- Boise Music Week 2017 -Music - An Adventure for Life

Ninety-nine (99) years and counting! What a wonderful tradition of music to have in our community. Boise Music Week has been providing a marvelous week of music of all kinds for such a long time that we often forget who and what makes it possible. YOU! All the time, talent, and enjoyment would go unappreciated if generous people did not continue to support Music Week with their donations. Beginning with International Dance Night and ending with the production of this year’s musical Mary Poppins, our community, especially our youth, are showcased. We will have music and fun for everyone – School Night, Music in the Park, Church Night, All That’s Jazz, Organ Concerts, and Showcase. Rehearsals have been going strong since February and volunteers will be spending many, many hours preparing for the events. All of you help make this week possible and all for free of charge. No admission charges will be required at any of the events. Boise is a great city, made better by its strong support of the arts. We are indeed fortunate. In addition, we are already starting the planning process for next year - our 100th Celebration of Music Week! Wow, that is going to be exciting. In the meantime, enjoy Music Week 2017 by attending the events.

Roger Lingle, President, Boise Music Week

forever grateful ...Harry W.Morrison, co-founder of the Morrison Knudsen Construction Company, and his wife,Velma V. Morrison shared a love of music and Broadway theatre, and dreamed of building a performing arts center in their beloved Boise. The dream finally became reality in 1984, long after Harry’s passing in 1971. Velma, who had long been a Boise Music Week supporter, offered the use of the Morrison Center, for the highlight event, the Broadway Musical production, beginning in 1988. Since then thousands have had the thrill of performing on that stage and thousands more have enjoyed the productions. Everyone is invited, regardless of their ability to pay, to experience the grandeur of the Velma V. Morrison Center for the Performing Arts, during Boise Music Week. Velma passed way in 2013. Boise Music Week remains forever grateful to Harry and Velma Morrison for their passion, foresight, determination and generosity, and now appreciates the wonderful opportunity to continue working with the Morrison Center Endowment Foundation to perpetuate their legacy in this community.

Synopsis

Bert, the chimney sweep and jack-of-all-trades, introduces us to 1910 England and the Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins shows up at their door. The family finds that she’s the answer to their prayers, but in the most peculiar way. Using magic and common sense she teaches the Banks’ how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical, memorable adventures but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Even grownups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “Anything Can Happen if You Let it!”

Christian Grey - Bert

After playing Bum #1 in Little Shop of Horrors, Borland in The Future Soon, Brad in The Rocky Horror Show, and Big S in Seven Santas, it has become clear that Christian can only be cast in roles whose names start with “B”. In an attempt to try something different, Christian recently auditioned for the role of Mary Poppins. The director unfortunately did not take to his idea of “Marty Poppins” as a new

interpretation of this classic. Alas, Christian is overjoyed to be starring in his newest “B” role and sharing the stage with so many talented people. He would like to thank his wife Katherine for her continued patience and support. “

Julie Thimmig – Winifred Banks

Julie is thrilled to make her Boise Music Week premiere! A Wisconsin native and now Meridian resident, Julie and her husband Andy (and cat Chickpea) moved to the area two years ago to pursue her dream job: high school theatre teacher. She teaches theatre and directs performances at Middleton High School and loves it. Julie has taught and performed all over the world and is glad to be involved in this beautiful story.

Sarah Howard - Mary Poppins

Boise nat ive Sarah Howard holds degrees in Musical Theatre Performance and English, and has performed professionally and academically in Idaho, Wyoming, and Virginia. She is working toward a career as a children’s author. Past favorite shows include Hamlet (Ophelia), Les Miserables (Cosette), Cinderella (Fairy Godmother), and The Music Man (Marian).

For the second year in a row we will present our performance on Tuesday night at 7:00 PM in the Taco Bell Arena.

Rich Lapp - Chairman

Rich has taught vocal music for 31 years in Boise; at Fairmont JHS, Boise HS and Timberline HS. He is currently enjoying his second year serving the Boise School District as Supervisor of Music and Art. Rich has been involved in Barbershop quartet and chorus music for 34 years, has directed the Boise Chordsmen for over 20 years and has sung in many local quartets. Rich has been married to Leni for 34 years and their 4 children have had valuable educational experiences in academics, athletics and performing arts in the Boise School District.

