Building Together the “LEGACY” of Holy Family - The Journey of our Faith"You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your

strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself."

Building Together the “LEGACY” of Holy Family - The Journey of our Faith

Over the years an attractive interpretation of the Martha-Mary scene has grown. It contrasts two styles of life within Christianity: the active and the contemplative. And it has Jesus playing down the active life, extolling the contemplative. The interpretation is that, if your "thing" is action—whether feeding the hungry or preaching to a congregation – watch out! The perfect Christian way is contemplation, sitting at the feet of the Lord, lost in admiration, all lost in wonder.

Not quite accurate. The scene in Martha's house is far richer than a contrast between Carmelites behind a grill and Jesuits running colleges, universities and high schools, between a mother slaving over a hot stove and her sister praying before the Blessed Sacrament, between a Trappist monk silent in the fields and a Thunderbird pilot breaking the sound barrier. So, a word on the Gospel, then a word on you and me.

First, the Gospel passage. Several points in that short passage merit mention.

1) Luke shows us a woman sitting as a disciple at Jesus' feet, Jesus encouraging a woman to learn from him. In three ways Jesus acts contrary to Jewish cultural norms that have to do with women. He is alone with women who are not related to him; a woman serves him; and Jesus is teaching a woman in her own home.

2) It seems at first glance as if Jesus is reassuring Martha. She has complained to him, "Aren't you concerned that my sister has left me alone to do all the serving? Tell her, please, to come and lend me a hand" (Lk 10:40). Jesus replies, "There is need of only one thing" (v. 42)—as if he were saying, "Never mind preparing a seven-course belly-stretcher. One dish will do." But, no – Jesus' remark goes far deeper. The "one thing necessary" has nothing to do with dinner. The "one thing necessary" is listening to God's word, to God speaking. It recalls an earlier observation of Jesus, when the crowds were pressing on him, and his mother and relatives could not reach him because of the crowds. Someone cries out, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you." His response? "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it" (Lk 8:20—21).

Martha wanted to honor Jesus with an elaborate meal, but Jesus reminds her that it is more important to listen to what he has to say. The proper "service" of Jesus is attention to his instruction, not an elaborate provision for his physical needs…

3) See how gently Jesus chides Martha: "Martha,

Martha…" Not a harsh rebuke. Her cooking and serving are not out of place; Jesus does not reject it. His is a soft reminder that service which forgets to listen is less than what it ought to be; listening to Jesus' word is "the better portion," "the best part" (v. 42); this is the lasting "good" that will never be taken away from the listener. From perfect hostess to perfect disciple.

Second, a word on you and me. Like most Americans, our life is active, at times feverish. It has to be, if only because we want to serve our nearest and dearest, serve our wider community, the brothers and sisters who depend on us for ever so many needs, from food to keep them from starving to defense against hostile countries and terrorists.

What Jesus puts before us is not a harsh either/or: either an active existence that is somehow of danger to our spiritual life, or retirement to a monastery. No. The danger is not in serving. The danger is a service that has no time for listening—for listening to what God might be saying to us. Saying to us how, when, where? • In the quiet of our hearts, whenever Jesus says to us what

he said to his disciples when they were so busy they had no time even to eat: "Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while" (Mk 6:31).

• During the Eucharistic liturgy, when the Word of God is proclaimed to us and the body of Christ rests on our hands, on our lips, in our bodies.

• Through our histories: I mean the things good and bad that happen to us, the people of all kinds we meet each day, the events that unroll from the struggles throughout the world and evn the recession in our own dear land.

What do they say to us? What do they tell us about God, about ourselves, about the way God wants us to live?

Today's Gospel is addressed to Christians who are expected to be, in a traditional phrase, "contemplatives in action." In action: not retiring from the world—actively engaged in the world, but not thoughtlessly. Contemplatives: I mean men and women who are ceaselessly taking a long loving look at what is real. And, what is real is at the feet of Jesus. For only at the feet of Jesus, only in contemplation, does our action become Christ-like.

Pray, then, that we can link both Martha and Mary in our lives – service indeed, but service that is fed by the words that fall from the lips of our Lord. This is the "good" life, this the life that, please God, will never be taken from us.

"You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." Luke 10: 27

In the Mediterranean culture of the time of Jesus, villages were tight, close-knit, small communities. The understanding of what constituted a “neighbor” would not have been someone who lived beyond the boundaries of a person’s village. Through the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus pointed out that each of us must become a neighbor to anyone who is in need.

It is through several ministries within Holy Family that we reach out to all who come to us in need. Our Catholic Ladies Relief Society provides food for the hungry Monday through Friday. Aware that the homeless rarely have the ability to cook their meals, they provide special bags of food for them that don’t require cooking. Our St. Vincent de Paul conference reaches out daily to those in need, helping them to keep their power on and/or doing what they can to prevent them from becoming homeless. Our Wednesday night dinner crew provides an outstanding dinner each week for those in need who would like to enjoy a warm, home cooked meal. In the wintertime, we collaborate with Citrus Heights HART to provide a hot meal and a safe, warm, dry place for the homeless to sleep for a week (the winter sanctuary program is actually 8+ weeks long).

These are only a few of examples of how we reach out to those in need, and we can provide this assistance because of your support of these ministries. But it raises the question of how well are we taking care of ourselves? What are we doing to ensure the health and vitality of Holy Family so that we can continue being a source of hope for those in need? Will we still be here 70 years from now?

