    Business Coursework

What has been the most important enterprise skill required by

the owner of a local business?

    Pizzeria Pappagone

The business I have chosen is Pizzeria Pappagone. This business was co-

founded by two friends both called Marco and started on October 4th 1!.

    Pizzeria Pappagone has been

bloo"ing success and has had a

    large a"ount of success and

    the business is still growing.

    Originally# it was a restaurant

and pizzeria but in $%%$ they

    realised that the business was

growing rapidly as they werereceiving "ore custo"ers and

    the size of their business

location was too s"all so they

    decided to ta&e a ris& and

bought the location ne't door to their restaurant and turned it into a bar

where people could sit down and en(oy a coc&tail or a bottle of wine whilst

    waiting for their food.

    Where is Pizzeria Pappagone?

Pizzeria Pappagone is an independent business located a busy high road

in 0insbury Par& at 1)1 *troud +reen ,oad. The neighbouring business

co"petitors is a Porchetta Pizzeria which is a ta&e away pizza shop.

What enterprise skills are used in Pizzeria Pappagone?

    • Take risks- Ta&ing calculated ris&s can push your business forwardas you ai" to lose it all to have it all as theres always a chance that

custo"ers "ay re(ect the product or service and that a loss will be

"ade (ust to ris& a product success. If you ta&e a ris there is a

possibility that you could either gain or lose custo"ers2 this "eans

your co"pany is at ris& of receiving a bad na"e as well as the

chance of receiving a good na"e. The cofounders of pizzeria too& a

ris& by buying another location for their business (ust so that

custo"ers could go to the bar whilst they were waiting for their

food. This is because# there was no guarantee that the custo"ers

actually wanted to go to the bar whilst they waited. 3ad the ris& notbeen a successful one# the co"pany would have paid out "ore

"oney than they would have received# this could have led to loss of

prot and it could also have led to the co"pany being below the

    brea&-even point. uc&ily for pizzeria# the ris& that the co-founders

had ta&en paid o5 as they gained "ore custo"ers and the business

    grew.

    • Showing initiatie- This is useful in a business as successful

entrepreneurs have to be forward thin&ers as they have to ta&e a

leading step to "a&e a business "ore successful. *howing initiative

lin&s to ta&ing ris&s as using your initiative triggers innovation and a

ris& has to be ta&en in order to produce or "anufacture the

products# this is because there is no guarantee that the custo"ers

will li&e it# the product could either bloo" or be in decline. In ter"s

of Pizzeria Pappagone# they showed initiative by thin&ing ahead and

creating the bar before the custo"ers started to co"plain and

perceive the unco"fortable# cra"ped wait for their pizza6s as bad

custo"er service# they also used their initiative. *howing initiative

can also be lin&ed with creative thin&ing as the pizzeria

de"onstrated when they added di5erent recipes in their pizzas.

That shows that they used their initiative as they realised that they

have to thin& creatively by adding "ore recipes so that they can

gain "ore custo"ers whilst &eeping the interest of their initial

    custo"ers.

     7s a result of the co-founders thin&ing ahead and also thin&

creatively# Pizzeria Pappagone will "ost li&ely gain "ore custo"ers

as the neighbouring co"petitors haven6t thought creatively.

Thin&ing creatively will allow the pizzeria to di5erentiate itself fro"

    3/24

its co"petitors2 this could lead to repeat purchase and custo"er

    loyalty.

  • 8/17/2019 BUSINESS CW1.docx

    4/24

    • !eadership- 85ective leadership s&ills are essential in order to

achieve goals in a business. To be successful2 leaders "ust be able

to inspire# "otivate and direct their tea". eadership related to the

pizzeria as the co-founders would have to lead and "anage theire"ployees in order to run a successful business. The co-founders

would also have to "otivate their e"ployees so that they6re

enthusiastic and can provide the custo"ers with good custo"er

service. The co-founders de"onstrating good leadership would also

help a business to be successful as they would be able to reduce

variation in process perfor"ance by ensuring their people &now

what to do and how to do it. Therefore# the business has security. If

a business didn6t have a leader there would not be a lot of control

and decision "a&ing wouldn6t be i""inent. This "ay also cause

custo"ers to lose faith in the business.

    • 9nderta&ing new ventures and spotting opportunities- This is also an

i"portant enterprise s&ill to have and it is so"ething that the co-

founders of the pizzeria have de"onstrated. This has been

de"onstrated in the co-founders ability to spot that there was a gap

in the "ar&et for a pizzeria with a bar as the custo"ers have

responded well to it and it is contributing to the pizzerias bloo"ing

success. The co-founders of the pizzeria also undertoo& the venture

of realising that there is a gap in the "ar&et for Italian cuisine.

The transcript of the interiew with a co"founder of Pizzeria

    Pappagone #$arco%

&What gae you the idea of opening up a Pizzeria Pappagone?'

Marco and I used to "a&e fresh pizzas at ho"e when we were younger and our

fa"ilies loved it. I realised that there was only one local pizzeria in this area at

the ti"e# this pizzeria charged high prices but still gained a lot of custo"ers as

there was no co"petition# but it didn6t lose "oney because pizza was a local

favourite. 7s I analysed the eating habits and ages that eat pizza "ost and it was

under ): which there are a lot of in this area and I realised that setting up a

business li&e this would be a success as it has been.

&What enterprise skill would you consider to be the mostimportant in relation to the success your business so far and

    why?'

;The enterprise s&ill that is considered to be "ost i"portant is to thin&

creatively. This is because we gain "ore custo"ers than the local businesses as

they havent though as creatively as Pizzeria Pappagone. 7s our custo"ers have

noticed this it has lead to "any custo"ers co"ing bac& and introducing new

    people to our business.;

&(ow long after the opening of your )rst shop did you decide it

would be a good idea to undertake a new enture and open the

    bar?'

The custo"ers of Pizzeria Pappagone were as&ed how long they had

    Pappagone.

This re=ects the leadership of the co-founders as they were able to

The custo"ers were then as&ed if they were happy with the ?uality of the

Despite the 1%> of the custo"ers who answered the ?uestionnaire# it is

The custo"ers were then as&ed if they feel that there is a di5erence

The use of creative thin&ing and underta&ing new ventures by the co-

there was a di5erence between Pizzeria Pappagone and their co"petitors.

The creativity in the "enu and the creativity of the ideas in the restaurant

created a barrier or a level between Pizzeria Pappagone and its

7nother possible factor that "ay have separated the Pizzeria fro" itsco"petitors is the custo"er service as good custo"er service "a&es the

The custo"ers were then as&ed if they were happy with the prices

that live in the area of the business as %> agreed that they were happy

    with the prices.

The co-founders of the Pizzeria clearly used initiative as they understood

that they would need to co"e up with prices that the custo"ers in the

area would be able to a5ord as if they cannot a5ord the prices# they

wouldn6t be able to shop there. That could lead to the business going into
