Pillar Crane Adrian Atkins

The pillar crane will make a great addition to our museum. The life of a project is like a sine wave. We were at the peak of the curve when CDOT gave us the crane in the old Middletown freight yard. As we dug down in the mud and water during its removal, we discovered that a huge base casting was broken into several pieces. I hit the bottom of the sine wave curve at this time. THUD!!! To repair this base was going to take a lot of technical expertise, time and plenty of patience. One day Philip Withington, a welding consultant from Scotland, CT. appeared at the museum and volunteered his services to put this puzzle together. He has been working on this for almost a year now in his spare time. For the old casting, you can only weld a little bit until the heat builds up and you have to stop. He estimates he has spent 300-400 hours on this project. Great volunteers of this kind are hard to find. The intact base casting has been returned to the museum in one piece. The next step is to obtain the large anchor bolts and construct the

foundation. Thanks to Philip, I am, now on top of the sine curve once again.

From this photo of the Central Vermont Center Cupola Caboose number 4052 much progress can be seen in its restoration. The wood siding is more than halfway along both sides. The step frame on this side is completed as is all of the steel work. Interior work is progressing but at a much slower pace. (Bob LaMay Photo)

Members work on getting new frame hooked onto the hinges to see how it hangs before adding the wood sections. (Bob LaMay Photo)

The photo to the right shows the new steel frame being moved into position by the crane truck being operated by Dick Arnold. The guidance is being provided by Mark Granville on the right and Rich Cizik in the center on the ground. If this steel frame with wood filler is successful all of the doors will be done in the same fashion. (Robert A. LaMay)

Jan C. McCollum (L) with his friend Penny poses with Jean Lambert. The sign being held is the special sign designed by Jan. It will be placed on the Chaplin Lineman’s Shanty very soon. (Bob LaMay Photo)

Shown here Adrian Atkins is dumping numerous loads of track ballast so our track crew can continue expanding our operating rail. (Bob LaMay Photo)

The museum’s crane truck is being used to lift steel frame into position so it can be hung. Hardware from the older door is being salvaged for the new door. (Robert A. LaMay Photo)
