First, let me say Happy New Year and thank you for attending this performance of Disney’s Mary Poppins. The 8 performance schedule is a sell–out and we are naturally excited that over 19,000 loyal theatre goers will see this amazing production. This is going to be a very special year for all of us who enjoy and care about the Orpheum Theatre. We have two huge events happening that aren’t part of our regular “to-do” list: the celebration of 85th Anniversary of the Theatre, which originally opened its doors in November of 1928, and the construction of the Orpheum Centre for the Performing Arts & Leadership this May. This year will be all about celebrating our past as a historical and cultural landmark as we build towards an even brighter future. The Centre is being built to accommodate the growing number of students between pre-school and college that participate in our current 19 programs. Last year the number reached a new high of 66,000, and we expect that number will begin to climb to 100,000 when the new Centre opens in summer of 2014. The new programming will include a leadership curriculum that will help the next generation of parents, citizens and leaders develop the skills, confidence and pride in their community. Our programs will be geared toward building a better work force and, hopefully, keeping our kids in Memphis instead of leaving for other cities with a promise of more opportunity. The Centre will cost close to $12 million, and with all of the positive projects happening in Memphis the fundraising is competitive and challenging. But I am constantly reminded that in my almost 33 years, the people in our community have always responded and supported the needs of this historical venue.

Last but not least is our next Broadway Series which will be announced in March. I hope everyone will be as excited as we are about continuing our tradition of presenting the very best of Broadway. In addition to Broadway this year we will be expanding our concert schedule, bringing back the much-loved Classic Movie Series and adding special family shows. So again I say thank you – and get ready for the best year of fabulous entertainment and celebration yet!

Les Misérables is now the longest-running musi-cal in the world and, in October 2010, celebrated its 25th anniversary and made theatrical history – three different productions of the musical were staged simultaneously in one city – the star-stud-ded Concert at The O2, the acclaimed new 25th Anniversary Production at London’s Barbican The-atre, and the original production, which continues its record-breaking run at the Queen’s Theatre, London. The new 25th Anniversary Production has been a huge hit all over again, currently breaking box office records across North America, with an-other production in Korea and more to open world-wide in Canada, Australia, South America, Japan and China over the next three years.

On 1 and 2 October 2011 The Phantom of the Opera celebrated its 25th Anniversary with a spec-tacular staging at the Royal Albert Hall. A com-pletely new production of this legendary musical launched on a national tour in February 2012.

Over the next three years over 40 new productions of his musicals are due to open around the world.Cameron’s film version of Les Misérables, pro-duced in conjunction with Working Title Films and Universal and directed by Tom Hooper has brought this great musical to a whole new audience and is proving to be as big a success in the cinema as it has been on stage. It is also the winner of three Golden Globes including best picture.

Cameron owns seven historic theatres in Lon-don’s West End – the Prince of Wales, Gielgud, Queen’s, Wyndham’s, Noël Coward, Novello and Prince Edward, all of which have undergone spec-tacular refurbishment, giving him the opportunity to indulge his passion for architecture and the restora-tion of old buildings. Cameron is also the co-owner of Music Theatre International, the World’s largest owner of secondary rights of the greatest musicals.

PAUL GROOTHIUS (Sound Design) trained as stage manager at Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Between 1981 to 1984, he worked in a London recording studio; first as Tape-Operator, eventually becoming the studio’s resi-dent engineer. Between 1984 and 2003, he was a member of the Sound Department at the National Theatre where he designed over 120 productions. Since 2003 Paul designed the sound for many plays and musicals in the UK, Europe, Asia and the USA.

NATASHA KATZ (Lighting Design). Broadway credits include: The Little Mermaid, The Coast of Utopia/Salvage (Tony® Award 2007), A Chorus Line (adapted from original design) The 25th An-nual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Tarzan, Aida (Tony® Award 2000), Sweet Smell of Success, Twelfth Night, Beauty and the Beast, The Cape-man, Gypsy, Barrymore, and Pack of Lies. Other designs: Sister Act on the West End, Buried Child for The National Theatre in London, Cyrano for the The Metropolitan Opera, Tryst for the Royal Ballet in London, Carnival of the Animals for New York City Ballet, Swan Lake at the Edinburgh Festival, Don Quixote for American Ballet Theatre, con-cert acts for Shirley MacLaine, Ann-Margret and Tommy Tune. Ms. Katz has designed many Off-Broadway and American regional productions.

BERNIE ARDIA (Hair and Wig Design) has en-joyed a 30-year career, starting in television. Mr. Ardia has designed over 75 productions including Ragtime at The Kennedy Center, Kiss of the Spider Woman with Chita Rivera, Starlight Express at The Las Vegas Hilton, Cinderella with Eartha Kitt and Deborah Gibson and the recent Wizard of Oz. It has been a thrill working with so many talented per-formers throughout his career including, Toni Tennille, Anita Gillette, Mary Wilson, Mackenzie Phillips, Mel-ody Thomas Scott and even Judge Judy! Mr. Ardia is also the author of Barbra Streisand in New York City.

CHRISTINE ROWLAND (Associate Costume De-signer) has worked extensively in the UK both at the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, as well as on several musicals includ-ing Carousel and My Fair Lady. Mary Poppins is the 24th production she has worked on with Bob Crowley.

ROSALIND COOMBES (Associate Scenic De-signer). Mary Poppins – UK tour designer. As-sociate designer to Bob Crowley for London and Broadway along with Tarzan®, The Capeman and

MATT KINLEY (Associate Scenic Designer) worked as freelance costume and prop-maker for stage, film and video with Robert Allsopp Associates. A graduate of the Motley Theatre design course, he enjoyed a long relationship with the National The-atre as designer, design associate and draught-sman on over 40 productions, including Jerry Springer: the Opera, The Coast of Utopia and My Fair Lady. Together with Cameron Mackintosh, Seth served as executive producer of a 40 week UK regional tour of the National Theatre’s My Fair Lady, which also ran in the United States. He is currently serving as Executive Producer on The 25th Anniversary Production of Les Misérables, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific. IN LOVING MEMORY: JO WOODOne of The Theatre’s most loyal and long time volunteers passed away on November 29, 2012.

Jo Wood was a phenomenal volunteer! At the age of 90, the number of hours Jo spent supporting the Memphis Arts Community was amazing. To name a few, she volunteered at Theatre Memphis, GPAC, Playhouse on the Square, WKNO and the Cannon Center; however, she always said that the Orpheum had her heart. Jo joined Friends of the Orpheum (FOTO) and began volunteering at The Orpheum over 30 years ago. She was always in the top five FOTO members who volunteered at the most events each year. Jo loved Broadway; the last event that she volunteered for was the Wednesday evening performance of BILLY ELLIOT on September 19. We will miss her presence serving as Floor Supervisor on the Mezzanine, assisting with New Volunteer Training, providing office support, working registration at the Annual Auction, the asparagus casserole and deviled eggs that she prepared for the Broadway Cast Parties, the many cards that she sent to all of us, and most of all, we will miss the love of “our Jo”! She was never one to miss the opportunity for a hug.

Pat Halloran, President of the Orpheum Theatre, said this “Jo Wood was the epitome of someone who loved The Orpheum and served with distinction. The Orpheum has always relied on volunteers and the generous support of those that love and appreciate this important place.”
