Climate ChangeThree ways family get hurt
Philippians 2:1-5 (NIV)
1 If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any
fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or
vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only
to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
3 ways family get hurt
• Selfish ambition
• Self-importance
• Self-centeredness
Selfish ambition
Galatians 5:18-23 (NIV) 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. 19
The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and
witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those
who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-
control. Against such things there is no law.
James 3:14-16 (NIV) 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every
evil practice.
Self-Importance or vain conceit ‘the desire for personal
prestige’ he goes on to write ‘Prestige is for many people an even greater temptation than wealth. To be admired
and respected, to have a platform seat, to have one’s opinion sought, to be known
by name and appearance, even to be flattered, are for
many people, most desirable things.” (William Barclay)
Self-centeredness
‘man curved in on himself’ (Martin Luther)
4 Each of you should look not only to your
own interests, but also to the interests of
others.
Build healthy family!
1. Look after yourself
2. Be interested in others
3. Practice self-forgetfulness
“You can't stay in your corner of the forest
waiting for people to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes”
(Winnie the Pooh)
