divine mercy
From the diary of St. Faustina Kowalski. On February 22, 1931, Jesus conveyed this message to St. Faustina; Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the signature: Jesus, I trust in You. I desire that this image be venerated, first in your chapel, and [then] throughout the world. (Notebook 1, 47)I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish. I also promise victory over [its] enemies already here on earth, especially at the hour of death. I myself will defend it on My own glory. (Notebook, 48)
Divine Mercy literature is available in the vestibule of the church.

Stewardship . . . moving us closer to GodIf you are old enough you may remember the television program "Who Do You Trust?" It was a game show where a one person in a couple would decide if they could answer a question or if they trusted that their partner could answer it. The host was a young Johnny Carson and it gave his career a big boost. Our readings this weekend emphasize the fact that we need to place our trust in God. Our first reading has Moses speaking to the Israelites about the issue of trust. Moses explains that they (and thus we) need to acknowledge that everything comes from God. Furthermore, we need to place our total trust in God and share our “first fruits” with the Lord which is a basic tenet of Stewardship. We may tend to say that we trust God, but do our lives and actions reflect that "first fruits" principle of Stewardship?St. Paul, in his letter to the Romans, our Second Reading, emphasizes the nature of trusting God. Paul says basically that believing is not enough; we must go deeper. Faith means we trust the Lord completely; we place all of our hopes on Him. We need to have total confidence in Jesus and place our salvation in His hands. “For one believes with the heart,” says Paul, meaning that mere intellectual agreement with the facts of the Cross and the Resurrection is not enough. It is in the Gospel from St. Luke that we find the ultimate trust in God. The devil presents three temptations to Jesus much
like we face temptations on a daily basis. He resisted them because He placed His total trust in God. We are called to have that same kind of trust. In this Gospel we are told that Jesus fasted and He is hungry, but He is filled with the Spirit and that strengthens Him to resist the temptations.
We sometimes have the opposite experience — our stomachs may be full but we have empty spirits. As we begin Lent let us empty ourselves and allow our hearts and souls to be filled with the Spirit. With God’s help we can move a little closer to the Lord and develop that deeper relationship that we all need.
Please contact us, S t e w a r d s h i p @ A m e r i c a n M a r t y r s . o r g with questions or comments on this article or about Stewardship.

stephen ministry This year for lent, do something for yourself There are times in life when we are led out into the desert. But sometimes it is a desert of pain and isolation. Please remember that our community has people here to assist you during the challenging times of normal life. A Stephen Minister can be a confidential companion to journey with you from your place of pain to a place of healing. Stephen Ministers can help when you are experiencing a difficult time and could use someone to talk to. Leave a message on our Stephen Ministry confidential phone line, 310-545-8244, and Deacon Dick and Patti Williams will meet with you to explore whether a Stephen Minister may be a good fit to help you!

resPect liFe Ministry What the Catholic Church Teaches About the End of Life
“Medical advances can help save lives. They can also present terminally ill patients and their loved ones with difficult choices at the end of life. Catholic teaching gives patients and their families principles for making decisions about initiating or continuing medical treatments.‘But…normally one is held to use only ordinary means…according to the circumstances of persons, places, times, and culture – that is to say, means that do not involve any grave burden for oneself or another.’ Pope Paul XII
Ordinary and Extraordinary – Treatments that offer reasonable hope of benefit that may be obtained without excessive pain, expense or burden are considered ordinary means. Treatments that do not offer reasonable hope of benefit and cannot be obtained without excessive pain, expense or burden are considered extraordinary means. Respecting the sacredness of life, each person decides the benefits and burdens of treatment according to their own physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health at the time of the decision. When confronted with highly emotional life-and-death decisions, Catholics should gather all the facts, consult with their physician and family, reflect on Catholic teaching, and pray.‘We are called to a fullness of life which far exceeds the dimensions of our earthly existence…because it consists in sharing the very life of God.’ Pope John Paul II, Evangelium VitaeThe above guidelines are provided by the California Catholic Conference. w w w. c a c a t h o l i c . o r g For information about the Respect Life Ministry, contact Steve Perry 818-800-5653 | r e s p e c t l i f e @ A m e r i c a n M a r t y r s . o r g.

