The Business Year2013
4 | Bosch today UK 2014 Bosch today UK 2014 | 5
Worldwide, the Bosch Group employed some 281,000
men and women in 2013. Compared with the previous
year, this was an increase of 8,500. The biggest
change in associate numbers took place in Asia Pacific,
where they rose by 7,800 to 73,000. In the Americas,
headcount rose by just under 1,000 to 34,000. In
Europe, headcount remained more or less stable at
174,000, while in Germany it fell slightly to 107,000.
In its growth strategy, the Bosch Group is guided
by the main megatrends. For example, the company
is continuing to expand its business internationally,
especially in Asia. Africa will also gain in importance.
In all business sectors, the growing need to conserve
resources, protect the environment, and increase
energy efficiency is highly important – both in terms
of the Bosch Group’s products and services as well
as within the company itself. One further trend is
increasing urbanization, which holds many challenges
for mobility, security, and environmental protection.
The increasing connectivity of things and services over
the internet is also leading to fundamental changes in
society.

On the basis of these trends, and guided by its strategic
imperative “Invented for life,” the Bosch Group aims
to provide beneficial technology whose functions and
design also spark enthusiasm among customers. To be
able to finance these objectives, the company’s long-
term target is annual sales growth of 8 percent. The
corresponding EBIT margin is also 8 percent.
Bosch has a very high level of innovative strength. In
2013, a total of roughly 4.5 billion euros was invested in
research and development. The Bosch Group hired an
additional 2,030 researchers and engineers. In total, the
company employed 42,701 researchers and engineers
worldwide.
In 2013, the Bosch Group was able to improve its sales
and result, despite a weak economic environment. This
accomplishment was due partly to innovative products
in all business sectors, and partly to a rigorous focus on
optimizing costs. The Automotive Technology business
sector was particularly successful, while Industrial
Technology was severely impacted by the difficult
environment in the mechanical engineering industry.
In addition, important strategic groundwork was laid.
This included developing the new Energy and Building
Technology business sector, realigning the battery
businesses for electric cars, and increasingly taking
advantage of the potential for connecting products and
services over the internet. Bosch also withdrew from the
crystalline photovoltaics business.
The change in the way the Bosch Group’s fifty-fifty joint
ventures are consolidated also had a substantial impact
on the way figures are presented. They are no longer
included on a pro-rata basis in the consolidated financial
statements using the proportionate consolidation
method, but instead are recognized using the equity
method, i.e. their pro-rata share of equity is reported on
the balance sheet and their after-tax income is reported
in operating profit. The 2012 data have been adjusted
accordingly.
Despite a market environment that remained difficult,
Bosch was able to increase its sales in Europe by 2
percent, to 25.5 billion euros. In Asia Pacific, sales rose
to 11.1 billion euros – an increase of 5 percent. Following
a steep decrease in the previous year, the company
significantly slowed its negative development in South
America. In fiscal 2013, sales fell by just 3 percent. In
North America, sales grew by 3 percent to 7.8 billion
euros.

We live in an increasingly
connected world, where
we can control our
central heating with our
smartphones and where
our electric cars are clever
enough to reserve the next

world of connected devices
is set to transform our daily
lives.
All the objects around us –
everything from milk cartons
to jumbo jets – can be fitted
with sensors and Wi-Fi devices just millimetres in size.
The number of connected devices is rapidly growing and
the trend towards networking is unabated; it’s estimated
that by the end of 2015, more than six billion things will
be connected to the internet.
Bosch is ideally positioned to contribute giant leaps
forward in this connected world. As the world’s leading
sensor manufacturer in terms of sales, the web-enabled
Micro-Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) sensors
supplied by Bosch are a key technical component for
connectivity in the future. At present, every second
mobile phone in the world is fitted with a Bosch sensor,
which forms the basis of automated driving in the future.
Our sensors are present in more than just telephones
and cars though. In the UK, a complex collection of

