Dear Parents,

The responsibilities and the nature of leadership in the Church has been thrust into our minds and hearts by the news of the recent conviction on child sexual abuse charges of the highest ranking Australian Church leader. A statement from Archbishop Mark Coleridge, President of the Australian Bishops Conference in reference to this case states: “We pray for all those who have been abused and their loved ones, and we commit ourselves anew to doing everything possible to ensure that the Church is a safe place for all, especially the young and the vulnerable”. He also states: “The Bishops agree that everyone should be equal under the law and we respect the Australian legal system.”

Investiture MassTwo of the most senior student leaders for 2019 Head Prefect Isabella Haddad and Deputy Mackenzie Smith reflected on the Gospel of Luke at yesterday’s Mass by asking the question, “What truly makes a person a great leader?”. Isabella’s reflection follows:

In today’s Gospel, Jesus shares with us what it means to be a true leader. Despite there being many figures of authority during his time, and even today, who exercise power for their own gain, Jesus challenges his followers to each become leaders of a different nature. Asking his disciples the question ‘For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves?’, Jesus makes it clear that our willingness to serve one another leads us to much greater success as leaders. Therefore, we should not focus on being the greatest, but instead put our efforts into making sure that each member of our community feels valued, and that their needs are met. This way of leadership is commonly known as servant leadership, and as a Dominican school which strongly upholds the Dominican pillar of service, our service to others is evidently of a high importance. As a school, our ongoing support to others in the extended community is an incredible example of our commitment to serving others. In doing this, we must not forget that even the smallest acts of service never go unnoticed. Whether that be helping a friend with their homework or giving up your seat on the bus, each of these small acts add up, and help our community to grow. However, it is not only those with a badge who are considered leaders. Rather, everyone in this room has the responsibility as part of our strong community to serve one another. Through our service to each other, we must put the needs of others before our own, and be determined to ensure that those around us feel empowered to achieve greatness.

Next week we will present Mackenzie’s thoughts.

Moving into Middle PrimaryYear 3s have been enjoying the challenges of moving into Middle Primary, such as getting themselves organised for the school day with little or no parent assistance and completing regular homework tasks on time.

In and around the classrooms:

We’ve been learning about Measurement in Maths and used a trundle wheel to measure the width of the netball court in metres. Rulers, tape measures and metre rulers were used to measure items in and around the classroom to the nearest millimetre, centimetre or metre. Each day the girls engage in a ten minute quick spelling activity. These activities provide the girls with regular opportunities to practise using the spelling strategies they are learning about in class. The girls are finding these activities challenging and fun. SANTOS: Our Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 students had a very early start last Thursday, to trial for the 100m and 200m Sports Day semi-final qualifying races at SANTOS Stadium. We are thankful to our parents who were able to get all the squad to school on time, for this very early departure. The girls enjoyed the experience of running on the track. Results will be released later in the week.

Yr 3 Vi-Anh: I enjoyed it but was exhausted. In the 400m race, I had some tears but I still finished it. I am proud of myself.

Yr 4 Natalie: At first it was very nerve racking but when you started you felt like a professional running on the track.

Yr 5 Chanelle: it was my first time running on an athletics track. I think it made me go faster than when I run on grass. It was a fun morning. I would do it again.

Yr6 Macy: It was a fun and exciting morning as we lined up on the track and heard the gun, which gave me a fright. We ran down the track to the cheers of others. I was puffing but felt good.

Traffic Management: Thank you to the parents who are helping us at pick up in Barnard Street, by staying in their car in the Kiss and Drop, not standing across driveways while you are waiting to be ushered into the Kiss and Drop zone and for definitely not doing U turns or 3 point turns outside the school. If you have relatives who will also be collecting your daughter, please inform them about the correct protocols to follow. Your assistance with this matter is very important for the children’s safety.

Primary Field Day is Tuesday 12 March on our oval (weather permitting) Years 3-6 students will be attending. The year levels will rotate between the activities and your daughter has already placed her nomination for events. They have the opportunity to participate in long jump, high jump, shot put and discus. It is a fun time and we encourage our girls to actively participate. All participating students are to have their sport uniform on this day, have their hat, drink bottle and apply sunscreen.

Year 4 Class will be presenting assembly in Week 6. All welcome and it begins in the Hall at 2:30

Congratulations to our Year 6 Sport leadersA lovely blend of friendships forming with our old Year 5s and new

students to our school