Jim Perkins, ChairmanJim was the director of Bands at Borah High School for 30 years. He has served as President of Boise Music Week for three terms and has been involved with the organization for over 50 years. Jim has been the Chairman of Monday Showcase for many years and will be the Master of Ceremonies for both the Monday Showcase and the International Dance Night. Presently Jim is the conductor of the Capital City Mulligan Band. His band is comprised of musicians who have played in high school or college bands and still enjoy performing with a community band. He often spends his spare time on the golf course.

Treasure Valley Concert Band, Marcellus Brown, Conductor

This fine band is now beginning its 35th season. They are comprised of musicians from all walks of life who enjoy playing fine wind instrument literature. The group plays three regular concerts per year, repeating those concerts in various communities throughout the Treasure Valley. Conductor Marcellus Brown came to Boise State University in 1989 and has been directing this group for over 20 years. He is an outstanding conductor and has been recognized for his work and dedication not only at Boise State but is asked to conduct many music groups both here and abroad. Our program tonight is sure to please our audience…music you can recall from years past, classic band literature from Broadway show tunes and current film scores as well…all of which encourages you, the audience, to tap your feet and hum along with our band.

Showcase Concert - South Junior High School - Monday - May 8th - 7:00pm

The Boise Valley Chordsmen

The Chordmen are a 40-man chorus of performers who love to sing four-part a cappella selections in a variety of musical styles including Broadway, gospel, barbershop, doo-wop and jazz. The chorus performs frequently throughout the Treasure Valley, and donates much of its proceeds to charities such as the Salvation Army, the Boise Rescue Mission, and Saint Alphonsus Foundation. For over 10 years we have sponsored the Idaho Youth Barbershop Festival. This past year we hosted over 1,000 students in the Morrison Center under the direction of the “godfather of a cappella’ Deke Sharon. A few years ago the chorus made a commitment to constant improvement of its vocal technique, musicianship, and overall presentation value. We love to sing exceptionally well and genuinely entertain. We are a close brotherhood, and we love depending upon each other to make the music that moves our community.

In Memoriam Kathy Lee Boise Music Week will long fondly remember choreographer Kathy Lee, who generously a n d c h e e r f u l l y contributed her time and talent over the past 15 years. Kathy owned the Kathy Lee School of Dance in Boise for over 24 years and enjoyed teaching and sharing her love of dance with thousands of students of all ages. Kathy choreographed eleven BMW Musical Theatre Productions such as The Wizard of Oz, Crazy for You, Beauty and the Beast, Singin’ in the Rain and most recently South Pacific in 2013. Kathy passed away unexpectedly in October, 2016. Kathy’s dancing shoes will be hard to fill…

Linda Eustice BergIn October 2015 Boise Music Week and our community lost a beloved friend, Linda Eustice Berg, who made such a huge difference in the lives of so many children and adults. For 30 years she worked with elementary school children in the valley and taught them to love music. She was the founder of Opera Idaho Children’s Chorus and was honored as Idaho Teacher of the Year in 2010. Not only did she teach and direct but she unselfishly volunteered her time to Boise Music Week as vocal director for many of our Broadway product ions. She loved musical theatre and demonstrated to everyone involved how sharing the gift of music brings joy to themselves and others.

Beth HoganAn outfit like Boise Music Week – run by volunteers – doesn’t last for 100 years because it attracts folks who don’t care to deal with problems, who don’t love music, and who don’t stick around. Rather, it attracts people like Beth Hogan. She certainly had a passion and talent for music, but she also had an appetite for the hard work required for building success. Beth joined Music Week in 1965 and never stopped sticking around. She never stopped being busy either. She was the board secretary decade after decade. She was an eager participant, had an agile mind, and jumped in whole-heartedly when someone said, “We have a situation.” Or, “We have a problem.” Or, “Crisis!” For all that, she had fix-it skills. Plus, she was a lovely person, loyal, kind, told great jokes, drove big cars, and was fun to be around.

Sean Rogers - Chairman

Sean has won praise and acclaim nationally and internationally for his artistic mastery at the keyboard as both a solo performer and a collaborator. He has had four arrangements published through SONOLOGY Music. He tours nationally in his own shows and productions showcasing music from the “Great American SongBook” and improvising music for silent movies on both piano and organ. Sean was just awarded the Mayor ‘s “Excellence in the Performing Arts for 2016” award for the city of Nampa, Idaho.