With its Automotive Technology business sector, the
Bosch Group is one of the world’s largest automotive
suppliers. In 2013, this business sector accounted for 66
percent of total sales. The Automotive Technology business
sector mainly operates in the following areas of business:
fuel-injection systems for internal combustion engines,
peripheral devices for powertrain control, alternative
drive concepts, active and passive vehicle safety systems,
driver-assistance and other guidance functions, in-car
information and communication systems, and a range of
after-sales, engineering-support, and service concepts for

Accelerating into the future
Bosch research has shown that 60 percent of UK motorists
enjoy driving but found certain situations behind the
wheel stressful. Of those surveyed, almost a quarter found
slow moving traffic frustrating, while 30 percent said that
parking got them agitated. Technologies such as Park
Pilot, which helps drivers to park in a tight spot, take away
a lot of the stress of driving and make being on the road
much more enjoyable. Fully automated vehicles are fast
becoming a reality and the demand for automated vehicles
and driver assistance systems is only set to increase.
Despite the fact that the mainstream production of
automated vehicles may be many years away, the basics
of the technology are already in place in many modern
cars. Bosch supplies many of the technologies that form
the foundation of an automated sensor car, including
Automatic Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control
and Lane Departure Warning. Automatic Emergency
Braking systems are now included in the Euro NCAP
vehicle safety ratings, and in the future, these systems
will work together to create a fully automated vehicle.
Bosch also offers all the sensors required to detect
the full range of traffic conditions relevant for drivers
and their vehicles. Depending on the extent of onboard
functions offered by a particular vehicle, front detection
is carried out either by a radar sensor combined with a
mono camera, or by a stereo video camera. This level of
connected mobility opens up a new world of possibilities
for safer driving. One of these is the Bosch eCall Service.
In the event of an accident, the eCall Service is activated
by the same sensors that also trigger deployment of the
airbag. The vehicle uses eCall to transmit data relating to
the accident to the Bosch monitoring centers.
Moving forward
Automated driving has an exciting future, with
developments occurring one step at a time. At first,
a greater degree of automation at faster speeds will be
possible on highways until a ‘highway pilot’ will be able
to take over the entire trip. It is expected that by 2020,
the necessary developments will have been made to make
partly automated driving a reality.
By 2025, further advancements in driver assistance
systems will mean highly automated driving can be
achieved. Here, a much lower level of driver supervision
will be required. In the years following this development,
it is expected that fully autonomous driving will be
achieved – drivers will become passengers and the
vehicle will drive on autopilot.
Cutting the cost
Rising fuel costs mean driving is becoming an expensive
necessity. Aside from developing technologies to make
driving easier and safer, Bosch is committed to making
driving more efficient for owners of modern cars.
Bosch is already helping to make new cars more
efficient with technologies such as Start/Stop systems,
which help to reduce vehicle emissions and increase
fuel efficiency without sacrificing overall performance.
Continued advancements in powertrain technologies are
also providing scope for greater efficiency; fuel injection
systems will become more efficient, engines will be
downsized and turbo charging will help to make the
average vehicle more economical.
ETAS Ltd
Another part of Bosch related to the Original Equipment
division is ETAS Ltd. Part of the ETAS group, which is a
As the world’s number one independent manufacturer of automotive parts and systems, Bosch’s products and technology are found on virtually every car produced throughout the world. Bosch has brought about many significant automotive innovations since the start of the age of the motor car and now develops technology that enhances environmental protection, including turbocharged downsized engines. With a continued focus on developing economical solutions for vehicles across the world, Bosch technology can reduce the fuel consumption of diesel and gasoline cars by 30 percent. Bosch’s commitment to safety has led to the development of industry leading safety systems such as Anti Lock Braking System (ABS), the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) and Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB). Bosch also develops smart solutions for the integration of entertainment, navigation and telematics to make the driving experience as enjoyable as possible.
wholly owned subsidiary of Robert Bosch GmbH, ETAS
provides tools and solutions for development and service
of Electronic Control Units (ECUs). The UK-based division
has a sales office in Derby and a development site in York.
ETAS York is at the forefront of the development of ECU’s,
real-time operating systems and embedded software
development products. An operating system allows
different software tasks to share a single computer; for
embedded applications real-time performance is critical
to ensure that the most important tasks, as decided by an
ECU, are completed within a specific timeframe.
The high production volumes of automotive software
mean that if a system has even a 1% chance of failing,
then it will fail. As a result, there is an expectation on
suppliers, such as ETAS, that all systems will operate
on a ‘zero defects’ basis. ETAS is unrivalled in its
reputation with one billion ECUs on the road with zero
postproduction defects.

