TERM 2 – WEEK 10

I feel very fortunate to have been able to attend the performances of both our bands last week and was extremely impressed with their progress. The children were so focused and their enjoyment in performing for families and friends was very obvious. If you get a chance it would be great if could take a look at the following: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/how-playing-an-instrument-benefits-your-brain-anita-collins When you listen to music, multiple areas of your brain become engaged and active The video explains in an entertaining way the type of neural activity that goes off in musicians’ brains when they play, and it examines some of the long-term positive effects of this mental workout. We tend to underestimate the absolute and varied benefits of learning to play an instrument. Thank you to the many staff who supervised in their own time the ICAS Writing and Spelling Competitions so that students could have this opportunity last week. Last Thursday our Year 2 students attended their Lessons Afloat excursion. Even though the skies were cloudy with scattered showers it did not dampen their enthusiasm. The feedback from the parents who attended was very positive and all the children were extremely well behaved. Semester 1 Reports Last Friday students from K-6 received their Semester 1 Progress Reports. This week the Class teachers have scheduled their parent – teachers interviews so that they can discuss the reports. It will be really appreciated if you are able to keep to the allocated 10 minutes. The interviews will be conducted in the hall on Monday 22nd June and Wednesday 24th June between 3.30pm and 6.30pm. Kindergarten Enrolments for 2016 We are now taking Enrolments for Kindergarten 2016. If you have a child starting in Kindergarten next year, please contact the office. Families who have siblings already attending BBPS should also inform the office if they have a child who will be commencing Kindergarten in 2016. If you have a neighbour with a child who will be starting school next year please let them know that they should complete an Expression of Interest Form at the school office. All of our dance groups will be performing at “Stars on Stage “ evening at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre on Tuesday June 23rd. Thank you to Mrs Manahan and Mrs Barry for the time spent organizing the costumes and finetuning the dancers involvement. Thank you also to all the teachers at Burraneer bay who supervise the dance groups before school and at lunchtime. The changes in organization that have been implemented in 2015 have worked well and have allo wed for all dance students to have their lessons in the hall. Good luck to all the students. This Thursday we will have our Combined K-6 Pennant and Values Assembly. It will be held in the hall and will commence at 9.30am. All parents and friends are welcome to join us under the hall COLA as we celebrate another successful term of learning. School Holidays The last day of Term 2 is Friday 26th June. Students will return to school for the beginning of Term 3 on Tuesday 14th July as Monday 13th July is the Staff Development Day. There will be a couple of community user groups using the grounds over the holidays and there will be some contractors on site. If you see any suspicious behaviour do not hesitate to call School Security – 1300 880 021 I hope you and your family have a safe and restful Term 2 holiday break. Thnk you for your continued support. Greg Fitzgerald Principal

The boys came second in the competition which is a fantastic achievement. Last week Adam Singleton and Troy Williams played as part of the Sydney East 12 years Rugby League team at the State competition at Cronulla. Lachlan Bird, Noah Steiner, James Morrison and Mason Dunn trialled in the Southern Zone Union competition during the week as well. Jordan Ribarovski and Kyren Bishop took part in the Sydney East Golf competition at George’s Hall on Monday 15th June. Lucy and Ben who will now be competing at the State Cross Country Carnival in Term 3. In addition Isabella Spyridis represented BBPS at the NSW Interschools Equestrian Competition. Isabella exceeded her personal best and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. She competed against all grades of riders and ponies and horses of excellent experience. Well done to all the above fantastic sports representatives. Sandra Nakkan Assistant Principal 2015 ATHLETICS CARNIVAL What a great day we had at The Ridge at the Field Events Carnival on Tuesday 9th June 2015. We also included 800m timed finals at the Ridge this year. There were some fantastic results overall from the children and the positive, enthusiastic attitude of the students stood out as a feature of the day. It was great to see the level of commitment from students who were prepared to have a go and not worry where they came in the event. One outstanding achievement was in the Junior 800M by Lucy Alexander who broke a school record with the new time of 2:47.52secs. Congratulations Lucy. A fantastic result. The Athletics Track Carnival was held on Thursday 11th June 2015 at Sylvania. The weather was not the best but we were lucky- it stayed dry for another successful day at the track. The children behaved beautifully and did their ‘personal best’ on the day. Thank you to all of the parents who helped with a range of jobs and thank you to all of the staff members for their tireless efforts on what was a fantastic carnival. We have many children moving to the next level of competition as they represent the school at the Cronulla Zone Carnival. Congratulations and good luck. The results from both days will be published separately. Mrs Archer
