A Message from our Principal, Ms Pantelis

Supporting our Students

Burraneer Bay Public School has received funding for a Student Wellbeing Officer until the end of 2019. We are fortunate to have a trained teacher, Mrs Louise Nash, as our Student Wellbeing Officer. Her regular days at school is on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Together with our School Counsellor, there is support available for our students every day of the week. A reminder that you may contact the school office or your child’s teacher to access this support.

What is a Student Wellbeing Officer?

A Student Wellbeing Officer is an additional support for school communities to assist with the social and emotional wellbeing of members of school communities.

Student Wellbeing Officers are able to run specific programs tailored to the needs of the school such as grief and loss, social skills, resilience building and anti-bullying. Student Wellbeing Officers also provide one-on-one care, mentoring and support for students, parents and staff. Chaplains network with the local community to provide a broad range of support services to the school.

What kind of activities can a Student Wellbeing Officer do?

" Work with Learning Support or Welfare Team to facilitate student wellbeing

" Provide pastoral care for students, staff and the wider school community

" Facilitate small group programs and one-on-one meetings with students

" Facilitate lunch time activities to assist students in building healthy relationships

" Network with welfare services, local churches and other agencies in the local community to provide a broad range of support services to the school

" Build mentoring relationships and assist students with goal setting

" Support staff at school camps, excursions and other activities as required

Permission to see the Student Wellbeing Officer

The SWO program is a voluntary program and students participating in small groups run by our Student Wellbeing Officer or receiving one on one support, must complete a permission slip/referral form. These will be held in the school office. Parents wishing to make an appointment with our Student Wellbeing Officer can book a time through the school office.

Celebrate Canteen Week We are so fortunate to have an amazing Canteen Coordinator at Burraneer Bay PS - Catherine Marshall who ensures that our school canteen is running efficiently. Special thanks to all our volunteers who assist in the canteen in order to provide this service to our school community.

Holiday Exemption Form A reminder that if you are planning to take holidays throughout the school term, parents need to complete an application form for extended leave (generally over 4 days) which can be downloaded from the school website under "Useful Links" - Application for Extended Leave -Travel, or alternatively obtained from the school office. The form does request supporting documentation and needs to be submitted at least one week prior to the date of travel. If leave is approved then days absent do still get marked as whole day absences, but recorded as justified leave.

It is important for students to attend school every school day as this can have an impact on their learning.

Some interesting facts regarding absences and lateness to school.

Did you know…….. If your child is regularly late they miss huge amounts of learning time, lateness has the same impact as

absenteeism.

There is a direct correlation between attendance and achievement.

Frequent absences make it difficult for teachers who have to continually re-teach information skills.

Being 15 minutes late to school twice a week equals to missing 5 hours a term and 20 hours a year of missed schooling.

Patterns of attendance/absence are set up in the early years of schooling.

Being absent five days a term from Kindergarten to Year 10 adds up to more than one year of missed schooling.

Poor attendance makes it difficult for students to form positive relationships with their peers.

If we all do one random act of kindness daily

we just might set the world in the right direction.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL REPORT

When a child is sick… We do ask parents to please keep their child at home if their child is sick to try and prevent infections from spreading. We have had a number of children sent to sick bay at the start of school day. It is very distressing for a child when they are sent to school sick. If parents cannot be contacted then the emergency person listed in the system will be contacted to pick up the child. A reminder to send any updated details to the school office if any changes have been made. Thank you in anticipation of your support in this matter.

High Standards of Uniform – school hats Staff have noticed that a number of students are not wearing their school hat. Please remind your child that all students are to wear their school hat before school, at recess and at lunchtime every day. School hats are available from the uniform shop. Thank you to all our families for your ongoing support to ensure that our students are always dressed in full school uniform. The wearing of school uniform imparts a sense of pride, creates a unified community and improves school spirit.

Student Safety There have been a number of times over the past week when we have had to revisit one of our school rules -‘To be in the right place at the right time doing the right thing.’ Student safety is very important to us. You can help to keep your children safe by

Ensuring your children are not in the playground before 8:40am unless they are attending a

supervised activity like band or dance. All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 who are in the

playground before 8:40am are to sit on the silver seats outside the administration block. They are to

remain on these seats until the teachers on morning duty collect them. Students are not to wait in

the hall or under the Hall Cola.

Ensuring your children are collected from school at 3:10pm. There should be no students or parents

on the school grounds after 3:30pm. The only exception is students who go to BAC.

Reminding your child that they should never be in a classroom or building without a teacher present.

Reporting to Parents Staff are very busy writing the Semester 1 reports. Teachers will write individualised comments for English and Mathematics. These comments will reflect how well the students have achieved what they have had the opportunity to learn. They will also provide practical suggestions as to how parents might support their child’s learning. The comments for Creative Arts, Science and Technology, HSIE and PDHPE will also be individualised. Students will receive a grade for achievement and a grade for effort. Involvement in School Activities, Application and Attitudes to Learning will also be acknowledged. The report will also have a general comment that reflects their attitude to school and their learning. It is very important to understand that student reports reflect how well the students have achieved what

they have had the opportunity to learn in Semester 1, 2019.

Definitions of the descriptors used in our reports are found on the front of the report. Please read these

carefully to ensure that you have a clear understanding of your child’s achievement. Most of the students

will receive SOUND. This shows that the student has achieved most of the skills, values and knowledge

intended by the teacher when they planned the learning program for the semester. Your child is doing well.

Students from K-6 will receive their 2019 Semester 1 Progress Report on Monday June 24th

Debating On Friday the 17th of May our Year 5 and Year 6 debating team’s versed Woolooware Public School.

The topic was ‘Why homework should be banned in all primary schools”. The students from both teams

were very eager to share their ideas, as we were both Affirmative. The Year 6 team were up first and

demonstrated strong, cohesive arguments to convince the adjudicator to ban homework. The girls were

very passionate about this topic and came out of the debate with a win! The Year 5 team were well prepared

and their arguments were fantastic, presenting themselves with confidence. Unfortunately they didn’t get

the win. The team is excited to take on Woolooware Public School again next week! Both teams are to be

congratulated on their amazing efforts in their first debate. Bring on next week when we venture to

Woolooware Public School.