Drive and Control TechnologyIndustrial Technology
Driven by Bosch Rexroth
Rexroth was founded in 1795 in Germany, with the first
UK Bosch Rexroth subsidiary opening its doors in 1963,
before becoming part of the Bosch Group in 2001.
Various acquisitions prior to becoming part of the
Bosch Group allowed Rexroth to expand its expertise,
knowledge, and service offering to become one of
the world’s leading specialists in drive and control
technology.
Since becoming part of the Bosch Group, the division
has continued to grow. To demonstrate this growth, 2013
saw the official opening of its new power unit facility in
Wakefield. Rexroth technology is used all over the world
and here in the UK, the most famous examples include
Tower Bridge London and the London Eye, which is driven
by Rexroth hydraulics.
Landmarks
An iconic symbol of London, and probably the most
famous bascule bridge in the world, over 40,000 people
cross Tower Bridge every day, either on foot, bike or by
car. Rexroth drive and control technology ensures that the
heavy vibrations from traffic are distributed evenly across
the bridge.
Bosch Rexroth can also lay claim to powering the London
Eye, the UK’s most popular paid tourist attraction and
Europe’s tallest Ferris wheel. With the power of Rexroth’s
complete drive and control system, the London Eye
rotates at a constant speed of 26cm per second, which is
delivered by 16 hydraulic wheels.
The JCB Academy in Staffordshire also benefits from
Bosch Rexroth’s knowledge. Providing education to
14 to 19 year-olds, the JCB Academy’s core focus is
engineering. Rexroth works with students aged 16 and
17 who are working towards an Engineering Diploma
alongside their A-Levels. The students receive training
from Rexroth to understand how hydraulic systems
work and how they are maintained as part of a project
designed to encourage them to consider ways to extend
the life of the London Eye.
Drive and control technology from Bosch Rexroth moves machines and systems of any size. The company bundles global application experience in the market segments of mobile applications, machinery applications and engineering, factory automation, and renewable energies to develop innovative components as well as tailored system solutions and services. Rexroth offers its customers hydraulics, electric drives and controls, pneumatics, gear technology, and linear motion and assembly technology all from one source. In the UK, Rexroth uses the latest manufacturing techniques and quality-control procedures.

Security SystemsEnergy and Building Technology
High-definition security
With surveillance, a clear and accurate recording of
activities is the difference between usable and non-usable
footage. High Definition (HD) security cameras from Bosch
Security Systems provide image resolution that is sharp
and of the highest clarity.
HD security cameras are primarily used in instances that
demand the highest of security, such as in the financial
sector or for road traffic control. In this capacity, the
operators need to be able to pick out the smallest details
from the recording to maintain security levels, and high-
quality Bosch HD Security Camera recordings can capture
extensive information throughout the entire recording.
The Small Feature Recognition System works to
distinguish individual faces, or small items such as number
plates with ease. Users can zoom in on live or recorded
footage to examine the scene without compromising the
quality of image; it remains crisp, sharp and clear.
Light sensitive
Traditionally, cameras are unable to offer high-definition
images in poor light, but the Bosch Dinion Starlight HD
720p and Flexidome Starlight HD 720p RD are specifically
designed to deliver high-performance recording in extreme
low-light conditions, representing a breakthrough in light
sensitivity. Whereby previous versions would only have
been able to show black and white images, these HD
versions can show colour.
Both cameras feature the Bosch-developed Content Based
Imaging Technology (CBIT), which combines information
from various parts of the camera to dynamically optimize
the image captured. These cameras feature two modes:
Intelligent Auto Exposure (iAE), which ensures the optimal
image of important objects in the scene, and Intelligent
Dynamic Noise Reduction (iDNR), which provides the
most usable image possible by optimizing the bandwidth.
In the future, it is estimated that 720p HD cameras will
replace all Standard Definition (SD) versions. As such,
HD cameras are now considered the new standard for
professional video surveillance systems.
Bosch Security Systems is a leading worldwide supplier of internationally approved electronic and electrical security systems. The division provides its customers with innovative, high-quality solutions backed by world-class reliability and customer service. The range includes high-definition (HD) CCTV products, intrusion, social alarm, public address, conference systems and IP networks, Bosch Security Systems works closely with its partners and customers to support and maintain high-quality security installations. The superior performance of Bosch products minimizes downtime and reduces call-back costs.

