Summary of Session #1, part 1

• There were 149 people who pre-registered for the first Community Engagement Session. Of those, 63 attended. We had 87 people who joined us who did not pre-register but filled out a response card. Without counting our school administrators, we had 150 community members in attendance for the first Community Engagement Session.

• The goal of these meetings is for community members to ask questions that, when answered, will provide them with the understanding of the needs of the school district. Once those needs are understood, the community members will work together to make recommendations that will help guide the decisions of the School Board and the School District.

• Meeting participants want to see meetings that have a clear and focused agenda, that are respectful of people’s opinions and their time, and have clear action items.

Summary of Session #1, part 2

• A summary of each session will be posted within 24 hours of the session on the district webpage.

• It is important to these sessions for there to be continuity of participants. We ask that people try to come to each session. We will always welcome new people.

• In order to provide information to new people who may join after the first meeting, each session will begin with a brief summary of the previous meeting. One important item to note, is that once the group has made a decision to move forward, we will not return to that topic for someone who joins the sessions after the decision has been made. We will work to provide that person with an explanation of why a decision has been made (outside of the meeting). We will do this so that we don’t have to start over from the beginning at every meeting.

Summary of Session #1, part 3

• Findings from a recent demographic study conducted by Dr. Susan Brudvig were shared. Several slides (#4 – 9) are included in this presentation for review.

• Based on current numbers and projected kindergarten enrollment, classroom availability was shared with the group (slide 10).

• Individuals were asked to write down what questions they had as they considered the current enrollment of the school district.

• Each group then listened to the individual questions and came up with a list of questions that were important to the whole group and a list of questions that were important, but maybe important to only one or two people at the group.

• These lists were then shared around the room so that participants could see if there were questions that were asked from many groups.

Summary of Session #1, part 4

• As the great turnout of participants along with the configuration of the room did not allow for everyone to see all of the questions, we will post all of the questions along with this presentation.

• Our goal for February’s meeting will be to provide answers to some of the consensus questions so that we can begin to narrow our focus. This will help to build the agenda for the February meeting.

• Please remember that all questions will be answered, but with 90 minute meetings we cannot respond to all of the questions and have meaningful dialogue in one session.
