2013-2014 School Captains
Congratulations to our incoming
leadership team who take on the role for the next
12 months. To be recognised by your peers as
leaders is a great honour and to take on that role
is something special.
School Captains: Brad Kirkpatrick and Emma
Crispin.
Vice Captains: Jake Kilgannon, Megan Harrington,
Daniel Sahyoun and Michaela Mason.
My apologies to both Jake and Megan who were
missing from the photograph included in the last
newsletter. The original photograph was taken at
the induction ceremony by a family member and
ended up in our newsletter without the proper
checking. I have included an up-dated
photograph above which includes all elected
members.
Parent/Teacher Evening – Feedback
Thank you to all the parents who came to our
Years 7-11 parent/teacher evening last Tuesday.
Whilst there was a reasonable turnout we’re still
concerned that many parents don’t come and
speak with their child’s teacher.
I would appreciate any feedback you have about
our parent/teacher evenings. Either from those
parents who did attend or even from parents
who didn’t. We try and make these accessible for
as many parents as possible but do understand if
some parents aren’t able to attend.
Please contact me either on the school number
(4997 4329) or by email
([email protected]) if you wish to
provide feedback or any constructive suggestions.
Congratulations
It’s with great pride that we see our students
gaining recognition in the local papers. Last
month both Jayden Dorney and Carl Williams
both featured in the Myall Coast Nota for their
outstanding performances in their particular
fields.
Jayden has exceptional talent in camp drafting
and regularly finishes on top of the competition.
Lots of hard work from Jayden and support from
his parents ensure that he will continue to exceed
at this demanding sport. Well done Jayden and
we wish you all the best as you vie for the
Australian Title.
Carl Williams also excels at his chosen sport of
running and has achieved top places in a number
of events held recently, including zone and
regional cross country and athletics. He will be
representing the school at state level in the
coming months and we wish him all the best. We
are quietly confident that Carl will make it
through to the national championships, such is
his talent.
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT:

BCS DEPUTY PRINCIPAL:
Last week I had the pleasure of
accompanying our students to Tea
Gardens where Year 6 students from Booral,
Coolongolook, Tea Gardens and Bulahdelah were
part of a showcase transition day. Teachers from
Bulahdelah Central secondary department
travelled down to Tea Gardens and presented a
series of lessons in Chinese, Science, Drama,
Mathematics, Music , PE and D&T. Along with
teaching staff: Mrs Gilbert, Mr Gladys, Ms
Brewer, Ms Parsons, Mrs Cunich, Ms McKenzie,
Mrs Thompson and Mrs McDonald, students from
across the secondary years also attended and
assisted staff; or presented items to various
groups of Year 6 students.
Thank you to Tea Gardens staff and students for
hosting the day which was both enjoyable and a
great opportunity to promote Bulahdelah Central
School and the range of secondary subjects on
offer.
I would also like to commend our students for the
enthusiasm and the way in which they conducted
themselves throughout the day. They were
outstanding ambassadors and made a great
contribution to the success of the day.
Last week was Education Week and our students
were engaged in a variety of activities including;
World Cup Soccer, Spelling Bees, Numeracy
activities, Public Speaking and a visit to Luna Park.
Thanks to staff who organised these events and
the enthusiastic participation of the students
which helped Bulahdelah Central School to
celebrate Education Week and have some fun as
well as exhibit our PRIDE values in a range of
different contexts.
Thank you to all the parents who came to discuss
their child’s progress with teachers last Tuesday
evening at the parent/teacher night. This is a
valuable opportunity to find out how your child is
faring and to have conversations about any issues
which are of concern. If you were unable to
attend on the night there is always the chance to
call teachers and make an appointment to see
staff at school.
Best wishes to our Year 12 who will be sitting
their HSC Trial exams this week. This is important
for final assessment marks in all their subjects but
also an opportunity to prepare and practise for
the actual HSC in October. Students who do not
have exams on particular days do not have to
attend as long as they have filled out a leave
permission note.
Students in Years 8 and 10 will be asked to make final selections for their elective subjects in 2014 this week as final selections are organised into elective lines. If you have any concerns don’t hesitate to phone and discuss them with the school.

As previously mentioned, we now
have 6 classes. The classes are now K-1,
1-2, 3-4, 4, 5 and 6. Ms Karina Laurie is going
to be the new teacher of 3-4 for the time being.
Ms Laurie has been our RFF (Relief Face to Face)
teacher for some time and knows all of the
students. It is anticipated that the students, in the
newly formed class, will settle quickly and adjust
easily to new routines. Classes will now be a
much more manageable size.
Education Week was a huge success with many
activities taking place, to engage the students,
throughout the week. Thanks to all the parents
and friends who came along and supported the
students in the many endeavours on show.
The highlight of the week was “Showcase Day” at
Tea Gardens Public School. Seven of our fabulous
secondary teachers, secondary student helpers
and Year 6 travelled to Tea Gardens, where they
participated in 5 of the following seven activities:
Science, PD/Health/PE, Music, Maths, Chinese,
Drama and Woodwork.
The purpose of the day was to give the Yr 5 and 6
students, from our partner schools, a taste of
what BCS has to offer in the way of curriculum
opportunities and to sell our school as the first
choice for high school. Our secondary teachers
and students did a fantastic job in showcasing our
school and what it has to offer. I would like to
thank them for their professionalism and
organising such engaging and interesting
activities. It was their input which made the day
the success that it was. Students from Booral and
Coolongolook also attended the day. See the
photos, of the day, elsewhere in this edition of
the newsletter.
The other stand-out events were, of course, the
Spelling Bee and Public Speaking finals. To see
the students from Kindergarten through to Year 6
participate in these events, with such confidence,
is truly amazing. Congratulations to all the
students who participated in these events! Well
done indeed!
Parent/teacher interviews will be held tomorrow
6th August between 3:00pm and 5:30pm. Please
take this opportunity to speak with your child’s
teacher about his/her progress. The
home/school partnership in the education of your
child is of vital importance. See you there!

