How to complete the competency section of the application form

The competency section on the application form provides you with the opportunity to demonstrate that you have the competencies required for the programme.

The form asks you to consider four competencies and provide a specific, relevant example for each one that tells us how you have demonstrated that competency in the past.

If you do not have a work related example you can include examples from things you have done outside work; for example with voluntary groups, social environments, education or training.

It is important that you are specific when writing about what you have done. Do not describe what you have done in general terms. Choose a specific event, project, task or achievement.

In each example you need to clearly describe what your personal contribution was. You should avoid using “we” and describe what you did.

For each answer, you will need to tell us clearly, using the STAR method shown below:

Situation: What was the situation or issue you were faced with? Task: What was the nature of the task and what did it involve? Actions: What did you do during the task and what difference did your actions

make? Result: What was the final outcome?

It is important that you keep your response concise and you should write no more than 200 words for each answer.

CompetenciesThis section provides you with an opportunity to tell us about how you have demonstrated the competencies

required for this programme.

You are advised to refer to the guidance notes before completing this section of the form.

Initiative – Provide an example of an activity you have organised or undertaken in your own time in order to further your own development.Example (max 200 words): e.g. In preparation for each academic year, I volunteer to be a Head Contact for new students, which involves leading a team of guides, organising two week’s worth of events and being the first point of contact for new students; as I aim to enhance my leadership and managerial skills. The programmes I have arranged have all been a success and I have been awarded a gold award for volunteering twice.

Tenacity – Provide an example of a time when you gained something because you persisted for a length of time and did not give up.Example (max 200 words): e.g. For my Operation’s Management module at University, there was an element of group work that I had to do. In my group, there were two international students who had difficulty in their grammar. I assisted them throughout the year by having sessions once a week where I helped them to check their work and gave them some grammar lessons. I found this to be a challenging task, but at the end of the module, we all attained an A+ for the module and I was invited for a free holiday to Taiwan.

Problem Solving and Analysis – Provide an example of a problem you have encountered, and describe how you went about analysing the problem and devising a solution. Example (max 200 words): e.g. In a flat that I rented, we had a leakage in the kitchen along with a blockage of the sink and bath tub in our bathroom for which the landlord did not attend to promptly. Through research done on reputable DIY websites, I was able to clear the blockages by dissembling the U-Bends and I purchased a new tap for the kitchen and secured the leakage. The landlord was impressed with the work I did and it resulted in a decrease in rent for that month.

Planning and Organising – Provide an example of a time when you were given a task or project to complete without any structure. How did you go about organising your work and setting your priorities?Example (max 200 words): e.g. As a part time job, I worked on a Student Advisory Board. I was set the task of analysing a product that was in the pipeline and getting feedback from students across all academic fields. I organised a focus group which was to be done at the same time as my academic work, and I invested in an iPad and started to use Outlook which enabled me to plan and prioritise my work accordingly. The analysis that I made for the project was beneficial to The Company and at the same time, I managed to get grades in my academic work.