Sustainabilityat Bosch
Acting sustainably is a company value that was already
very important for the company founder Robert Bosch.
Global challenges such as climate change, finite
resources, and global social standards underline how
important this focus on sustainability is. To monitor and
constantly improve on the success of this strategy, Bosch
has defined group-wide targets for more sustainability.
Above all, these performance indicators focus on the well-
being of the company’s workforce and the environmental
impact of its operations.
With respect to its workforce, the Bosch Group is
committed to providing a work environment that is
safe and encourages associates to give their best. For
example, the company has reduced the rate of job-related
accidents per million hours worked by 48 percent since
2007. The figure now stands at 3.6.
The Bosch Group wants its products to be sustainable
when it comes both to their use and their manufacture.
Since 2007, the company has reduced its annual energy
requirements by 8.3 percent. They currently stand at
6,218 gigawatt-hours. At the same time, Bosch has
reduced its annual absolute CO2 emissions by 2.0 percent
to 2.485 million metric tons. Over the same period,
relative CO2 emissions have been reduced by 16 percent.
Bosch’s target for 2020 is a 20 percent reduction from
2007 levels.
Furthermore, the company remains committed to the
principles of social entrepreneurship evinced by its
founder Robert Bosch. In 2013, Bosch donated 10.5
million euros for civic initiatives.

Robert Bosch Stiftung (Foundation) GmbH has been carrying on the charitable and social endeavors of the company’s founder in contemporary form since 1964. It pursues its specific objectives with programs and institutions of its own. It also supports external projects and initiatives if their objectives are congruent with its own.
Robert BoschFoundation
The Robert Bosch Foundation mainly focuses its activities
on healthcare, science, education, and international
relations. In these areas, the Foundation’s aim is to find
possible solutions for socially relevant issues, and to test
them in the field as models. The Foundation finances
its work from the dividend it receives as a shareholder
in Robert Bosch GmbH. Each year, the Robert Bosch
Foundation approves funding for some 800 projects.
Typical examples of the Foundation’s work include
international scholarship programs, exchange programs
for young executives, and research grants for journalists.
In addition, a film prize for German-Arab coproductions
has now been included in the Foundation’s program – just
one of many examples of new projects. The “Du hast die
Macht” (you have the power) internet platform has been
a successful part of the program for four years. It kindles
young people’s interest in political issues. The Robert
Bosch Foundation’s German School Prize has showcased
innovation for many years now. Last year, it was once
again presented by Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel.
For ten years, research grants have been awarded to
authors, and translators have received support for their
work of making literature accessible to other cultures.
The assistants program that encourages exchange
between China, eastern Europe, and Germany has now
existed for 20 years.

