I youre among the in ux o newcomerscently retired or semi-retired to the area, eres a new organization created by theindsor-Essex Active Retirement Com-unity Initiative (WEARCI), worth look-g into. Te 100 Mile Peninsula Club islunteer run and osters an environment o iendship, social engagement, community lunteering and promotion o the regions
ne communities or ideal retirement living.WEARCI, ormed as a not- or-pro t in08 by the Regional Chamber o Com-erce, Greater Windsor Home Buildersd Windsor-Essex County Association o
EAL ORS, is mandated to support thegions economic growth and diversity by racting age 50-plus amilies to relocate to
anadas southern-most region.Marketing primarily targets the Greateroronto Area and on a smaller scale, Ottawa, ngston and western centres, Calgary, Ed-onton and Vancouver. E orts seem to beying o ! In January, WEARCI announced2 amilies age 50-plus relocated to Wind-r and Essex County and purchased $241illion in real estate, bene tting all commu-ties since the program began in mid-2009.
Moving here has put 10 years
back on my life, Newcomer, Stephanie Tompson.
Its a per ect retirement community orople wanting a more leisured li estyle,

Similarly, Maureen Lauzon, originally o lbury, moved back to the area rom a smallwn north o Kingston. Initially, she and hersband looked to Chatham but discovered
xes were much higher than Essex County.ss than a year ago, the Lauzons settled in
akeshore at Coopers Mill.
Lauzon and Wharram had a resource thatnew retiree residents like Stephanie Tompsondidnt have a network o riends and relativesto help them integrate into the community.
Thompson, a Bob-lo Island resident, moved rom oronto a er being downsized.Te CARP member received a promo-tional e-mail that brought her to the area.Te timing was per ect and so was the li e-style. Moving here has put 10 years back on my li e, Tompson stated. I dont haveto worry about money here. Tompsonmanaged to localize hersel through theAmherstburg library and by joining a book club. She agreed that the 100 Mile PeninsulaClub would have made her transition mucheasier and is eager to get involved.
Ensuring visitors feel
welcomed and wanted back Te 100 Mile Club is a natural exten-
sion or our group to connect newcomerswith their communities and each other, commented Krista Del Gatto, WEARCIPresident and Executive Ofcer o theREAL ORs regional association. Withclose to a thousand new amilies in theregion, we have a tremendous opportunity to engage and involve them in the growth o this new green economy, she emphasized.
Prospective new retiree residents may visita region up to six times be ore setting downnew roots. Others like Dennis and LouiseKeller rom Surrey, BC, made justone triphere be ore moving to Leamington in 2008.

Its a pretty crowded marketplace out there for hearingcare, and Lisa Macari, Doctor of Audiology and CEO of TheHearing Wellness Centre wants to help clear up some ofthe confusion.
So many storefront shops are opening these days, saysLisa. I want to help consumers understand the differentoptions that are available to them. Lisa and her team at TheHearing Wellness Centre offer an exemplary level of hearingcare, because they have the schooling and qualicationsthat come along with being Audiologists.
Lisa earned her Masters of Audiology 14 years ago, andher Doctorate in 2006, and has been involved in bothprivate and public practice since. Her credentials areso well established that she was chosen by Phonak tobe the rst distributor in the area for the groundbreaking
Lyric hearing aids. We were thrilled to be the rstlocal distributor for the Lyric, says Lisa. It was areal demonstration of their trust in our credentials andour abilities.
At The Hearing Wellness Centre, Lisa and her team offercomprehensive hearing care. We know that amplicationis not treatment, she explains. We truly want whats bestfor each person, not just a sale. Well often refer patientsto their family physicians or to other specialists ratherthan just t them for a hearing aid. Thats not the cure-allfor everything its critical to do a full assessment and
determine the underlying cause of the hearing loss.
Lisa went on to outline the extensive investigation thatis needed to determine whats behind hearing loss. Shedescribed one patient who after Lisa reviewed all of his
history was shocked to nd that a course of chemotherapyhed recently completed was responsible for hishearing loss.
Fortunately, the chemo treatment was part of his cure, butit did result in almost complete hearing loss in one ear, whichsadly doesnt come back. And, she went on to explain thattting this patient with hearing aids soon after his chemoisnt always the proper solution. Patients can continue to
experience increasing hearing loss for up to a year aftertheir chemo.their progress has to be monitored and theirtreatment adapted to reect those changes.
This is just one example of what Lisa and her team like todescribe as their commitment to care. Heres a testimonialfrom the nephew of one of Lisas patients:
I would like to thank-you, Lisa on behalf of my uncle Ron.He went to see you about his tinnitus, and you suggested to him that he should have an MRI. The MRI showed a mass around his ear. Doctors were not sure what exactly the mass was at rst - speculating that it was an Arteriovenous malformation. He nally went for brain surgery two days ago and they found he had a mass of excess calcium around hisear. Surgery was reported as being successful and he is now at home recovering. Thank you, for being a good friend and taking the time and care for my Uncle Ron!! That small pieceof advice probably saved his life. Brad W.
We believe in compassion and a continuity of care for thewhole person. Its not an overstatement to say that theproper hearing aids are life-changing, says Lisa. Thatsexactly how some of our patients and their families havedescribed the difference in their lives. Lisa and her teaminvite you to Come Hear Again.

