Dear Parents, Millions of Christians around the world are journeying towards the most sacred days in our Calendar, as we enter into the meaning of Jesus’ Last Supper, his journey to the cross of Calvary, and his Resurrection on the third day.Your St. Dominic’s daughters, both primary and secondary, are challenged, according to their age, to reflect on the meaning of Easter, and the love of God revealed in Jesus for each and every one of us. Early Sunday morning the strong wind and rain, certainly made me dig deep to find my positive thoughts and Growth

Mindset attitude of: we can do this! While the wind remained, the sun slowly made its presence felt and we carried on. We really did have a very good day. All the teachers and students put considerable time into the preparation of each event and were rewarded with enthusiastic student effort and attitude in all events. We also had an excellent, supportive parent body who gladly volunteered to help with the games, the convening of stalls and a big thank you to those kept us well fed. We also thank the many who work behind the scenes at these school events: Mrs Heggs spent the whole day recording placings of individual and year level points and to Mrs White and Sister Heiu who helped support Junior Primary. Thank you to all our Primary families for returning all Raffle Books before Sunday.

SAPSASA State Carnival Last Thursday Hannah Cameron, Alyssa Tran, Morgan Hillman, Bree Copeland, and Isabelle Tran attended the SAPSASA Swimming Carnival. All students need to be congratulated on their excellent performance and dedication. Many early morning trainings and the considerable support from their parents have helped prepare them for these events.

Morgan finished 11th in the U/11 Butterfly Bree swam an impressive personal best in the U/12 50m Freestyle RelayIsabelle finished 14th in the U/13 Breaststroke, Freestyle and Backstroke

We particularly congratulate Hannah and Alyssa who qualified for finals in their respective age groups amongst a very competitive field:

Hannah made it through to the final (top 8) of the U/13 Breaststroke, finishing in 6th placeAlyssa made it through to the final of the U/11 50m Backstroke finishing in 7th place and came 9th in the 50m Breaststroke

Last Thursday I was fortunate to represent North Adelaide Districts at State Metro Day and had fun cheering on our friends from our zone and

other Adelaide zones. I was very excited to make it through to the 50m breaststroke final.

Parent/Teacher InterviewsThank you to all parents who quickly signed in and made an appointment using our new online Parent-Teacher Interview booking system. Last night’s meeting was well attended and we look forward to seeing more parents at next Wednesday’s Parent-Teacher Interviews. It is important to communicate and celebrate your daughter’s successes and growth points and then set goals for Term 2. If something unforeseen happens and you are unable to attend that evening please contact this out of hours’ number 0409 206 205 (for school interviews only) and a message will be given to the teachers.

Reminders:Holy Thursday the students are having a bread roll for lunch as we collectively contemplate those who are a lot less fortunate than us. Please check that your daughter has brought in her $2.

Normal finishing time this Thursday.

Week 10 Assembly will be hosted by our Year 3 Class. All welcome. 2:30pm in the Hall.

Traffic Management on Barnard StreetThe staff and many parents try very hard to safely streamline the movement of students leaving from school in the afternoon but all of us need to make a consistent effort to have the safety of our children paramount. Some concerns from neighbouring residents need to be addressed and effectively acted on: 1. Vehicles blocking driveways (i.e. double

parking) in a way that is not immediately visible to a reversing car

2. Vehicles pulling directly in to a driveway as a resident’s vehicle is attempting to reverse

3. Safety of students running across the road or running ahead of parents and then crossing driveways with reversing cars

4. Definitely no U turns outside a school or 3 point turns in the school driveway

Adelaide City Council Parking and Information Officers and the Eastern Adelaide Police will issue expiations to any vehicles contravening these rules. Please be mindful of your own behaviour around schools, whether in relation to where you park or the respect shown to those trying to ensure pedestrian safety – you are our children’s greatest role model.

The Year 6 class have been in training to become guides for the upcoming Guided Tours. In the process they have had to learn a lot of new information about the school and about significant landmarks in the school grounds.. I learnt that the Conway Library was named after

In and around the classrooms:

YEAR 6

Mother Mary Vincent Conway, a teacher here in the 1960’s and 70’s - Alexandra ChavezI learnt that the St Dominic Statue is a time capsule - Annabel GriffinI learnt that the Drama Room was once a dining room - Ayo Adejoro.

Over 600 teenagers are injured on our roads each year. You CAN do something about it!

