BRP Road Patch Application Guidelines

Step 1: PrepPrepare the Area and the BRP Road Patch.• The surface to be sealed should be brought up to the same level as the surrounding pavement.

• Base course areas should be compacted to provide a tight stone

mosaic surface.

• Sweep application area free from all loose particles.

• Ensure area is dry and not polluted with oil, grease, diesel etc.

• Mark out the area to be sealed with chalk or crayon. Note the BRP

Road Patch should extend 100mm beyond the edge of the defect or

area requiring sealing.

• Cut the BRP Road Patch to match the marked out area by scoring the

paper side with a suitable scoring tool eg Dressmakers Tracing Wheel

or Safety knife. Fold the sheet together on the stone side and pull the

sheets apart along the open joint.

Step 2: Adhesion• Use a Cationic Emulsion (60%+) or Anionic Emulsion (grade 65%) • Agitate the emulsion (shake the container), to ensure it is mixed well.• Apply the emulsion evenly to the marked out area & the back of the BRP Road Patch using a block brush, broom, roller or squegee.• Ensure coverage is even, leaving no uncovered areas or puddles of emulsion.• Check the edges to ensure that they are evenly covered. The approximate emulsion quantity is 0.75ℓ/m², but varies due the variable nature of the surface being sealed•Allow the emulsion to break on the pavement & the back of the BRP Road Patch i.e. emulsion turns from brown to black and becomes very tacky.

Step 3: Position• Place the first BRP Road Patch onto the emulsion treated area. BRP Road Patch to be paper side down, aggregate side upwards. • If further BRP Road Patches are required simply butt the edges of the BRP Road Patch tightly together by pushing (kneading) the BRP Road Patch with your foot to ensure a neat/tight fit. Do not overlap the BRP Road Patches at the joins. • Repeat the process until all the patches have been placed.• If layering the BRP Road Patch e.g. BRP Rumble Humps, install the first layer as per normal, but for the next layers paint the paper side only i.e. do not apply the emulsion to the top of the underlying layer. (This already has bitumen pre-coat so does not need emulsion.)

Step 4: Seal• To ensure a waterproof seal all edges and joins require the application of a small amount of emulsion and sand • Simply

• apply a small quantity of emulsion to the edges and joints using a brush.• Blind the edges and joints with crusher dust or sand.

• When installing traffic calming features i.e. BRP Rumble Humps and BRP Rumble Strips, and if you are not trying to water proof the pavement, the edge sealing is not required. Remember to blind off any excess emulsion with sand before rolling.

Step 5: Roll• Rolling of the patch is done to remove any air pockets and ensure maximum contact between the BRP Road Patch and the surface.• Simply Roll the BRP Road Patch with a rubber tyred vehicle. • Ensure the full width of the BRP Road Patch surface is rolled using the number of passes recommended in table 2.• Open the road to traffic.• Note; if physical obstructions mean that you cannot get the vehicle close enough to roll the BRP Road Patch then use a plate compactor with a rubber mat (e.g. section of discarded conveyor belt) between the plate and the BRP Road Patch to protect the Patch from damage.

Other Tips:• Store and transport the BRP Road Patch on a flat surface, aggregate side up.

• On site, do not leave the BRP Road Patch aggregate side down for extended periods, especially in high temperatures as this may cause aggregate loss.

• If the risks are high. i.e. high stress sites, (Roundabouts and intersections), cold weather or if rain is forecast in the next 12 hours more rolling should be applied as referred to in table 2, before opening to traffic.

• Ensure tool that you apply emulsion with is ‘solvent free’ before using them to spread the emulsion.

• Helpful Hints: • If using a brush/broom to spread emulsion intermittently all day, leave it in the

emulsion bucket with the bristles covered in emulsion. At the end of the day rinse the brush/broom out with water, clean in solvent, shake in cold soapy water and again in cold water. Leave the brush/broom in clean water until required again.

• To avoid cleaning tools use low cost rollers or brushes and dispose of them at the completion of the job.

Emulsion application:

Before using the Emulsion it is best to stir or shake in order to ensure it is blended and has not settled or broken.

Emulsion application can be done by either • Bottle• Bucket• Watering Can• Hand Lance @ low pressure – to avoid overspray ensure hand lance is at

low pressure and/or concentrated spray and only apply in centre of area to be covered and patch. Then spread the emulsion to the required are with the Emulsion broom/brush.

Emulsion Broom/Brush maintenance:In between repairs1. leave the Emulsion Broom/Brush immersed in water with the bristles

covered in emulsion. 2. Shake excess water off broom/brush prior to next use with emulsion

At the end of the day follow these steps with your Emulsion Broom/Brush If using again the next day1. leave the Emulsion Broom/Brush immersed in water with the bristles

covered in emulsion.

If not using again for spreading emulsion1. Rinse out the Emulsion Broom/Brush with water2. Clean the Emulsion Broom/Brush with solvent,3. Shake the Emulsion Broom/Brush in cold soapy water 4. Shake the Emulsion Broom/Brush in cold water. 5. Store the Emulsion Broom/Brush in clean water until required again.

Before Spreading Emulsion, ensure the Emulsion Broom/Brush is ‘solvent free’ to avoid undermining the Emulsion

Emulsion Roller maintenance:In between repairs leave the Emulsion Roller immersed in emulsion to

ensure the roller remains in a workable condition.

At the end of the day you can either 1. Dispose of the roller and use a fresh roller the next day

or 2. Follow these following steps to clean the Emulsion Roller

1. Rinse out the Emulsion Roller with water2. Clean the Emulsion Roller with solvent,3. Shake the Emulsion Roller in cold soapy water 4. Shake the Emulsion Roller in cold water. 5. Store the Emulsion Roller in clean water until required again.

Before Spreading Emulsion, ensure the Emulsion Roller is ‘solvent free’ to avoid undermining the Emulsion

Emulsion Squeegee maintenance:After a repair is completed wipe the Emulsion Squeegee with a solvent to remove any excess
