverbs 30:1 7

SocialismSecular humanist philosophersmay wish that everyone beforced to be equal, but it hasproven to be unworkable. AsWinston Churchill declared:"Socialism could only work in

Heaven, where it is not needed, orin hell, where they already have it! "

Margaret Thatcher observed:"The problem with socialism is thatsooner, or later, you run out ofothers people's money! "

Productivity RewardedThose who work hard are tobe rewarded. Those who areunprofitable servants will becast into outer darkness. Inthe parable of the Talents (Luke1 9:1 2-27), our Lord taught thatHe would generously rewardthose who were faithful andwise in serving Him, but theunproductive, He willcondemn. "For I say to you, thatto everyone who has will be given;and from him who does not have, even the little he has will be takenaway from him." Luke 1 9:27

Nobody is EqualThere is nothing egalitarianabout the Bible. Equalitybefore the Law is commanded(Numbers 1 5:1 5-1 6). However,no one can enforce equalityof effort, or equality of results.Nobody on earth is equal. Notin height, not in size, nor inlooks. People are not equal inintelligence, talents, motivation, energy, dependability, competence, trustworthiness, productivity, devotion, dedication, capabilities, or achievements.

Egalitarianism is UnbiblicalThe Ten Commandmentseffectively forbidsegalitarianism. We are not tocovet what others have. Weare not to steal others people’s

property. Nor are we todishonour our parents, or othersuperiors. Neither may we lie, gossip, or slander others.

Degrees of JudgementThe Lord made it clear thatthere would be differentdegrees of judgement. Hewarned that it would be betterfor the evil cities of Sodomand Gomorrah than forCapernaum, on the Day ofJudgement. How could thatbe? Because evil as Sodomand Gomorrah were, they neverhad a Bible, nor did theMessiah walk, and workmiracles in their streets. However, Capernaum had theLord Jesus Christ and Hisapostles working miracles, intheir streets: Yet they rejectedHis grace and mercy. TheApostle James warns: "Mybrethren, let not many of youbecome teachers, knowing that weshall receive a stricter judgement."

James 3:1

Much Given Much RequiredWe will be judged by the lightthat we have received. Towhom much is given, much isrequired. To whom much moreis given, much more isrequired. The Scriptures makeclear that there will be differentdegrees of rewards in Heaven."Each one's work will become clearfor the Day will declare it, becauseit will be revealed by fire and thefire will test each one's work, of whatsort it is. If anyone's work which hehas built on it endures, he willreceive a reward. If anyone's workis burned, he will suffer loss, buthe himself will be saved, yet so asthrough fire." 1 Cor. 3 :1 3-1 5

But Does God Not LoveEverybody Equally? To all this the egalitarianismobjects: "But, does not God loveeverybody - equally?" The answeris clearly, No! The Bible is quiteclear that there are actuallymany whom God hates. "Thesesix things the Lord hates, yes, seven are an abomination toHim: A proud look, a lyingtongue, hands that shedinnocent blood, a heart thatdevises wicked plans, feet thatare swift in running to evil, afalse witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discordamongst brethren." Proverbs6:1 6-1 9. The proud, liars, murderers, the wicked, thosewho rush to do evil, falsewitnesses, and those who sowdiscord amongst brethren, areamong those who God declaresthat He hates. God is a HolyGod. He is a God of justiceand a God of wrath. God willcall us to account for everyidle word ever spoken. OurCreator will judge us for ourbeliefs and for our behaviour.

Inequality in the BibleIn the Scriptures we read thatEnoch walked with God.Abraham was chosen to bethe Father of God's people.Abraham is described as thefriend of God. Moses spoketo God face to face. David isdescribed as "a man after God'sown heart! " Our Lord Jesusdescribed John the Baptistas the greatest man born ofwoman. John the Apostle isdescribed as "the disciple whomJesus loved."

who rule over you and besubmissive, for they watch out foryour souls as those who must givean account. Let them do so withjoy and not with grief, for thatwould be unprofitable for you."

Hebrews 1 3 :1 7

HMS BirkenheadOn 26 February 1 852, one ofthe worst naval disastersoccurred off the coast ofSouth Africa. Her Majesty'sShip Birkenhead struck a rockshelf off Danger Point, nearpresent day Hermanus, Eastof Cape Town, and began tosink rapidly. The Birkenheadwas carrying the 74thRegiment, made up mostly ofIrishmen and Scotsmen. ThisRegiment had distinguisheditself in conflicts throughoutthe Napoleonic Wars. Thatnight the Birkenhead had 638people on board, including1 38 naval officers and crewand 480 army officers andenlisted men under thecommand of LieutenantColonel Seton. Also on boardwere the wives and childrenof those members of themilitary who were married. The Birkenhead was an ironpaddle-wheel frigate of 1 ,400tonnes. Built in 1 845 andconverted into a troop shipin 1 848, the Birkenhead wasconsidered to be unsinkableand therefore had fewlifeboats on board.