Harmony DayWednesday 21 March 2018

Harmony Day is a celebration of our cultural diversity and a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. Our College community includes a diverse enrolment profile and we are extremely proud of this and celebrate this frequently, not just on Harmony Day.

On Wednesday 21 March, some teachers chose to integrate Harmony Day activities within lesson time, while SRCs also ran an activity with their home class. This meant that each student was able to decorate an orange girl or boy stencil and they also were asked to include words that unite humanity. With these, SRCs decorated their classroom doors and the sea of orange doors helped mark the day’s celebration of diversity and inclusion.

Muriel Noujaim, Deputy Principal (Student Wellbeing)

“EvErYOnE BElOnGs” That’s the Harmony Day message which the Year 3 class embraced as they immersed themselves in orange and various Cultural activities last Wednesday. We were fortunate to have Amanda and Tola come in and share their cultures with us. The Year 3’s are now experts at Italian Sauce Making and Nigerian drumming and dancing!

Tania Piotto, Year 3 Class TeacherThe drumming with Tola was really funny and funky. We did drumming with her. It was so much fun. - Emma

On Harmony Day, the Year 3s got to dress up in orange. We got to try these delicious Nigerian Jolly Balls and Chin Chins. - Piper

When we were making and eating the spuds I thought they were Spud-a-liscious! - Faridah

We did a sand mandala that we enjoyed because it was peaceful. - Trina

My favourite was eating pasta and learning how Amanda and her family makes the sauce. I loved eating the pasta so much I had seconds! - Clare

I learnt asking for more food is a good way of saying it is good in Italy! - Briana

I enjoyed doing the activities and I liked trying new foods. It was a fantastic day. - Nathalie

Made for Greatness Student Leaders Gathering Thursday 15 March 2018

On Thursday 15 March 2018 the ‘Made for Greatness’ student leaders Gathering was held at st Ignatius Parish Hall. The student leaders program aims to support schools in building the leadership capacity of our young people. The program has a Catholic foundation and complements the nurturing of leaders that schools already provide. Five of our students attended this gathering.

Muriel noujaim, Deputy Principal (student Wellbeing)

Chloe, L i ly, Kel l ie , Phuong and I were l u c k y e n o u g h t o at te n d t h e Yo u n g Christian Students ( YC S ) L e a d e r s h i p Conference in order to communicate with other schools and their different approaches to leadership. Leaders

from Blackfriars, Cabra, Sacred Heart and many other schools were there to share their ideas. Thalia Sully (Adelaide YCS Coordinator) was there to give us a few tips and share her methodology; see, judge, act. We all were inspired by this idea of seeing a problem, judging the situation and acting on what needs to be done. Reflection was also a key point in this process as we need to reflect on our actions and reflect how we affect others. We are extremely excited to bring back the knowledge we learnt from the afternoon and apply this to school life.

Sports Day turned out to be a great day after the initial shower of rain and the St Dominic’s school community joined together

to make it another great community event at the Sacred Heart complex. An amazing day that is completely prepared and run by volunteers. We were very grateful to all of the volunteers who assisted on the day to make it such a success.Catering for the day ran smoothly thanks to the tremendous effort of the convenors, who provided sustenance for the community with the assistance of many enthusiastic helpers. Thank you to all who donated their time to help out on stalls on Sunday and in the days and hours prior to the big day. Also a big thank you to the parents and businesses who donated the goods for use on the day. Well done to those who came early to set up, stayed late to clean up, or who spent hours slaving over a hot BBQ, cutting up the fruit for fruit salad, preparing the Vietnamese salads, making coffees or serving the large crowd that was present. Your time and team spirit made all the difference. To the convenors of our stalls, we extend our special thanks for donating hours of your time on the day, and in many instances, many hours in the lead-up to the event. Each year we put aside some time to reflect on the previous year, in a bid to consider any worthwhile enhancements that might result in the event being just that little bit better, but most of all to ensure that it continues to be an enjoyable time for all. A great deal of thought and effort is contributed by many parents and staff and we would welcome any new feedback either by contacting us direct or by your attendance at the next P&F Meeting on Wednesday 23 May.

Thank you to those parents who stayed longer than allocated or just came up and lent a hand when they saw we were busy. Many thanks once again. - Mark Hawkins & Scott Coombe

For those still half asleep at 7am Sunday morning, we could not have done it without you to help set up the stalls and oval. To those with weary feet, and tired arms and legs at the end of the day your help was so much appreciated to get everything back the way it was, and everything back to school. Well done to all of you.