Meet the newcomers to WindsorEssex. Our southern-most regionshaped by 100 miles of shoreline has caught the attention of age50-plus families across Canada and around the world. Almost 1,000couples have made the move here since WEARCI began their initiative four years ago.* They love our friendly nature, relaxed, affordable lifestyle and the diverse amenities unique to each of our nine communities.
Since 2009, these afuent boomers have been a major boost to thelocal economy, purchasing real estate valued at $241 million, creatingnew jobs and spending over $32 million throughout the area.
Our newcomers give back too. Theyre tireless volunteers, eager to mentor and supportive of their new communities. As the mostpowerful consumer group in Canada, age 50-plus represents a wind- fall in both economic and social gains for their community of choice.
If you havent met a newcomer in your town, chances are, you will. The WindsorEssex100 Mile Peninsula continues to gain nationalrecognition as the ideal destination for active retirement living. A good news story worth talking about.

Che GagnonContinued from page 3
Tis contrasts with Gagnons experiences inCanada, where hes observed an abundance o phenomenal regional ingredients and very tal-ented che s with skill sets that are o en higherthan their overseas counterparts due in part tothe privilege o attending culinary schools. Botho er di erent opportunities in terms o growth
and development, Gagnon maintains, But theinspiration at the end o the day is the same: itsall about ood, and the beauty o ood is that itscontroversial ood nurtures the soul, challengesthe system and your senses.
Gagnon has won over 18 gold medals in oodcompetitions in oronto, Chicago, Germany,Singapore, and Hong Kong. He has also coachedteams in Hong Kong to compete in Singapore. Hemuses, Competition is a natural by-product o my work. Working in a kitchen youre competitivewith your peers, ood competitions are a plat ormto exhibit and represent what you do within yourown kitchen, to market the company you work
or, and to expose your sta to new presentations
by other che s.When asked what inspired him to dedicate hispro essional li e to the culinary arts, Gagnon citesbeing raised in a culinary-minded environment.I was always intrigued by ood. Growing up, my
ather was a butcher, so I guess its in the blood.More importantly, working as a che refects Ga-gnons personality, which he admits is high-ener-gy and highly motivated. For me to work in anenvironment where I would be doing the samething each and every day would have destroyedme internally.
Gagnon has a rm philosophy when consid-ering what makes a success ul che , maintainingthat a strict ocus on cooking alone will lead to theburning out o ones career. I you stay ocusedon entities that are unrelated to cooking music, theatre, art, recreation although these are totally
unrelated to what you do they heavily contrito your creative ability in the kitchen.
Gagnon owes his own success in the kitchhis amily, which is very important to him. Tealso the reason he returned to Windsor. I wed to provide my three boys with a great ssystem, ree education, sa ety, the opportunnetwork and develop riendships they carryhigh school. Also crucial to Gagnon was thachildren have the opportunity to spend time wtheir extended amily, which adds to the balhe believes is essential to living a good li e.
Gagnon has very particular thoughts on p viding a healthy diet and good cuisine or thset, as well as the challenges o working intirement community setting, in which he wiproviding meals to the same audience on a dbasis. Its de nitely important that I have a keen perspective o break ast, lunch, and din terms o the oods that are consumed, thingredients are diversi ed and not repetitive, that the three meals are well-balanced in termcarbohydrates and proteins. He plans on aching this diversi cation by preparing 5-star m
rom scratch, using ingredients integrated di erent cuisines and cultures, including TJapanese, Indian, and Malaysian. He claims
hell never cook the same dish twice. In Executive Director Zucchettos past eriences working in retirement care settings
ound that the residents chie complaints arelated to ood quality and the diversi catio
oods on the menu. Tis is another reason tGagnon is an ideal che or the SCBRC. Lustickler or detail, enthuses Zucchetto. Hediversi ed in talent, his presentation is greatthe diversity is there!
Gagnon is quick to praise Windsors culiclimate. Windsor has a lot o great che s, great college in St. Clair College, with very taed teachers. Despite this he believes that ECounty represents somewhat o an under utiresource in terms o ingredients, local armetheir o erings, and wineries. I see a phenomadvantage as a che working within Essex Cin this region.
Gagnon says its very important or aspche s to nd a work environment that is wellanced and high-quality, because their rst kitcwill be their oundation. He also stresses thmadic nature o his vocation, advising, Itsimportant as a che that you continuously chenvironments, because its an evolution. Its cruthat when you decide to leave a kitchen you dleave simply to nd another job, but that youci cally identi y the kitchen in a restaurant bon your weaknesses. Seeing ones career in o sel -evolution and development is impoGagnon says, because che ng is a li estyle, complacent entity. He believes that working di erent che s and in various environmenbecome ingredients in ones personal recipeculinary success.
Executive Director Zucchetto emphasizesChe Gagnon is a per ect t or the SCBRClosophies and mandate o providing top-nresident service. Luke has overseen and mtored hundreds o che s. Hes catered to a
erent kinds o tastes and cuisines, and cusservice is his ocus. We have the same goal.