Women & Children FirstThe sudden inrush of waterflooding the lower deckswamped the boiler fires andcaused the funnel to crushthe paddle-wheel life boat.Only two cutters and a gig

were able to be launched. Theorder went out: "Women andchildren first!" As the womenand children were rowed awayto safety, the horses were cutlose so they could attempt toswim for shore. Captain RobertSalmond gave the order to"Abandon ship!" adding "Everyman for himself!"

StandfastAt this Lieutenant ColonelSeton shouted: "Standfast!"He instructed the men toremain in their ranks and godown with the ship. Shouldthey attempt to make for thelifeboats they would overloadthese fragile vessels, swamping the lifeboats andendangering the lives of thewomen and children. The 480officers and men of the 74thRegiment stood in their rankson the sloping deck of thedoomed Birkenhead as thepipe band played. SingingChristian hymns, theseScottish and Irish soldierswent down with theBirkenhead into the sharkinfested waters of the ocean. No man attempted to swimto the heavily laden lifeboats,as they realised that anyattempt to do so coulddestabilise and swamp theseboats and risk the lives of thewomen and children.

Women & Children SavedThe Birkenhead sank within20 minutes. Not a women orchild was lost. 444 mendrowned. 1 93 people, including all the women andchildren survived. Some ofthe soldiers and sailorsmanaged to swim the 2 miles

(3 .2km) to shore. In thetossing seas that took over1 2 hours. Of the horses, 8made it safely to land.

The Birkenhead DrillRudyard Kipling immortalisedthe courage of these men withthe phrase: "Birkenhead Drill. "

"To take your chance in the thickof a rush, with firing all about,Is nothing so bad when you've coverto hand, and leave and liking to shout! But to stand and be still to theBirkenhead drillis a damn tough bullet to chew. And they done it, the Jollies, HerMajesty's Jollies- soldier and sailor too!Their work was done when it hadn'tbegun; they were younger than meand you;Their choice it was plain betweendrowning in heaps and beingmopped by the screw,So they stood and was still to theBirkenhead drill, soldier and sailor too."

The Birkenhead Drill becamesynonymous with: "Womenand children first!"

Titanic TragedyThe maritime disaster of theBirkenhead popularised theprotocol of "Women and childrenfirst. " This became standardevacuation procedure inmaritime disasters. When thetitanic sank, 1 5 April 1 91 2,1 ,503 passengers and crewdrowned. 651 people werelowered into lifeboats. 703survivors were picked up bythe Carpathian and weresaved, this included 54 whowent into the water and werealso saved.

Christian ChivalryFor every women who died on

the Titanic, 1 3 men died. Some of the richest men inthe world gave up their seatsto women and children, of allclasses, and went down withthe ship. The portrayal inHollywood's Titanic film of 3rdclass passengers beingprevented from reaching thelifeboats is fiction. There wasno class warfare evident inthe loading of the lifeboatswith women and children first. Some women chose to stayon board and go down withtheir husbands. But the plaindisparity of 1 3 times moremen drowning on the Titanic, for every women who was lost, makes clear that most menon the Titanic adhered to theBirkenhead Drill.

Modern EgalitarianismHowever, the consequencesof modern egalitarianism hasbeen seen in modern maritimedisasters, where thousandsof women and children havedied in horrific ferry sinking’sin Asia. Unlike the Titanic, most of the survivors of thesedisasters have been men!Interestingly enough, feministsand suffragettes in 1 91 2 arguethe case that the Titanicwomen were wrong to haveaccepted seats on thelifeboats from the men! Tothem the philosophy of menbeing protectors anddefenders of women was"offensive" and an obstacle totheir cause. "Votes or boats?"was the title of one prominentnewspaper article at the time. The answer to those whoasked Why, is found in theBible: "Husbands love your wives, just as Christ loved the Churchand gave Himself up for her…"

Ephesians 5:25

26 February 1 852HMS Birkenhead sanknear Hermanus.

1 5 April 1 91 2 the Titanic sank mid-Atlantic.

The Power of the Printed PageThe written Word can gowhere and when the humanvoice cannot.

Literature is the mostcost-effective way ofproclaiming the Gospel.

It has no passport or visaproblems.

It knows no fear.

It never loses its temper.

It never tires.

It is never discouraged.

It can tell its story over andover again.

It can be received, read andstudied, in secret.

It speaks without an accent.

It never compromises.

The written Word is morepermanent than the humanvoice.

A drop of ink may make amillion think!

God is not egalitarian. Nothingin nature is egalitarian. Eachone of us are called to befaithful to our duty.