It seems to be a sad reality that many of us only need or want the church, when we want it:• To celebrate the sacraments when we desire to receive them• To get needed documentation for a Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation, a wedding, etc.• To receive the proper formation when needed in preparation for the reception of a sacrament• For counsel and guidance as we deal with the death of a loved one• And, attendance at mass when it fits into our schedule

The church is expected to be here when we need it, and often many are complacent or even offended when asked to financially support the church in its need.

As a family is a domestic “church” and a small community, it is the family, even despite its short comings, that makes a house a home. Our parish community is also a family, dependent on all of us for support – in good times and in bad. Despite our dysfunction, each of us has the ability to make this church a temple of God’s love and compassion — God’s home…our home.

The needs of the church continue to grow, while our collections continue to drop. Please take a moment to look at our stewardship corner. As we begin this new fiscal year, we are starting out in the red, almost $700 below our weekly requirement of $11,000.

In this column we have documented over the last year and a half how much our Church is deteriorating, and less than 25% of our families have taken this concern seriously enough to make a commitment to resolve it.

70 years ago, a beautiful vision was born for the Catholic Church in Citrus Heights. Today, that vision lives on as we work together to maintain and improve the vision that began 7 decades ago. If we truly want to remain a beacon of hope for those who need to be embraced in the compassionate care of Christ – and at one time or another this will include each of us – we all need to come together as a community, as a family, to support our home and especially our efforts to repair and renovate our church.

Jesus asked the lawyer how he read the law. The lawyer responded, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself."

Jesus told him he had answered correctly, “Do this and you will live.” By virtue of our baptism, we have a responsibility to put our faith and our words into action through our works. The lawyer knew the law – he needed to practice it as well, and so must we.

Breaking Open the Word

– 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time –Readings: Genesis 18:1-10 • Psalm 15:2-5 • Colossians 1:24-28 • Luke 10:38-42

OVERVIEW: The obvious connection between the Old Testament reading this week and the Gospel readings deals with hospitality. But there’s more to it than that, as we shall see. In the first reading three strangers arrive at Abraham’s tent. In customary Middle Eastern fashion Abraham invites them in, washes their feet and has a sumptuous meal prepared for them. Christian tradition has seen in this reading an “icon” of the Trinity for as the narrative describes it, “The LORD appeared to Abraham” in the guise of three men. (The famous Russian icon composed by Andrei Rublev depicts this scene to illuminate the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity). Notice how the reading goes back and forth between the singular and the plural. Through these angelic visitors the LORD reveals his plan to Abraham, saying that his wife Sarah will give birth to a son, even in her old age. Abraham and Sarah have key roles to play in God’s plan of salvation although they can only see a small part of it. In the second reading St. Paul explains his role as a minister of Christ, which is “to bring to completion for you the word of God: the mystery hidden from ages and from generations past.” He does this, in part, by “filling up [in his flesh] what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ” Paul does not mean to suggest that there is anything lacking in terms of Christ’s atoning sacrifice, but rather that Paul’s suffering plays a part in God’s plan by enabling him to bear witness to Christ through his suffering. The Church, which is the body of Christ, is destined to suffer with Christ, as he said “If they persecuted me, they will persecute you.” (John 15:20). In the gospel reading, Martha and Mary welcome the Lord into their home. The difference, of course, is that Martha is “anxious and worried” about serving while Mary is commended for having “chosen the better part.” It’s worth noting that this reading follows the story of the Good Samaritan, which stressed the importance of active service. Placed here, the story of Martha and Mary balances the parable of the Good Samaritan by stressing the importance of faith and of listening to God. Taken together the two stories illustrate the Great Commandment: to love God, and love one’s neighbor.

Key verse: “There is need of only one thing.” (Lk. 10:42)

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH: “What is contemplative prayer? St. Teresa answers: ‘Contemplative prayer in my opinion is nothing else than a close sharing between friends; it means taking time frequently to be alone with him who we know loves us.’ …. Contemplative prayer is the simple expression of the mystery of prayer. It is a gaze of faith fixed on Jesus, attentiveness to the Word of God, a silent love.” [2709; 2724]

POPE FRANCIS: “We can walk as much as we want, we can build many things, but if we do not profess Jesus Christ, things go wrong. We may become a charitable NGO, but not the Church, the Bride of the Lord. …. My wish is that all of us, after these days of grace, will have the courage, yes, the courage, to walk in the presence of the Lord, with the Lord’s Cross; to build the Church on the Lord’s blood which was poured out on the Cross; and to profess the one glory: Christ crucified. And in this way, the Church will go forward. [Inaugural homily to Cardinal electors, March 14, 2013)

LIFE APPLICATION: In preparing a meal for the Lord, Martha was performing very important work of mercy: feeding the hungry. But her preoccupation with duty, important as it was, interfered with the much more important task of being still and listening to the Lord. Mary, on the other hand, experienced deep communion with God, even though she wasn’t “doing” anything. One of the principle aims of Vatican II’s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy was the “fully conscious and active participation” of the people at Mass. But ‘active participation’ doesn’t necessarily mean we always have to be “doing something”. Rather, it refers to an interior disposition in which each of us participates “fully and consciously” in the Paschal Mystery. Corporal works of mercy are an essential and necessary part of the Christian life. They are the fruit of our relationship with Christ, an outgrowth of our having sat ‘at the feet of Jesus.’ This week’s readings, however, remind us that cultivating our relationship with the Lord is primary. Otherwise, as the Holy Father cautioned, the Church is no more than a “charitable NGO.”
