P R I N C I P A L ’ S M E S S A G E

If you haven’t read the sign I am now the Substantive Principal of Bowraville Central School. It is a privilege to lead this school. I take this responsibility seriously and look forward to working with the community for the next twenty years. Last newsletter I focused on positive relationships can support and improve attendance. I am pleased to say that our attendance has improved significantly and we are on target to reach our goal of over 90%. In 2019 we have set the goal to increase attendance and there will be incentives for individual students, classes and cohorts to increase their attendance and reach these goals. As parents and carers I encourage you to be part of this partnership to ensure the educational outcomes for your children are maximized. Strategic plan 2018-2022

The NSW Department of Education released the five year Strategic Plan with the vision ‘To be Australia’s best education system and one of the best in the world’. The plan includes 10 goals. Each fortnight I have been discussing one of the goals and how it related to Bowraville Central School. This week I will unpack with Goal 7 ‘Our school infrastructure meets the needs of a growing population and enables future-focused learning and teaching.’ Bowraville Central School will celebrate the 150 year anniversary in a few years and over the years the school has evolved and changed. In recent years this included the digital revolution and installation of wireless internet. Teachers are using technology in most lessons including Class Dojo, Google Classroom, Kahoot and Minecraft. In 2019 we will participate in Naplan Online for the first time. We will also participate in Best Start 7 which is an online tool designed to provide teachers with consistent and up to date information about new students skills and abilities in Literacy and Numeracy. Combined Schools Fete

The Bowraville Central School P&C are busy organising the inaugural Combined Schools Fete to be held at Bowraville Central School on the evening of 15 December culminating in Carols by Candlelight and the relighting of the Christmas tree. Hope to see you all there on the night, I am sure there will be lots of Christmas stocking fillers available at the stalls as well as bouncy castles and a visit from Santa.

Also a special announcement from the P&C. The school canteen will be closed the last days of the year 17th-19th December. Thank you to Alyson and Mel for all their efforts in 2018.

Bowra Paddock 2 Plate Perfection

Two weeks ago, on a warm Friday afternoon a crowd of 50 gathered at Bowraville Central School to climb aboard the school bus to be transported to the Ag Farm for the inaugural Paddock 2 Plate event. The event was hosted by the Year 10 Agriculture students and the food and beverages were served by the Year 12 Hospitality Class.

Guests included local residents, parents and Mayor Rhonda Hoban and Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey, MP. Melinda Pavey commented that it was “a perfect night of fine food sourced from the School’s Ag plot.” Mayor Hoban offered congratulations to the students and BCS staff Lori Wilson and Eve Riches for creating a wonderful event to showcase the Bowraville Central School’s facilities.

The event began with a student led tour of the Farm, with guests stopping at appetizer stations, where students each delivered a speech describing their enterprise project. Over the year, students have been involved in growing broiler and layer chickens, potatoes, pigs, dorper sheep and making soap from goat’s milk. The industry partners such as the Little Star Honey, Yamstick Organic Eggs and Nambucca Valley Aquaponics also supported the menu by providing fresh food to supplement the school farm produce.

The menu started with finger food of mini quiches made with farm and Yamstick eggs, BCS Farm ham and spinach, duo of devilled eggs with farm herbs and coloured with dehydrated beetroot. Upon seating the guests were served herb and parmesan twists with a fresh spinach, herb and garlic dip. The garlic only recently harvested from the BCS Ag plot.

The Hospitality students prepared mocktails made with freshly squeezed juice and provided jugs of spritzers filled with soda, bitters and farm fruit.

Mains were served as an alternate drop of either Pulled Pork with chipotle sauce or Marinated Pulled Lamb with tzatziki, served with seasonal rainbow slaw and potato salad. The pigs and lambs were grown ethically onsite and processed by a local licensed butcher.

Dessert featured a Citrus Curd Cannelloni and an Orange and Poppy Seed Cake, both served with freshly churned honey ice-cream, all made by the Year 12 Hospitality students.

Agriculture teacher Lori Wilson said it was a fantastic team event and wonderful to be celebrating the achievements of the Ag students and showcasing the beautiful school farm. She also thanked Eve Riches and her Hospitality students for their hard work, styling the event, plating and serving the food and drinks. Overall, it was the students and their enterprise projects that were able to shine on the night.

Schools Spectacular 2018

Wednesday 21st of November saw six students Beau, Candi, Wynee, Tori, Toria and Fletcher pile into my van in the early hours of the morning bound for Sydney Olympic Park as part of the Schools Spectacular choir. The days were long but exciting. First day, where we met up with Delaney, was our first group performance and our first chance to hear all the voices of the 2750 strong choir together. Thursday was full dress rehearsal at Qudos Bank Arena. We were all given a props pack including flashing bunny ears, gloves, glasses and disc. Choral movements were quickly learnt and all our school lunch time practices soon made sense. As part of the choir we had front row seats, above the full orchestra, to view the whole spectacle. One of the main themes for this year was The Greatest Showman, so many songs were taken from the movie. There were plenty of laughs and without mentioning names stand-out incidents included yoghurt splattering, butter chicken spilling, brick wall falling and midnight runs to Maccas and Krispy Kreme donuts. All students were amazing and a lot of fun. It was a great moment and special memories were made. Keep an eye out for the students as the Schools Spectacular will be broadcast on Channel 7 on Saturday December the 8th. Congrats to all the students involved, they were fantastic.

SRC News 

Thanks to everyone who brought in their gold coin for the Movember Moustache Day. There  are some great looking  kids  and  we  raised  $72.00  towards  Men’s Health. 

Social 

Our final Social  for  the year will be held on Monday Night, 10th December. The Social is strictly for Years 3 to 12.  This is our Charity Social – so we would like to create a food hamper.  The Cost for the Social will be $2.00 or a dona on of a toy – or long life food product to our hamper.   A Special Meal deal will come out – before the evening. 

Please note  a BBQ will be  served between 5:30  and 6pm.   Music and games will begin at 6pm – with pick up strictly at 8pm. 

Please  remind  your  child  about  their  responsibility (being  kind,  not  running  around,  staying  safe within the  school  grounds)  and  teamwork  (playing  fair, helping  to  keep  our  area  clean)  when  a ending  a social so everyone can have a great  me.

I’m very pleased to announce that Mr David Taylor has been appointed as the new principal of Bowraville Central School after a comprehensive merit selection process.

As you would be aware, Mr Taylor has done an excellent job of relieving in the principal position for the last year and over that time, he has successfully worked with staff, students and the community to further enhance the excellent academic, sporting and cultural opportunities available to students at Bowraville Central School.

Mr Taylor clearly demonstrated throughout the merit process an unwavering dedication to the Bowraville community and commitment to ensuring that school is a welcoming and relevant place for students from Kindergarten to Year 12. He is passionate about quality teaching and learning, student wellbeing and meeting the needs of every student.

I am delighted that Mr Taylor been successful in his application for the principal position and I look forward to working with him in the years to come.