Each of us longs for belonging. Our basic search is what drives our lives. Jesus very clearly, in simple terms, defines belonging, invites us to him, and shows us the way. For these evenings during Lent, we are invited to pause in prayer to examine our lives more deeply in the light of God’s unfailing grace. The intent is to provide a thorough, personal examination of conscience in one’s own time, with the structured support of a weekly prayer group, leading to a deeper commitment to Christ within and beyond my faith community. Join us for two 20 minute periods of silent prayer, closing with “Our Father.” At the close of the hour, there will be reflection questions with brief instructions for personal meditation. Handouts available for missed sessions.Newcomers are always welcome. Join us once, often or always, for the Love of it! For information, call Donna Ennis, 310-941-1349.
“There is a way to examine yourself and find within you the source of peace and light, where before only shadows have been seen. This examination grants the assurance of peace and serenity to you and to those who are around you, by grace.” Mother Marie des Douleurs, Benedictine Sisters of Jesus Crucified
silent meditAtion - the prAyer oF the heArt Pope Francis has identified the season of Lent in this Jubilee Year of Mercy as “a privileged moment to celebrate and experience God’s mercy,” and as a very good time for us to meditate on Sacred Scripture and “rediscover the merciful face of the Father.” (The Face of Mercy, 17)During the Fridays of Lent join us for 30 minutes of Silent Meditation and contemplate the merciful love of the Father. God wants us to come to him with our joys and our sorrows; to let him shine his light into our darkness; to let him love us and make us whole; to lay down at the foot of the cross all that he wishes to transform in our lives so that we are prepared for the cross of Good Friday, and the resurrection of new life with and through Jesus. Meditation is simply being still and silent in the loving presence of God. Simple, yes. Easy, no. We are not used to inaction and interior quiet. In this world of constant information and doing instead of being we need to create sacred space within our day and within our heart to be quiet in the Lord. It is in the silence that we come to know his love for us. Merciful Jesus, I Trust in You.Join us Friday mornings in the Spirituality Center, St. Joseph’s Chapel (use Pacific Avenue entrance.)11:15 – 11:30am Optional: Time for Questions/Instruction 11:30 – 11:55am Silent Meditation 11:55 – 12:00pm Closing PrayerAll are welcome! Do you know these RCIA terms?RCIA: Rite of Christian Initiation of AdultsCatechumen: Term reserved for the unbaptized. After the Rite of Election they will be known as the “Elect.”Candidate for Full Communion: An individual who has already been baptized in another church, and is seeking full reception (Eucharist and Confirmation.)Candidate for Full Initiation: An individual who was baptized Catholic, but needs the Sacrament of Confirmation to complete their initiation. This weekend the members of RCIA will celebrate the Rite of Election, which coincides with the opening of Lent. It also marks the beginning of the final, more intense preparation
for sacraments of initiation. This step in the RCIA process is called ‘election’ because the acceptance made by the Church is founded on the election by God, in whose name the Church acts. It is our duty, as the entire Church, to surround our RCIA “elect” and “candidates” with prayer, so that we all accompany and lead them to encounter Christ.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Electronic dating violence is prevalent among teensTeenagers do a lot of communicating online and via mobile devices through social media and texting. Entire relationships can be formed over the internet and messaging, and the private nature of these relationships may make it easy to hide signs of abuse and violence. Dating violence means any act of mental, emotional or physical aggression among a couple sharing an intimate relationship. Online, these acts are harder to pinpoint, especially for adult outsiders whose children may be victims of emotional dating abuse. Ask your teens about their relationships, and how their partners treat them online and in person. American Martyrs | A Designated Pilgrimage Church for the Year of Mercy
During the 40 days of LENT, You pray for me, I pray for you. We pray for one another”
Each week we bring to Mass the people in our lives - friends, neighbors and family - who are in need of our prayers. People often ask us to pray for them, or we are simply aware of someone or some event which needs our prayer. We invite you to place prayer intentions in the prayer bowl in the church (please make it anonymous and omit names). Use the paper provided next to the prayer bowl and take a petition with you to keep in your prayer during the week.Any special intentions or prayer requests may still be written in the Book of Special Intentions located at the Shrine of the Blessed Mother.
You pray for me,
I pray for you.
We pray for one another.
