COMMENTS FROM THE MAYORBy Charles Jessup

Lawsuit Against City Dismissed Last year, 46 General Law cities like Meadows Place, received a letter from a group demanding a repeal of Sex Offender Residency Restriction ordinances. They threatened a lawsuit against any city that did not do so - Meadows Place was one of those cities. Many chose to repeal their ordinances. Meadows Place did not.

On January 20th, 2016, we held a public discussion on that challenge to our Sex Offender Ordinance. City Hall was packed. Everyone was given an opportunity to speak and ask questions. Though this is an emotional subject, the demeanor in the room never got ugly, only determined. At the end of a long evening, 100% of our residents raised their hands in support of our ordinance so your Mayor, Council and Legal Counsel, Grady Randle declared their intent to fight the suit.

The City of Meadows Place is pleased to announce that thanks to the efforts of the Grady Randle Law Firm, Meadows Place Prosecutor Brian Middleton, Chief of Police Gary Stewart, Lt. Richard Simmons and with support of the residents of Meadows Place, the case was thrown out.

This may or may not not be over, but for now we are in good legal standing. Thank You to everyone who played a role, especially those who stood firm that night in City Hall. Your city leaders have been, and will continue to seek a legislative solution to this situation. In the interim, Meadows Place Police Department will aggressively enforce our Sex Offender Residency Restrictions.

Monarch Gateway Meadows Place has been working with Monarch Gateway for over a year to restore 13 acres back to native prairie. This project will support migrating monarch butterflies and pollinators. We are very excited about this project as the benefit will be tremendous and we are the HOST city!

Did You Know... D'Anne & Doug McGee want to thank everyone for

their prayers & support of their son Matthew who is presently deployed on the USS Carl

Vinson off the Korea peninsula. Matt was just awarded his Surface Warfare Badge last week. Thank you Matthew for your service. Meadows Place is proud of all our men and women who are serving in our military as evidenced by the Meadows Place Hall of Heroes plaques displayed on the wall at City Hall. If you have a son or daughter serving and do NOT have a plaque, please Contact City Hall to find out how to get one. Did You Know... Permann’s Cider Company gave our Parks Department a donation in appreciation of being invited to be a part of our very successful Music Memories Series last month. A

great time. Thank You Permann’s Did You Know... the official City of Meadows Place Facebook page had almost 5,000 people see the “Croc in the Classroom” video posting. To view this and the other 2017 videos go to our website, click the YouTube icon and pick a

clip to watch or, watch them all! They are great fun and will bring a smile to your face. Did You Know... Cathy Zepeda, a Meadows Place resident, was Coach of the Year for Special Olympics Area 22. When not working as an assistant coach for FBISD, Cathy coaches softball, basketball, volleyball and track & field with the ARC of Fort Bend and will be taking 24 athletes to the State meet in Arlington Memorial Day weekend.. "It's my passion and a blessing to be able to coach such amazing young men and women." Cathy is just one of the many outstanding people that help make Meadows Place…Your Place for Life! Did You Know... Meadows Place resident John Pizzitola was appointed as the first Associate Judge for the City of Meadows Place in January 1984. He served with honor, putting the needs of this city above his own so the Mayor and

City Council of Meadows Place, proclaimed May 24, 2017, as John Pizzitola Day in the City of Meadows Place. Congratulations Judge Pizzitola, and Thank You for your years of dedication to the City of Meadows Place. Did You Know... your Mayor had the privilege of sitting with Meadows Elementary Principal Michele Labus, Asst. Principal, Jocelyn Jackson and VIPS Campus Coordinator Nicole Nathen as they watched Arlander Harrison-Minx be recognized at the Meadows Elementary VIP of the Year. Congratulations Arlander and everyone at Meadows Elementary for another great year. Thank You for all you do! Did You Know... Meadows Place has some new huge photo ads on the Sterling McCall Nissan sign. Check them out. Did You Know... Meadows Place has had $491,825.00 worth of permitted improvement in remodels, additions, and pools in the last 12 months. This doesn’t even include driveways, roofs, etc., and is more proof that Meadows Place is investing in itself. Before you start a project, we ask that you check the website or contact City Hall if you have any questions or concerns about what needs to be done to meet statuary requirements. We will do our best to help you and it is a lot better to figure these things out before you sign on the dotted line. Did You Know... We want all the residents to have some background and history of the Community Garden so next month we will have a page on the website dedicated to the Meadows Place Community Garden. In the meantime, you are all invited to participate. It is your garden to plant, water, weed, harvest, and enjoy. For more information Contact Jack Shaw or Bob Dybala thru their Meadows Place Community Garden Facebook Page. Did You Know... To get something in Did You Know, drop us a note at City Hall or email: [email protected].

Did You Know?...

Did You Know... Meadows Elementary 5th graders got to visit the new dinosaur exhibit at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. 93 kids were chaperoned by caring parents, teachers and aides. They were very well behaved and the trip went off without a hitch. Our neighbor Houston has the largest dinosaur exhibit in the country… Larger than NY or the Smithsonian!!! One of the parents, Colene Cabezas, said the bones are not exhibited in the same old way but have the predators and their prey displayed in a more real life scenario - chasing, chomping, and scrambling to escape. Sounds exciting-And educational! Lunch in the park, a tour of the Japanese garden then back to beautiful Meadows Place…Your Place for Life!

