Principals Report

Year 4’s soccer game Look out for the two great art competitions happening. One to design a poster for Beyond the Frame and the other for the music night.

Tournament of Minds is one of the fastest growing international school programmes with the involvement of thousands of participants. TOM aims to enhance the potential of our youth by developing diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a competitive environment.

Peer Support- In this week’s Peer Support session the children will be looking at rights. How we as individuals may have rights and so do other people. Activities will although remind the children they may find themselves in difficult or awkward positions, they still need to remember to do the right thing. Discuss with your child a situation you were in that was potential difficult or awkward and explain the decision you made and why it was the right thing to do.

Thank you to all the parents who helped with our nit eradication drive over the weekend, I’ve had many messages of thanks from previously frustrated parents.

A very big thank you to all the parents donated soil and plants for preschools new planter boxes! All the preschool classes have put together a planter box and filled it with herbs, vegetables and flowers. Our worm farm has given us compost to add to our soil. The children are watering the plants every day. We even have a scarecrow to scare all the birds away who might eat our plants! THE BANKSIA CONCERT

On Tuesday, 27th August, Birchgrove Public School Senior Strings, Advanced Consort Recorders and Consort Recorders students took part in the Festival of Instrumental Music at the Sydney Opera House. The Festival of Instrumental Music is a series of four concerts that are organised annually by the Arts Unit at the NSW Department of Education and Communities to showcase the talents of children attending public schools across NSW. This year, our senior recorder and strings students performed three pieces each, one of these being the finale, the world premiere of Rocky Hammond – Private Investigator. Performing with them were students from other primary and secondary schools from around the state as well as the composer, Andrew Robertson on alto saxophone.

Many thanks to our hardworking conductors, Alicia Crossley and Aeree Kim, for preparing the children for the concert, Miss Gare for supervising the students at the Opera House, Mr Cormack for coming along to support them and all the parents and carers who helped with encouragement and logistical support.

MUSIC NIGHT Music Night is approaching fast. It is the biggest thing the Music Committee organises each year and a great showcase for our talented ensembles. All of the school music groups (Early Childhood Music, Recorders, Choirs, Strings and Bands) will be performing.

Date, Place and Time

Tuesday 10 September 2013

Birchgrove Public School Hall

Concert 5.30pm- 8.00pm (including a short interval) If your child is not able to attend, please let your parent contact know as soon as possible. This is a parent run function so all children must be supervised by a responsible adult throughout the course

of the evening. Your children remain your responsibility and should not be wandering around the school before, during or after the concert.

Performers are to wear music uniform, which is music t-shirt, black long pants and black shoes and socks. The music t-shirt is available from the uniform store on Thursday mornings. Early childhood music students can wear school uniform.

SEEKING BUDDING ARTISTS!! We are looking for illustrations from students for the Music Night program. If you are artistic, draw a music-themed picture in black and white on A4 paper. The winning picture will be on the front of the music program for music night. Get your entries into the school office by the end of this week (30 August 2013) for your

chance to have your art work displayed in the program.
