Fifth Sunday of Easter

May 3rd 2015

Today we hear the early Christian communities as they multiplied and grew. Spreading the Gospel was a risky thing, and they were motivated and fed by their memo-ries of Jesus' powerful words. The familiar Israelite image of the vine in today's Gospel would have been especially reassuring. Despite the physical separation, their deep, ongoing connection to Jesus remained firm. It's the same message for us. Stay close, trust in the source, and keep bearing fruit!

Today’s Theme

Something to Think and Pray About This Week

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus’ “I AM” statement, “I am the vine, you are the branches,” speaks of inti-macy and fruitfulness in discipleship. If we are to produce rich fruit, we have to be not only connected to Jesus, the life-giving vine, but also have to be open to being “pruned” by the Father, the vine-grower. Being pruned involves living according to Jesus’s words and actions. By living the Gospel values, we will have intimacy with Jesus and give honor to God by living as true disciples.

Altar Linens Our Parish is looking for a few people to help wash and iron the altar linens that are used during Mass. This would include only the small towels and cloths on the altar, not the Priests vest-ments or other larger items. If you can give an hour or two once a month, please call the Parish office.

Catholic Elementary Schools This weekend, at all of our masses, we will take up a second collection for the Catholic Elementary Schools. Please help us to provide our children with a solid education based in our rich, Catholic faith and tradi-tions. Thank you for your support of our Catholic Ele-mentary Schools throughout the diocese.

Bereavement Support Group QMHR will host a six week bereavement support group

beginning in May. For additional information, please call the Parish

Outreach office at 537 0156 x 11.

Treasures from Our Traditions

Over time, the crisis of last illness and the way the faithful met death changed. In earliest times, a sickbed vigil was an occa-sion for the community to gather and strengthen the dying per-son with assurances of love. A thousand years ago, in part be-cause of massive upheavals in society, a new emphasis on indi-vidual repentance captured the imagination of millions. Death was to be feared, because it was about judgment. The delights of heaven’s banquet dimmed, since most people saw God’s just judgment and inevitable punishment intervening. If a com-munity gathered at all, it was not to express faith in the Resur-rection, but to seek forgiveness for those who were powerless to help themselves. The dead couldn’t improve their situation, but their loved ones, by expressing sorrow for sin, could. Bet-ter yet, the clergy could, if they intervened in a timely fashion, provide the absolution needed for everyone to relax. Ministry to the sick shifted away from a ministry of consolation toward a challenge to repent before it was too late. As the sense grew that most people died with their work of repentance incomplete, the color black was reintroduced to funerals. It was the old pagan way of expressing despair. No wonder they call this time in history the “Dark Ages.” Many layers have had to be peeled away to reveal the deepest, most positive expressions of our tradition of care for the dying.

Dear Parish Family, In the Gospel today, Jesus challenges the faith and hope of His disciples. He helps them to understand that if we are focused on Him we are on the right Way to our heavenly home. One of the most popu-lar hymns in many churches is entitled “Lord, I’m coming home.” In the verses of this hymn we pro-claim to the Lord that we are ready and prepared to return home because we have repented of our sin-fulness; we have decided to return from our way-ward ways; we are sorry that by hurting others we have gone against His love. Now we have made our peace with others; we promised never to stray far away from Him again, and we promise to live a relationship of love. A home is a place where we belong. It is a web of close relationships. It means sacrificing for one an-other; caring for each one’s needs being ready to forgive and understand, and being ready to accept one another unconditionally. We feel comfortable living in such a home. When we are away from such a place that cares for our needs, returning home is a happy experience. Yes, we want to be where we feel we belong, where we love and are loved by others. Apart from feeling we belong in our human relationships we can never forget that it is also very important to be in communion with God. Communion with others and with God is necessary for a meaning human existence. We need to re-member that Jesus came to establish this relation-ship of care and love in a kingdom. Mothers Day Novena of Masses Beginning on Mother's Day, May 10th, we will begin a nine day novena of Masses in honor of our moth-ers, living or deceased. To include our mothers in these Masses, kindly return the information enve-lope you received in your contribution envelope packet or use one of the envelopes available where you obtain your bulletin. If you would like to pre-sent a living mother with a spiritual bouquet Mass card, these are also available where you obtain a bulletin.

May God Bless You Always. Fr. Peter

Apostolado Hispano