By Chief Gary Stewart

(Comments From The Mayor continued from page 1)

The restoration will provide food sources that are imperative to their survival and will provide educational opportunities for Meadows Elementary, residents and visitors. The native prairie restoration will provide a beautiful backdrop to Meadows Place while reducing expenses by omitting mowing. We had a tremendous turnout for the Ribbon Cutting so check the City of Meadows Place website to see some photos. If you wish to help or get involved, contact our Parks Department. This is big for Meadow Place as the Brazos River Prairie Chapter of Quail Forever joined the project and will be using Meadows Place as a Statewide example of what can happen if you want it to. Projects like this ensure Meadows Place will always be Your Place for Life!

Roofing Standards Back in October, your city council unanimously approved raising the roofing standards in Meadows Place. Now all shingle roofs must meet these standards. We have done a great job ensuring compliance but we have had problems with two roofers trying to put on shingles that did not meet our new upgraded standards. Sadly, it cost them a lot of money and caused problems for the homeowners. Please, if you are having a roof put on, or doing some remodeling, make sure your contractor is registered to work in Meadows Place, is aware of our standards and pulls the required permits. It will be better for everyone. Thank You.

Code Enforcement

It’s That Time of Year Again!

Our trees are GROWING! The problem is that now the limbs are hanging well

below our ordinance height of 16’ over the street, and 10’ over sidewalks.

Trees are a valuable asset to properties and the environment. In many parts of the city, tree canopy provides shade and significantly reduces utility bills. Mature healthy trees can increase a property’s value by as much as 25 percent.

Trees must be properly maintained and pruned for the health of the tree as well as for public safety. The City’s tree trimming ordinance was put in place to ensure that large vehicles such as fire trucks, school buses, ambulances, and garbage trucks are able to navigate and operate safely, and to allow pedestrians to walk on the sidewalks without veering out into the roadway to avoid limbs.

There are many resources for information on pruning trees. Online resources include:

• International Society of Arboriculture www.treesaregood.com

• Fort Bend Master Gardeners www.fbmg.com

• The National Arbor Day Foundation www.arborday.org

• Texas A&M University www.aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu

• Houston Area Urban Forestry Council www.haufc.org

Remember:Permits are required for Roofing, Plumbing, Electrical and HVAC work, as well as several other types of work.

Please contact our Permit Clerk, Isela Hernandez @ 281-983-2950, and make sure that you and you contractor get the proper permits. The fines for un-permitted work are steep!

Please remember, I can’t see everything. If you don’t let me know what is happening and what is important to you, I can’t make it a priority.

Public WorksFlood Insurance

As we come upon a new Hurricane Season it’s important to know that flood insurance is available to everyone. Your home

does not have to be within a designated flood zone to purchase flood insurance. Every year Fort Bend County and Harris County experience heavy flooding along its Bayou’s during heavy rain falls. The last two years we’ve seen Keegan’s Bayou leave its banks and

flood West Belfort, the result leaves W. Belfort area unpassable for motorist for several hours. During some of these heavy rainfalls we have experienced street flooding here in Meadows Place and the overflow from Keegan’s Bayou has left our tributary bayou near it banks in 2015 and 2016.

Flood Insurance is not covered under regular home insurance and may not be needed depending on where you live. However, we encourage our homeowners and tenants to do some research as most new flood insurance policies take 30 days to become effective. Please visit the web sites links below if more information is needed.

Classified & AdvertisingAnyone wishing to place an ad in the newsletter can contact City Hall for information. All ads are due by the second Friday of each month. The appearance of paid advertising is not an endorsement by the City. First of all we congratulate our Scholarship award winners:

Dakota Mills, Mariah Shaw, and Jessica Montalvan. We wish them success in their college studies. Award certificates were presented to them at the May City Council meeting. Look for photos on our website on the “News” page as well as the “Scholarship” page.

Hopefully you checked out our website (the “YOTM” page) to see photos of the May Yard of the Month award winners. Better yet, perhaps you drove by and got a first-hand look. We congratulate the award winners and all of you who are sprucing up your front yards and making Meadows Place “Your Beautiful Place for Life.” Our judges are saying it’s often hard to pick between two or three yards. Keep up your good work: it will be your turn soon. Our website lists the criteria we use. We make every effort to avoid awarding a yard two years in a row. Also, you do not have to be a member of the Club for consideration. Judging takes place on the last three days of the month for the following month. By the time you get this Newsletter, we will have already selected the award winning yards for June. The photos will be on the website and announced on Facebook.

Our May award winners were:

On May 9th, in lieu of our General Meeting, the Club held its “Installation Dinner” to formally “install” the new officers for the 2017-2018 program year which runs from September through May. All the chairpersons of our various committees were recognized as well. These were listed in the May Newsletter. We enjoyed a barbecue dinner provided by Majors Catering.

We hope to see you all from our float in the July 4th Parade.

LIFEGUARD OF THE MONTH

Congrats to Ellie Doina for being May’s Lifeguard of the Month! Ellie demonstrated exemplary leadership and rescue skills during our very first EAP (emergency action plan) training. Not only did she do an outstanding job during training, Ellie has shown she deserved the promotion to supervisor by her eagerness to help her fellow aquatic staff and for being vocal in how to help the operations of the pool run smoother. Thanks, and congrats Ellie!