"Corrupt and Conquer"Legalised pornography, thetoleration of prostitution, thepopularising of perversion, degenerate Hollywoodentertainment, corrupt andcorrode all of society.

Recognise their TacticsWe need to recognise the veryserious threats to Christiancivilisation: The threat ofconfuse, divide and conquer, corruptand conquer, guilt manipulation, the rewriting of history, thelawlessness of antinomianism, the poison of secularism, thecorruption of worldliness, thecovetousness of materialism, the disastrous consequencesof egalitarianism, the confusionof multiculturalism, the idolatryof the interfaith movement, and so many other seeds ofdestruction.

Termite StrategyEach of these ideologies worklike termites in a woodenhouse. While the outwardstructure may look unaffected, the termites can be eatingaway at the inside, rotting awayat the very foundations of thestructure, until it all collapses.A fresh coat of paint will notchange the fact that the beamsand pillars are rotten andcannot stand strain andpressure.

Rebuild CivilisationOur Christian Faith is thefoundation of civilisation andBiblical ethics are the mortar. To rebuild Christian civilisation,we must start with reformingour families. There is a battlefor the mind, a war beingwaged against marriage andagainst the family. Our childrenare at risk. Education hasbecome a battlefield. It is abattle for the hearts and mindsof the next generation.

Two Extremes to AvoidFacing the threats of secularhumanism, multiculturalmongrelisation, the New WorldOrder attempt to rebuild

Babylon, privileges for perverts, interbreeding and interfaith, many respond in one or twoextremes. There are those whowant to deny that any problemexists, and those who declarethat there is no hope!

No Problem! To try to deny reality and claimthat there is no problem, is tofail to recognise the depravityof man. Mankind is in rebellionto Almighty God. It isimpossible to violate God'sLaws without serious anddisastrous consequences.

No Hope!On the other hand, those whoclaim that there is no hope arefailing to take into account thesovereignty of God, the powerof the Word of God and thepower of prayer.

The Power of God"Greater is He who is in me,than him who is in the world."

1 John 4:4

"God has not given us a spiritof fear, but of power and of loveand of a sound mind."

2 Timothy 1 :1 7

"I can do all things throughChrist who strengthens me."

Philippians 4:1 3

"Submit to God, resist the deviland he will flee from you."

James 4:7

"We are more than conquerorsthrough Christ Jesus who lovedus." Romans 8:37

The Valley of Dry Bones"The hand of the Lord came uponme and brought me out in the Spiritof the Lord, and set me down in themidst of the valley; and it was fullof bones. . . and behold, there werevery many in the open valley; andindeed they were very dry. And Hesaid to me, 'Son of man, can thesebones live? ' So I answered, 'OLord God, You know. ' Again Hesaid to me, 'Prophesy to thesebones.. . hear the Word of theLord! . . . So I prophesied as I wascommanded; and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and suddenly arattling; and the bones cametogether, bone to bone. Indeed, asI looked, the sinews and the flesh

came upon them, and the skincovered them over; but there was nobreath in them. . . So I prophesiedas He commanded me, and breathcame into them, and they lived, and stood upon their feet, anexceedingly great army. ThenHe said to me, 'Son of man, thesebones are the whole house ofIsrael. '" Ezek. 37:1 -1 1

When last did God speakto you? What did He say?Did you obey? When man listens,God speaks.

All around we are surroundedwhat seems to be deadchurches and we areconfronted with lifelessnessand disorder. Our prayer is:"Will You not revive us againthat Your people may rejoicein You?" Psalm 85:6

When last did you experiencethe power of the Holy Spiritcoming upon you? What is the condition of yoursoul? Is your Faith dry?Do you have the Bible in yourhome?Do you have the Bible in yourhand?Do you have the Bible in yourhead?Do you have the Bible in yourheart?

"Faith comes from hearing andhearing by the Word of God."

Romans 1 0:1 7

Just as the dead Lazarus wasraised by the power of theWord of Jesus: "Lazarus! Comeforth! " So we can see the powerof the Word of God, as it isfaithfully proclaimed, bringingthe spiritually dead to life.

"The Gospel is the power ofGod for the Salvation ofeveryone who believes."

Romans 1 :1 6

Jesus said: "If anyone is thirsty,he should come unto Me anddrink and out of his innermostbeing will flow rivers of livingwaters." John 7:37

Reformation and RevivalWe must know the Truth in ourhead. We must believe theTruth in our heart. We mustlive the Truth in our hands. We need to be faithfulwatchmen on the wall, proclaiming the Word of Godin season and out of season, working for BiblicalReformation and praying forspiritual Revival. The Word ofGod assures us, that the wholeChurch will be revived andstand up, a vast army!

