Why We offer The CoMMunIon CuP aT Mass

All parishes of the Archdiocese are asked to offer the Communion cup to the faithful at Mass, especially at Sunday and feast day Masses. This policy follows the directive of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), which has been in place since 1970:

Holy Communion has a fuller form as a sign when it is distributed under both kinds. For in this form the sign of the Eucharistic banquet is more clearly evident and clear expression is given to the divine will by which the new and eternal Covenant is ratified in the Blood of the Lord…. (281)

The GIRM states that something is made “more clearly evident” through reception of Holy Communion under both kinds. So what is made clearer when we receive Christ’s Blood? We become what we eat - and drink If Mass were only about receiving grace, then partaking only of the Body of Christ would surely be sufficient. But Eucharist is about much more than that. It is also about the reason we receive grace - to go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Service includes sacrifice. The cup of salvation teaches us, and those around us, what sacrifice ultimately demands. It demands that we proclaim the death of the Lord by becoming one with Christ’s Body - and his Blood.

Stewardship . . . moving us closer to GodImagine that someone you love - spouse, parent, sibling - told you they were leaving; that they would be gone a long time and you couldn't go along. Your feelings would probably range from worry to frustration and maybe even anger. On this Sunday, we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord and we can imagine that the Apostles witnessing the event likely had all those feelings.Interestingly, our first reading from the Book of Acts has more details of the Ascension than our Gospel reading from Matthew, which is at the very end of the Book of Matthew. There is an element of the Ascension of Jesus that raises a question. Why did the Lord depart earth in that way? He could have simply vanished or left in any way imaginable. Most scholars believe that He wanted the Apostles, and He wanted us through their witness, to see Him leave in such a way that we would know He was physically gone. This is similar to your loved one driving away or getting on an airplane. The unfortunate part of physical departures is that after a while we start to talk about the person in the past tense. We use phrases such as "He was . . ". However, Jesus' last words are:“I am with you always until the end of the age.”He is there for us every day and every moment. Through the Holy Spirit He will provide us the strength to be good stewards. We must pray for that strength and then use it to do what is right. So next time you pray to the Lord, think about Him in the present tense because He is with you and in you and all around you.As it says in Hebrews Chapter 13 Verse 8, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever."

Please come to a Special Screening of the film, “40” Thursday, June 5, 7:00PM St. James Catholic Church, 415 Vincent Street, Redondo Beach

The Life, Justice and Peace Department in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles invites you to a screening of a very special Pro-Life film, “40”. St. James Parish in Redondo Beach is one of four parishes in the L.A. Archdiocese that will screen the film in June. It will take place on Thursday evening, June 5 from 7:00-9:00pM. Please plan on attending, and bring friends of any faith.

“40” looks at both sides of this heated issue and addresses some of the strongest arguments for the pro-choice position such as "it's my body, my choice" countered by pro-life answers from a wide array of pro-life leaders. “40” provides heartfelt testimonies from post-abortive women and men as well as women who once worked in Planned Parenthood clinics and several former abortion providers. “40” reports on the devastating effects of abortion in the Black and Hispanic communities… The film chronicles the lifesaving work of Pregnancy Centers who provide women with real options such as adoption. “40” features an inspirational look at the annual March for Life in Washington, D. C. and presents the youth as the generation that will end abortion. Beautifully shot and eloquently produced, it is a must see for all people, young and old.

Rev. Msgr. Joseph V. Brennan, Moderator of the Curia/Vicar General, Los Angeles Archdiocese

The documentary “40” presents the pro-life movement in the United States through the eyes, the words, and the experiences of its members. Engaging SpiritualityAre you deeply concerned about our world?

Are you thirsty for God and hungry for justice in the world?

Do you long to be contemplative and compassionate? If you are, the Social Justice and Outreach Commission invites you attend an information meeting about a program called Engaging Spirituality. The meeting will be Monday, June 2, in the Spirituality Center, 7:00-8:00pm.What is Engaging Spirituality? It is…• a spiritual journey for small groups that explores

the connection between prayerful presence and social ministry,

• a practical challenge to follow Christ into the broken heart of our world,

• an opportunity to apply contemplative wisdom to the needs and possibilities of our times.

“(Those) who attempt to act and do things for others or for the world without deepening (their) own self-understanding … and capacity to love, will not have anything to give others.” – Thomas MertonPlease RSVP to Tony Fadale, a . f a d a l e @ v e r i z o n . n e t or 310-542-9696

The ArT of SpiriTuAl DirecTionSpiritual direction is an ancient ministry, a unique one-to-one relationship in which a trained person assists another person in the search for an ever closer union of love with God. Directors listen carefully to the unfolding of directees' lives to help them discern the ways in which God is leading them. The practice of spiritual direction consists much more of "holy listening" rather than direction in the sense of offering guidance or direct advice.American Martyrs Church maintains a list of Certified Spiritual Directors who have received training, formation, and are members of Spiritual Directors International. They are committed to spiritual growth, both personally and with those they accompany on their journey. For more information and help finding a Certified Spiritual Director, contact Jenny Attanasio, 310-545-5651.

“Lord, you have passed over into new life, and you now invite us to pass over also. We pray that as we turn to you, our faces will never look back. Instead, like you, let us make heaven on earth in our hearts.” -- St. Bernard of Clairvaux 12th c.

The effect of God’s grace is to bring us back to our original and intended course, with a yearning for increased holiness and infinite goodness. God’s grace is experienced in many ways and times, and particularly in prayer. It is our experience of God’s grace that can then be reflected back to all of life. Please join us in prayer during this Easter season. We begin with a brief reading, followed by two periods of silent prayer, closing with “Our Father.” Newcomers are always welcome. Please join us once, often or always, for the Love of it! Can you recite the creed? Your child can! Volunteering in our after-school religious instruction programs is a great way to reconnect with your own Catholic faith. Your gifts will ensure our children and teens have a caring environment where they can explore their relationship with God, in the company of their friends. SAFEGUARD THE CHILDRENBy teaching “total body safety” we further efforts to stop child sexual abuseWhen teaching parents, stress that their child’s entire body is private and to be watchful of adults who might be “grooming” a child by constantly tickling, kissing, or hugging them. A child will often tell a parent he or she does not want to hug or kiss someone. Teach parents to listen to their children and respect their wishes! Stress to teens the importance of

“total body safety” in their relationships with others. Tell them, “Just because a person is a close friend or even a girlfriend or boyfriend, that does not give them a right to touch you in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable.” By teaching “total body safety” to adults, children, and young people, we are furthering our efforts to stop child sexual abuse and to make the world a safer place for all of God’s children. FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM: FREEDOM TO SERVE will take place from June 21 to July 4, 2014, a time when our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power - St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome.

The theme of this year's Fortnight will focus on the freedom to serve the poor and vulnerable in accord with human dignity and the Church's teaching.