InnovationsThe innovative strength of the Bosch Group is a decisive
asset, and will remain so in the future. At Bosch, the main
drivers of innovation are resourceful and highly commit-
ted engineers, a high-performance yet efficient research
organization, and a historical background that is both an
inspiration and an obligation, driving the company on to
further outstanding achievements. Increasing connecti-
vity over the internet is leading to far-reaching changes,
making innovative products, services, and business
models possible. For this reason, all Bosch business
sectors are systematically promoting connectivity. In all
that Bosch does, every product it offers will be “Invented
for life.”
In the Automotive Technology business sector, the
combination of improved injection systems and
turbocharged downsized engines will reduce the
consumption of gasoline and diesel engines by a further
20 percent from their 2012 levels by 2020. A number of
innovations will also play a role here. One of them is the
BRS boost recuperation system. This entry-level hybrid
supports the combustion engine with additional torque.
It also offers a fuel-saving coasting function. This shuts
off the internal-combustion engine for up to 30 percent
of the driving time. In the area of battery technology,
a new development alliance has been agreed with GS
Yuasa International Ltd. and Mitsubishi Corporation.
Its aim is to develop the next generation of high-power
lithium-ion rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles.
To connect the machinery and plant made by different
manufacturers, Bosch Rexroth has developed a new
software concept. And connectivity is at the focus of
other activities, with smart home concepts becoming
increasingly popular among the public. In these
concepts, Bosch sensors feature in systems such
as those used to check that windows and doors are
secure. Boilers can also be connected with the rest
of the house, and controlled remotely by smartphone
or tablet, thanks to apps developed by Bosch. 18-volt
lithium-ion rechargeable batteries for power tools have
also been modified further. Thanks to “Smart Li-ion+”
control electronics, only the required amount of power is
actually used. The Indego robot lawnmower is one of the
appliances to feature such a system.

Corporate Social Responsibility in the UK
Engineers are the driving force at Bosch and they are
essential for our future development. As such, a key part
of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program
involves working with young people in the community to
inspire an interest in engineering and technology.
One of the ways Bosch in the UK is doing this is through
a series of Bosch ‘All Around You’ roadshows, which take
place at schools near to Bosch locations. For students
aged between 13 and 16 years old, the roadshows
demonstrate in a fun and engaging way that engineers are
problem solvers. Using Bosch products and innovations,
demonstrations are interactive, showing students how
Bosch innovations are ‘all around us’ and how important
engineering skills are for our future development.
Promoting engineering
In addition to this, associates at Bosch locations across
the UK work closely with young people to help them
experience engineering first-hand.
Rexroth, based in the UK in Glenrothes and St. Neots,
supports JCB Academy activities working with students
aged between 16 and 18 years old. By using practical
examples of Bosch Rexroth technologies, such as the
hydraulics in the London Eye, Bosch Rexroth works
closely with students at the Staffordshire-based Academy
helping them to understand how hydraulic systems work,
how they are maintained, and the factors that determine
maintenance plans.
Engineers at Bosch Lawn and Garden in Stowmarket act
as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)
ambassadors where industry professionals work with
schools and universities to offer students guidance with
projects. One such project encourages students aged
16 to 18 years old to design, build and test their own
product concepts and in another project, Mechanical
Engineering students from Imperial College, London,
receive advice on how to run development projects.
University teams taking part in the IMechE Formula
Student Challenge benefit from Bosch’s hardware,
software and technical know-how when challenged to
design, build and race in a single-seat racing car.
As an official Partner, Bosch also provides track support
to the teams on race day.
Green future
Engineering is also vital in the race to conserve global
energy resources and create a more sustainable future
for generations to come. Bosch in the UK is committed to
improving practices and processes within the company to
minimise environmental impact.
In 2007, Bosch in the UK pledged to reduce CO2
emissions by 20 percent across all sites by 2020. All of
the Bosch UK sites are well on their way to reaching this
target, but Worcester, Bosch Group and Bosch Rexroth
have not only reached their target but they’ve exceeded
it too.
At Worcester, Bosch Group, the ‘Zero to Landfill’
programme recycles 100 percent of all scrap appliances
and defective parts. By shredding and granulating plastic
waste it can be re-used in other products. This means
that no products are sent to landfill or for incineration,
which generates high levels of CO2 emissions.
At the Rexroth Glenrothes Site in Fife, Scotland, CO2
emissions have been reduced by 30 percent with the
introduction of a combined heat and power (CHP)
system.
