Secondary Schools 6-12 Grades• Research based evidence on 6-12 grade configuration
• Several winners of Great Schools’ College Success Award credit their combined 6th -12th grade models as part of their success. https://www.greatschools.org/gk/csa-winners/
“When middle and high schools work together, it can have a big impact on student success, including higher graduation rates and higher GPAs.”
GreatSchools.org April, 2019
1. Students become familiar with a school’s culture and expectations earlier.
2. Students have the opportunity to build longer lasting relationships with teachers.
3. Staff can identify and intervene with students earlier.
Reducing Transitions for Students• A study of 232 Michigan schools revealed that a reduction of
school-to-school transitions and longer grade spans within schools is positively correlated with improvements in student achievement.
• Some studies have found that schools with more grade levels per building evidenced not only higher academic achievement, but also better attendance rates, self-esteem and attitudes towards school.
• HS students can be tutors and role models for MS students.
• Administrators of 6-12 schools say the structure offers special opportunities for learning.
• Teachers collaborate across grades and students receive a strong and consistent network of support.
• More coherent course scheduling for students.
• Fosters a sense of community in schools.
Benefits of 6-12 Integration
Considerations of 6-12 Uniqueness• Continue to meet the needs of two distinct student groups.
• Boundaries must be observed• Separate events and dances
• Separate physical space in the school building

Potential Economic Impact• Critical upgrades may get more expensive if not corrected now
• Current lower interests rates could provide District with ability to pay a smaller interest amount
• Value of a community often rests on the quality & marketability of its schools
• A bond program can provide opportunities for local contractors and businesses
• District’s current debt levy of 1.68 mills (2.08 with Sinking Fund) is projected to progressively diminish, giving the District the opportunity to fund these projects with less impact to the millage rate
Moving Forward• Needs do not go away
• ECSD Declining Enrollment
• Aging Buildings / Infrastructure Needs /Outdated Technology
• Building Utilization will continue to be assessed. Future building closures may occur.