During my recent Mission toEngland, shocking news camethrough of the shoot-down ofAir Malaysia Flight 1 7 overDonetsk, Ukraine, killing all298 passengers on board. TheAir Malaysia shoot-down wasrightly condemned for theoutrage it is. Terrorism isterrorism and it should alwaysbe condemned and foughtagainst… whether fromcommunists, Muslim Jihadistsor IRA bombers.

Air Rhodesia's ViscountsHowever, I could not help butbe reminded of the deafeningsilence that followed theterrorist shoot-down of AirRhodesia Flight 825, ascheduled passenger flightthat was shot down by

Zimbabwe PeoplesRevolutionary Army (ZIRPA)insurgents on 3 September1 978, during the war againstRhodesia. The aircraft involveda Vickers Viscount named theHunyani, was flying the lastleg of Air Rhodesia's regularscheduled internal flight fromVictoria Falls to the capital,Salisbury, via the tourist resorttown of Kariba.

Bayonetting SurvivorsSoon after Flight 825 took off,

a group of ZIPRA guerrillasscored a direct hit on itsstarboard wing with a Soviet-made Strela 2 surface-to-airinfra-red homing missile, critically damaging the aircraftand forcing an emergencylanding. An attempted crashlanding in a field just West ofKaroi was foiled by an unseenditch, which caused theaircraft to cartwheel and breakup. Of the 52 passengers and4 crew, 38 died in this crash. The insurgents thenapproached the wreckage, rounded up the 1 0 survivorsthey could find andbayonetted, or shot, them.Eight other passengerssurvived because they hadgone to look for water andhelp.

Communists Claimed Creditfor the CarnageZIPRA leaderJoshua Nkomopublicly claimedresponsibility forshooting downthe Viscount onBBC television the sameevening. Five months later, inFebruary 1 979, the communistterrorists shot down anotherRhodesianViscount,

Flight 827, another civilianflight, in a similar atrocity.

A Deafening SilenceAt a memorial service held on8 September 1 978 for Flight825 's passengers and crew atSalisbury's Anglican Cathedral, about 2,000 people crowdedinside, with another 500standing on the steps andpavement. Many more werelistening to the service on theradio. Dean John de Costadelivered a sermon damningwhat he described as a"deafening silence" fromoverseas. "Nobody who holdssacred the dignity of human lifecan be anything but sickened atthe events attending the Viscount, "he said. "But are we deafened with

the voices of protest from nationswho call themselves civilised? Weare not! Like men in the story ofthe Good Samaritan, they pass byon the other side. . . "

International DisgraceIt is a matter of internationaldisgrace that the United Statesgovernment, the BritishForeign office, the EuropeanUnion, the United Nations, the Pope, the Archbishop ofCanterbury, and theOrganisation of African Unity, all failed to condemn theshooting down and murderingof innocent passengers onthese internal civilian flightsin Rhodesia. Sometimessilence is golden, other timesit is just plain yellow.

The Euthanasia ControversyDuring my recent Mission toEngland, there was muchdiscussion over the campaignto legalise euthanasia inBritain. Archbishop DesmondTutu's comments on howNelson Mandela had beendenied the right to die withdignity by keeping himartificially alive long after hewas brain dead, last year, wasgiven much coverage in Britainand used as a justification tolegalise euthanasia.

Targeting the Elderly, Weakand VulnerableIn South Africa, TarynHodgson of the ChristianAction Network, went onnational TV and made thepoint that there is a world ofdifference between allowinga person to die naturally, letting nature take its course, and making someone die, through, for example, a lethalinjection. The example wasgiven of how, in Belgium, euthanasia is meant to beonly carried out by a doctor, and with the patient's consent. However, more than 1 00nurses had admitted toresearchers that they hadtaken part in terminationswithout either the request, orconsent, from the patient, ortheir relatives! Investigationshave shown that nursesregularly go well beyond theirlegal role, and that one fifthof nurses in Belgium admittedbeing involved in the "assistedsuicide of a patient" eventhough half of them had noteven requested it!

Devaluing the Weak andElderlyDutch professor Theo Boer,a former euthanasia supporterin Holland, told the House ofLords, in London, that he hadbeen "terribly wrong" tosupport assisted suicide.Professor Boer declared thatthe very existence of aeuthanasia law turns assistedsuicide from a last resort into

a normal procedure. TheUtrecht University academicsaid that Holland is nowheading towards a record6,000 euthanasia deaths forthis year. Euthanasia devaluesthe weak and the elderly.Compassion and support areneeded for those who are ill,or depressed - not euthanasia!

When Doctors BecomeExecutionersIn the Soviet Union statedoctors regularly called introublesome pastors for a"routine check-up", only toreport later that day that theyhad "died! " Turning a healthprofessional, who should bededicated to saving lives, into

a taker of lives, effectively astate executioner, is a terribleperversion of the healingprofession.

"Keep yourself far from a falsematter; do not kill theinnocent and righteous. For Iwill not justify the wicked."