GREAT AUSSIE BUSH CAMP YEARS 3 & 4

I initially graduated from the University of Newcastle in 1993 with a Bachelor of Arts (Communication Studies) degree, having majored in Public Relations and Photography. After travelling to North Queensland and living in the Whitsundays for several years, I decided to return to university and retrain as an English/ History teacher. I returned to the University of Newcastle in 1997, and 6 years (and two children) later, I graduated with a Double Degree Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Teaching.
My first teaching post was at Moree Secondary College in 2004. This was an amazing experience which helped foster my passion for Aboriginal Education. I left Moree on maternity leave in late 2005 and during this period of leave was appointed to Bulahdelah Central School. During my time at Bulahdelah I have undertaken a number of roles including Middle School Coordinator, Aboriginal Education Coordinator and Year Advisor. I teach English, History, Forensic History and Society and Culture and I am passionate about all of my subject areas. I enjoy my role of Year Advisor which provides the opportunity to work closely with a diverse range of students; celebrating their successes and helping them re-group after disappointments. I am always available to students, and parents, to discuss any issues or concerns that arise. I am currently looking forward to our upcoming Year 9 Camp which is scheduled for Week 10 of this term. It will be the first time the school has attended a camp in Dubbo, and students will have the opportunity to experience a ZooSnooze sleepover at Western Plains Zoo as well as a range of other activities including visits to Wellington Caves and the old Dubbo Gaol.

Celebrate Attendance
Hints and Tips No 4: Good Attendance
With the temperatures starting to get warmer growing all the delicious fruits to get juice and getting yummy vegetables to grow big and crunchy, it’s a perfect time to think about Fruit & Veg Month. This year Fruit & Veg Month will be weeks 7-10 of Term 3, 26th August to 20th September. Fruit 'n' Veg Month is a celebration
of fruit and vegetables, which aims to get primary school children and their families excited and informed about fruit and vegetables. Bulahdelah Central School will be involved in activities to promote a healthy lifestyle but this year the program has been extended into the home to get the whole family involved. There are great competitions with FANTASTIC prizes for everyone! Students, Primary School classes and families all have the chance to be in the running. So jump on board and get involved with Fruit & Veg Month!
Go to www.fruitandvegmonth.com.au to register
and find out more information.
There are a number of sound reasons for you to ensure that your child attends school regularly. Firstly, attending school every day makes learning easier. For younger students, missing the basic skills often leads to learning problems later on and for older student’s absenteeism often interferes with academic progress. Friendships with other students are also easier if your child attends school regularly. The law in NSW states that all children between the ages of 6 and 17 years are required to attend school. Sickness or injury, attendance at a special religious ceremony, or some serious family situations are satisfactory reasons for non-attendance. Please let the school know why your child is not at school and provide an explanation on your child’s return to school Birthdays, haircuts, pension days, Mondays etc. are not satisfactory reasons for absence from school. Also try whenever possible to arrange your holidays in school vacation times. Please contact your school principal if you need any help or have any questions. If arranging a holiday of 5 or more days an Exemption Form for each child needs to be completed and returned prior to the holiday.
FRUIT & VEG MONTH 2013:

I am delighted that our school has been selected
to participate in a Department of Education and
Communities pilot of the Tell Them From Me
student survey. The survey aims to help improve
student learning outcomes and measures factors
that are known to affect academic achievement
and other student outcomes. The focus of the
NSW pilot project is on student wellbeing,
engagement and effective teaching practices.
More information about the survey is available
at: http://www.cese.nsw.gov.au/surveys/ttfm-
parents
The survey will provide our school with valuable
and quick feedback on what our students think
about school life, how engaged they are with
school and the different ways that teachers
interact with them. Schools in Australia and
around the world have used the Tell Them From
Me survey to help improve how they do things at
school.
I want to assure you that the survey is
anonymous and students cannot be identified by
their responses. The survey is conducted online
and will take around 30 minutes to complete. It
will be administered during school hours between
19th August and 6th September.
An information sheet and consent form about the
survey is being sent home with students. If you
do not want your child or children to participate,
please return the form to school by Friday 9th
August. Deb Gilbert.
Gardasil vaccine available through your GP for 15 year old boys in Year 10.
In 2012, the Australian Government announced
that human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine would
be provided free to male students in high schools
from 2013.
From 2013, males in Year 7 in all NSW high
schools will be offered HPV vaccine
annually.
In addition, males in Year 9 will be offered
the vaccine as part of the national ‘catch
up’ program in 2013 and 2014.
Males who are 14-15 years of age in 2013
and who are in Year 10 can receive free
HPV vaccine at their GP during 2013 only:
it is important when making the
GP appointment that the
receptionist is informed of the
reason for the visit and that
sufficient time is allowed (at least
three working days) for the vaccine
to be ordered and delivered to the
GP
HPV vaccination will continue to
be offered annually to female
students in Year 7 only.

Kitchen classes resume this Friday for Years 5 & 6
and next week on Thursday for Years 3 & 4.
I have decided to make a recipe book each term
utilizing recipes the children have been cooking in
their program with the aim of raising funds to
help sustain kitchen classes. Last term’s book is
now available for a small price of $5.00 and it
would be wonderful if this is supported. Please
email me, [email protected], if you
would like a copy and it will be sent home with
your children.
I am very short of volunteers for Years 3 & 4 and
these children need supervision in each and every
kitchen class.
