Scenario:You have been commissioned to design and create an infographic display for a local secondary school. You will need to use images and words to create an exciting visual for a school display that is both functional and eye-catching. You will meet with the school staff to discuss ideas for your designs as well as outline the key requirements.

You will need to make use of graphic media and Photoshop to develop your use of words and images as well as research ideas from other designers/artists. In addition, you will need to research a focused theme for your display and decide a suitable area to display your work. Through your understanding of visual recording, you will experiment with a range of media and produce outcomes which will be presented to the secondary school. These outcomes will need to explore the potential of words and images and will be exhibited in the school for both the students and the local community.

Criteria: Tasks:

Unit 1P1, P3

M1D1

Unit 41P1, M1, D1

You need to research and identify sources that are appropriate for this theme, whilst also looking at designers who look at word and images. You need to look at source material both artist and contextual. This research will be the start for you to develop your own ideas towards producing your outcome. You need evidence of a selection from a variety of sources, preferably most from primary experience. This needs to be done independently showing personal initiative in selecting your sources. When annotating you need to analyse using technical language and discuss visual recording in others’ work. You need to both review work and evaluate with in depth knowledge thinking about the needs of different audiences.

Unit 2P1, P2

M1, M2D1

Unit 41P3

Take own photographs and:- Manipulate- Draw- Mixed Media- Print- Paint

You need to develop your own primary sources and build a strong personal identity when developing your ideas.

You need to experiment using a variety of traditional and digital media and processes, covering different approaches to mark making. You need to manipulate your studies using exploratory approaches to media and techniques. When experimenting with the various media you need to evidence that you are able carry out safe investigations thinking about the processes.

Unit 1P4

Unit 2P3,

M1, D1

Unit 41P2, M2, D2

Annotate your work - Demonstrate critical skills in evaluating the qualities of materials, techniques and processes, giving reasons as to their suitability or not for different pieces of work using specialist vocab. Compare the different properties and characteristics of a range of media and materials, choosing their suitability for specific tasks. This can be shown in numerous ways such as test pieces, trials, swatches, sketchbook studies, print outs and annotated worksheets. You should produce a series of planned and annotated exploratory studies. You need to show in your writing that you have knowledge and understanding of health and safety.

Research infographic - Cravings

With your experiments you need to start putting them into the context of an infographic in the style of artists, communicating specific information for your targeted audience.

You need to look at diverse ways of presenting this information. Your refinement needs to be coherent, using visual recording selecting your ideas purposely. This can be done in numerous ways and example could be as small thumbnails or layout sheets, thinking about where the images and information goes. Also, discuss the suitability of materials, techniques and processes.

With your infographic layouts you need to consider individual and creative ways of presenting your information, developing a range of presentation methods. You need to think about the different audiences you will have ranging from adults to children and who you are aiming your infographics for as well as where they are displayed. For this I would like you to research a range of designers and existing infographics.

Unit 41P2, P3

M2, M3D1, D2, D3

Present your design ideas.

Once you have experimented with your images and looked at infographics and ways you can present in different layouts you need to now comment appropriately showing why you have chosen the different images. You should show connection between artists’ work and your own, showing how your work has been influenced by different artists. You need to provide self review and evaluation of your work throughout your sketchbook.

You need to show purposeful and individual experimentation and justification in developing your final outcomes using words and images. You need to demonstrate a wide range of responses to designing your Cravings infographic.

Present your outcomes.

Your final outcome should demonstrate an individual approach. Your design needs to demonstrate innovative design ideas and show in-depth understanding of the brief Share your ideas with the secondary school staff and ensure you cover all of the criteria discussed in the project brief and your meeting with staff. These outcomes will also need to be hung for exhibition. Take photos of your outcomes in their location and annotate and evaluate your work. Make sure you discuss the use of visual communication as well as abstract themes and/or literal themes.