case, a janitor o ered so walk me in and out o he school. He notes the main di erence be-ween metro Detroit and the suburbs isnt the
kids. Its that the schools in metro Detroit are oldand not maintained whereas the schools in thesuburbs are state-o -the-art, shares Phil.
As a Sunday morning un olds Phil looks re-axed and energized as he enjoys a hot chocolaten a local ca and talks about his ortunate cir-
cumstances. I am lucky. We o en interview andhire retirees who desperately need income dueo their nancial situation, explains Phil.
For this retiree, refecting on his new job ismore about seeing how the pieces o his li e hehas most enjoyed have come together to providea re reshing, i not surprising, new lease on li e.

It was really amazing to nd mysel setting upthis outdoor stage or a Mad Science Detroit dem-onstration right in the middle downtown Detroiton Woodward Avenue at the Winter Blast estival. All these people were packed in to our tent to seeour stage show!
aking a step in a new direction has come withli e enriching rewards or Peck. Speaking as a new grandpa, Phil suggests others who are leery about
ailure or trying something new in retirementremember how children learn to walk by allingdown and not giving up. What has his experiencetaught him? Risk! he exclaims. Say yes and seewhat happens.
Be prepared to say your lines but you may needto improvise along the way.
Nancy Yamashita is surrounded by co-workersand riends or dinner and conversation at the
wisted Apron. Yamashita looks younger than herage. She will turn sixty next year and has worked
or Service Canada or 35 years processing Em-ployment Insurance claims in Windsor.
wo o the our women gathered have o cially retired. Nancy and another colleague arent quitethere yet. Te ollowing morning Yamashita willhead o to oronto to Retirement School (atwo day seminar) in oronto organized by heremployer designed to equip her with everythingshe needs to know and do to retire e ectively. Hereighty year old riend recalls having three pursesin tow during the year a er she retired, each witha separate balance sheet so she could track her ex-penses and make sure she did in act have enoughto live on. Te senior retiree tells Yamashita, thatshe thought she would teach tennis and music butthat things didnt work out that way. In act, themost meaning ul parts o her days, are spent doing
rom crossword puzzles to learning languages to
exercise her mind and hope ully prevent demen-tia, taking long drives and walks outdoors andtravelling to see riends.
Nancy returns rom her trip a ew days laterand reports back over break ast. Te seminar wasconducted by a Financial Planner and each per-son was given a planning binder complete with aPersonal section where participants could writeabout their goals or retirement. Nancy pointsout that the instructor advised the seminar par-ticipants to ll this section out on their own and
ocused more on how to reduce costs, handle in-come taxes and balance investment port olios. She says the Financial Planner told the group o 40 they had a very good pension plan o seventy
percent o their income, a ar better than privatesector employees receive.
Nancy explains that she elt the seminar wouldbe better suited to someone who is about ten yearsaway rom retiring so they could really plan their
nancial investments better. In her case, the utureis coming aster than she thought it would andwith it are three questions she must answer orhersel : Can I nancially a ord to retire? Whatwill I do with my li e? Where will I live? An on-line pension calculator provided by her employerand determining her debts and mortgage will helpher answer the rst question. It is the answers to
last two questions which are she eels will be the living a retirement li e o value to her.
amily and riends, enjoying tennis and the thand eating out are all aspects o her li e thpriority or Yamashita. With her closest relatimanageable drive down the highway to Lonright now the idea o staying in Windsor whercan have an active social li e and spend time
riends makes the most sense to her right now
easier then selling her home in Windsor, livwith amily in Hamilton and trying to arranga place to stay to see riends visit Windsor.
Windsor is where my social li e is, shedes. Yamashita has also given some thoug
how her social li e might change a er retiremShe is trying to ocus on viewing retiremenpositive time when she could increase doing mo what she enjoys most like tennis, yoga and slive theatre but she might need to cut back whcomes to dinners out at pricey restaurants.
I could having riends come over or meet or a co ee at im Hortons, she says. have to cut back a little.
Having seen the aces o her co-worke
come more relaxed a er they went throughinitial adjustment to retiring gives Nancy hthat li e a er retirement will be good or herright away, then eventually.
It is the unknown actors that could crowhich have Yamashita a little worried.
What would happen i my health chanWill I really get to see her riends as o en awishes? What will I do with the time in betwsocializing and doing hobbies?
For Yamashita, there is still time to talk her decisions with riends and amily and tosider the idea o living her own way througanswers just like so many other retirees she knwho are making an entrance into a new serietransitions.
Soon to be retirees, newly minted retireesthose who are late into the post-retirement ywill all grapple with uncertainty. Perhaps, might nd some perspective by consideringwords o William Shakespeare who once reto all men and women playing their parts onstage o the world and spoke to their never encon rontation with change when he wrote, have their exits and their entrances.
Better still, he reminded us that each pe(with or without a great pension or master pwill nonetheless play many parts during our li
