Term 3 Week 9 13th September 2017

Principal Congratulations to the Year 3 Rosellas who received the Principal’s Award for Excellence in Learning, during this week’s assembly their fabulous work with public speaking. Their teacher was very impressed that every student in the class could structure their speech correctly when writing it and use the appropriate language. Congratulations to our fabulous public speakers who will be representing us at The Port Jackson finals in the Greater Sydney Public Speaking Competition. Stage 2 - Oren Lazarus Stage 3 - Eliza Bellas Our early Stage 1 and Stage 2 representatives will be announced in next week’s newsletter. The Possums and Numbats had a great time in maths groups last Friday. They had their differentiated group work and then came together on the handball courts to make a human graph! Then went back to class and analysed it. Peer Support This week we further develop the range of strategies we can use in challenging situations. This session focuses on step 3 of the model, Proceed. In order to learn from situations and move forward children need to go beyond thinking of strategies and action them. Children recognise despite the use of a range of strategies, sometimes they cannot change the situation. In these times, it is important to accept the situation and move forward with a positive outlook. Encourage your child to follow through with strategies they have discussed and planned to use. It is important to then help them evaluate if this has worked or if they need to try a different strategy.

On Thursday September 14th, 2017, stop what you’re doing for one hour and pick up a book. We want Australians to either rediscover or introduce themselves to the benefits of reading. In children, it has been shown to help with identity formation, setting them up for success in the future. In adults, it has been shown to reduce stress by 68% more than listening to music, going for a walk, or having a cup of tea. We will all be celebrating Reading Hour in class tomorrow (with younger children a bit less!). I encourage all families to make the time to celebrate Reading Hour together as a family tomorrow and show the children how much you value reading.

Preschool were very excited to see the fairies had left them a new friend in the fairy garden, a very cute little rabbit! They are really enjoying the revamped space and today it had a distinctly Latin feel as the pre-schoolers shook their maracas and boogied to the music!

School Uniform- Our school uniform policy is on our APP and website. Please make sure your children are in school uniform if it is not a special event day where alternative arrangements have been made.

Kindergarten had a great time at the zoo and displayed exemplary behaviour all day! Thank you to the teachers for their work and organisation and a special thankyou to all the parent volunteers who were such a big help. Yesterday we had our schools external validation. I would like to thank all the many parents and students who helped with this process, your contributions were greatly appreciated and helped reflect our whole school community clearly. The staff have been working extremely hard putting together our submission and I would like to thank each and every staff member for their hard work and dedication. As well as time we created during the school week the staff contributed many hours of their own time over the term. As a part of this process we looked at the school in terms of Learning Teaching and Leading. We broke this down to 8 areas based on our whole school plan that we wanted to review: 1 Assessment, Reporting and the Learning Cycle 2 Play Based Learning 3 STEM and It’s Foundations 4 Creative and Performing Arts 5 Transition 6 Personal Development Health Physical Education (including sport) 7 Learning and Support 8 Leadership As well as helping us reflect on our successes this helped us reflect on where we wanted to improve or change things and led to some fabulous discussions on how we could implement the changes we identified, which has put us in a great place to commence work on our 2018-2020 school plan. I was pleased with the acnowledgment of our extremely sucessful collaborative pratices and the innovation shown in the teaching programs developed by our staff. It reflected their dedication and caring for the students and the ideas they are developing for future learning is truly exciting. They are constently evolving and reflecting on their practices and looking at how they can best support the children’s learning. I could not be more proud! Thank you to the fabulous Birchgrove staff you truly are the best team I have ever worked with!

On Monday during assembly Rebecca Fearon, from Ray White Balmain presented a cheque $3032 to the school, as a donation from the sales and purchases by BPS families. The money is going towards the purchase of some more iPads for the K-2 classrooms. There are APPs we want to use for STEMS, that the older ones don’t run! Thank you to all the parents who helped with the cake, BBQ and coffee stall at the election we are hoping to convince the P&C to put the funds from the Election Day activities towards the iPads as well! Please join us at the P&C Meeting Wednesday 20/9 if you would like to support the vote for this. Tracy Gray
