•Built between 1790-1850•Steeply pitched roof•Symetrical four opening façade wall•Exterior is wood or stucco•Usually set close to the property line

TYPES OF BUILDINGS:SHOTGUN HOUSE•Built 1850-1910•Narrow rectangular domestic residence•Usually no more than 12 feet wide with doors at each end•New Orleans dominant house type•Typically one story•Raised on brick piers

•Term entresol refers to a short mezzanine level located between the ground and third stories•Animals on the first floor, servants and grain on the second floor and residental living quarters on the top floor (sometimes the second floor, sometimes the third floor)•Known for putting separate functions on separate levels of a building

TOWNHOUSE•Narrow, three story structures•Made of stucco or brick•Asymetrical arrangement of the façade with a balcony on the second floor•Sits close to the property line

URSULINE CONVENT

•Oldest building in the Mississippi Valley•Only building of the original colony still standing•Ursuline nuns conducted school for children of the wealthy

•This is where Emily in Cane River went to school

•Built in 1752

THE CABILDO•Destroyed in the great New Orleans fire in 1788•Rebuilt between 1795-1799•Home of the Spanish Municipal government in New Orleans•Took its name from the government body that worked there•Cabildo means “City Council”

ST LOUIS CATHEDRAL•Oldest church in Louisiana•Complete in 1777•Destroyed in the great New Orleans of fire 1788•Rebuilt in 1794
